Lesley Rene Stahl[1] (born December 16, 1941) is an American television journalist. She spent most of her career at CBS News, where she began as a producer in 1971.[2] She has been a reporter for CBS’s 60 Minutes since 1991.[3] She is known for her news and television investigations and award-winning foreign reporting. She has received various journalism awards for her body of work, including the 2003 Lifetime Achievement News and the Documentary Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Reporting. Before joining 60 Minutes, Stahl was the White House Correspondent for CBS News – the first woman to hold the job – during the presidencies of Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan and part of the tenure of George HW Bush. Her reports appeared frequently on the CBS Evening News, first with Walter Cronkite, then with Dan Rather, and other CBS News programs.[4] During much of that time, she also served as the anchor of Face the Nation, CBS News’ Sunday public affairs program that aired from September 1983 to May 1991. As a presenter, she has interviewed world leaders as diverse as Margaret Thatcher, Boris Yeltsin and Yasser Arafat. among other. She has also covered tensions in the Middle East and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In 2020, she garnered much media attention for her interview with President Donald Trump, in which he briefly paused the interview and left the house because he objected to her warning him of “difficult questions” that he inappropriate.”[7]

Stahl was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston, in 1941 to a Jewish family[8] and grew up in Swampscott, Massachusetts. She is the daughter of Dorothy J. (née Tishler) and Louis E. Stahl, a food company executive. She attended Wheaton College in Massachusetts, where she received an honors degree in history.[10]

Stahl began her television career at Boston’s original Channel 5, WHDH-TV, as a producer and on-air reporter. She joined CBS News in 1971 and became a correspondent in 1974. “I was born on my 30th birthday,” Stahl later wrote of the experience. “Everything up to that point was prenatal.”[12] Stahl attributes her tenure to CBS News to the Federal Communications Commission’s inclusion of women in its positive action mandate in 1972: “TV stations scoured the country for women and black people with any news experience,” according to A Friend in New York had called me to tell me about a memo floating around on CBS News dictating that ‘the next reporter we hire will be a woman’.”[13] According to Stahl, they were Connie Chung and Bernard Shaw “the other two ‘Affirmative Action Babies’ in the so-called Class of ’72.”[14] Stahl reflected on her early days at CBS in an interview, as she reflected on the night of the return of the Nixon-McGovern election of ’72 found on-air studio chair labeled with masking tape, not her name like her colleagues’, but “Female.” Stahl was mentor to CBS news producer Susan Zirinsky.[15]
Stahl’s notoriety grew after covering Watergate. “I found an apartment in the Watergate complex, brought all my stuff from Boston, and never missed a day of work…June 1972. Most of the reporters in our office were out covering the presidential campaign. So I was sent to cover the arrest of some men who broke into one of the buildings in the Watergate complex. CBS letting me, the newest employee, stay on assignment at Watergate showed how unimportant the story seemed: … I was the only television reporter to cover the early court appearances. When the five Watergate burglars asked for a bail reduction, I got my first message. Unlike my competitors, I was able to identify them. The next time the cameraman listened as I said, “Roll! That’s them!” And so CBS was the only network that got pictures of the burglars. I was a hero in the FBI.”[16]

Stahl was the presenter of Face the Nation from September 1983 to May 1991. She became a White House Correspondent during the presidencies of Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George HW Bush. At the 1980 Republican Convention, she broke the news on CBS that Reagan’s negotiations with ex-President Gerald Ford had collapsed and when asked who would run for vice president, the answer was, “It’s Bush! Yes, it’s Bush! George H.W. Bush might not have been far away, mostly alone, looking discouraged because he was certain he would not be selected. During her time at CBS, she covered the 1981 assassination of President Reagan and the 1991 Gulf War. During her career, she reported from the US-Russian summits and the economic summits of the industrialized countries, as well as from the national political congresses and election nights.[17]

In 1998, she appeared on the NBC sitcom Frasier, playing herself in the episode “Desperately Seeking Closure.” Stahl has written two books, the first of which, Reporting Live, was published in 1999:
By August 1989, at the age of 48, I had decided that I had already had the best day of my life. … Then we went to Rwanda to see the mountain gorillas, Dian Fossey’s gorillas in the fog. … After two and a half hours … there they were: two baby gorillas frolicking around like all four-year-olds. We snapped and stared. We were in the middle of her outdoor house, in her life. And then the silverback, the patriarch, seemed to welcome us while three females continued to nurse him. … We spent an hour in their world watching them fall and wrestle, nurse their babies, swing in the trees, forage for food – vines, leaves, berries – … so close that a woman could put her hand reached out to touch me. When I tried to reply, the leader hit my arm with a stick. “Non, Madame. C’est inderdit.” … What I decided that day with the gorillas in Rwanda was that maybe the best day of your life hasn’t happened yet. No matter what you think.[18]

During the 2020 United States presidential campaign, Stahl interviewed President Trump for a segment on 60 Minutes on October 20, 2020. Trump broke off the interview and complained about it on Twitter.[23][24][25] On October 22, Trump posted the full interview on Facebook,[26] ahead of its scheduled official release on 60 Minutes on October 25.[27]
In May 2021, Stahl was criticized by LGBTQ advocacy groups for a 60-minute special on transgender healthcare. CBS News, the producer of 60 Minutes, reported that the special “comes amid a spate of laws being rolled out in states across the country that would limit the care given to transgender youth,” and said the special will focus on ” Detransitioners”. PinkNews reported that advocacy group GLAAD called it “fear-mongering about transgender youth,” while also reporting that the ACLU’s Chase Strangio said that Stahl and others involved in the production “were fully aware of the damage they were doing with the segment from the last one make night”.[29]
