Ahna Wendy Mehus died on April 23, 2022 at the age of 19 in Fargo, ND.
Ahna was born on June 19, 2002 in Marshfield, WI to parents James and Wendy (Garrett) Mehus. Ahna shared the same date of birth with her grandpa, Wendell. Ahna and her family moved to Mayville, ND in 2004. Over the next few years, the family continued to grow. Ahna had two older siblings, Chantz and Haley. Finally, Ahna also had four younger siblings, Noah, Tatum, Zoey, and Mia.
Ahna was a very happy and busy little girl. She quickly helped out with cleaning, organizing, or directing traffic for siblings. She was her mama’s little shadow. As a child, Ahna spent thousands of hours with siblings and cousins riding bikes, building forts, and playing with dogs. She spent endless summer days with siblings, cousins, grandparents, aunts and uncles on the Minnesota lakes. There were very few family gatherings that Ahna would have missed as a child. Gatherings typically included dozens of cousins, as well as tremendous amounts of laughter and food.
When Ahna became an older child, she and her younger sister Tatum began participating in gymnastics in Fargo along with their cousins and friends. In middle school, Ahna became interested in running. She has been involved in cross country and track programs through MPCG. Ahna became a fierce competitor in running, frequently running with foot and ankle injuries. As Ahna became one of the older team members, she became the glue that held the team morale together, especially for the younger kids. Many family trips were spent attending state cross country and track meetings.
Ahna was very intelligent and did well in high school. Despite having a large number of friends who wanted to spend time with Ahna, she became more private as high school neared the end. The immediate family began to worry more about Ahna’s happiness after she graduated from high school.
In the fall of 2020, Ahna went to UND. She met some wonderful young people at AND and she loved her new friends at the dorm. This would have been Ahna’s happiest time in four years. Eventually, when COVID restrictions began to limit class time at college, Ahna transitioned to online education and moved back to her home in Mayville. Isolation and a sad atmosphere prevailed over the next few months.
Ahna had a close bond with her older sister, Haley. In the fall of 2021, Haley and Ahna packed up the car and moved to Naples, Florida to try a fresh start in life. Ahna loved the beach and the sea. Haley got a job and Ahna continued her online education. Unfortunately, as the winter months wore on, Haley became increasingly concerned that Ahna was becoming increasingly desperate. Ahna moved back to Mayville in the spring of 2022 and became roommates with her little sisters. Zoey and Ahna could be heard giggling and telling stories late at night. She tried medication for depression again, but then went off the medication and it slowly got worse.
Ahna thoroughly enjoyed her private times, taking long walks or runs with her music. She developed a fondness for Korean films and Asian culture. She loved planning her own healthy meals including kimchi and workout routines.
On April 23, 2022, Ahna took her final walk along the Goose River. She left her life that day and despite all heroic measures would not come back. She was so stubborn. She will be loved by everyone who knew her.
Ahna is survived by her parents: Wendy and James and her siblings: Chantz, Haley, Noah, Tatum, Zoey and Mia Mehus; her grandparents: Jeroy and Debbie Mehus; her aunts and uncles: Gary and Nicole Garrett, Colin and Gail Anderson, Terry and Dori Baesler, Wade Garrett, Julie Mehus, Dara Berdal, Eric and Mindi Mehus, Joe Mehus and Aaron Mehus; her cousins: Justis (m. Rachel) Garrett, Starr (m. Obi) Obembi, Colt, Saylar, Hawke, Nova, Navi and Avaya Garrett; Echo and Jaxon Anderson; Bailey, Cade, Reagan and Easton Baesler; Hannah and Ben Berdal; Annie Mehus and Brody Mehus.
Ahna was brought to her death by her little sister, Dominica Mehus, and her grandparents, Wendell and Juliann Garrett.

Funeral Service: To be held Tuesday, May 3, 2022 at 10:30 am at the Mayville Lutheran Church in Mayville, ND.
