Discovery has yet to finalize its deal with WarnerMedia, but there are already signs that cable news network CNN may be embarking on an overhaul. Discovery officially named CBS executive Chris Licht as the new head of CNN on Monday. The network’s former head Jeff Zucker reluctantly resigned earlier this month after failing to disclose an office relationship with former CNN marketing director Allison Gollust. If Discovery’s merger with WarnerMedia closes as expected next month, Licht would start at CNN in May after leaving CBS in “a couple of weeks,” according to an internal memo obtained by CNBC. Licht was the only person to call Discovery CEO David Zaslav about the Zucker acquisition, according to people familiar with the matter. There was no dispute between executives or outside staffing firms involved in the decision, said the people, who asked not to be named because the discussions were private. Zaslav and Licht have known each other for over a decade, and Licht has frequently attended Zaslav’s parties at his home in the Hamptons. “I have known and admired Chris for more than 15 years and I truly believe he is the best person to lead CNN Global as part of Warner Bros. Discovery,” Zaslav said in a statement.
