Story by Kyle Eustice

A native of Clovis, New Mexico, Shad Mayfield competed in his first national high school finals in Wyoming last summer. The excitement in the 15-year-old’s voice is palatable and it’s obvious that rodeo is everything to him.

“I’ve been into this my whole life,” Shad said. “My dad used to ride rodeo so he got me into it when I was 7.”

His father, Sylvester Mayfield, has made it to the NFR Finals twice (1985, 1987) and Shad is clearly impressed by that. He wanted to follow his father’s example and take up rappelling. Shad Calf Ropes and Team Ropes, and after three years in the NMJRHS he’s finally in the NMHSRA.

“I wanted to ride bulls at first, but I just didn’t like it that much anymore,” Shad explained. “The cops kind of scared me when I was little. I rode calves and oxen until I was 12.”

Shad soon found that he preferred calf rope and decided to do it full force. “I really like the sporting aspect,” said Shad. “It’s easier and my dad knows it inside out so he can teach me.”

Shad is fascinated by the competitive aspect of rodeo and the amazing opportunities rodeo has given him. He keeps in shape by “tying on a lot of calves.”

Shad attended junior high at Texico Junior High and is a sophomore at Texico High School, just 10 miles from Clovis. His mother, Jo Ellen Mayfield, happens to be a teacher there. “She keeps me going,” Shad joked.

Although he only wants to rappel, he will attend college as a backup plan. He dreams of winning the World Championship in calf roping, but realizes that he must be 18 before he can join the PRCA. He has been in the NMJRHS for three years and joined the NMHSRA in his freshman year of high school.

“I really like the community,” said Shad. “We go to events every weekend. I can be difficult to juggle at times, but I’ve gotten used to it. I made it pretty easy.”

Although his mother has never rodeo, she knows a lot about it by filming all of Shad’s events and paying close attention to what he is doing. His sister Shelby Mayfield, 17, also races barrels in the NMHSRA, so rodeo has always been a staple of the Mayfield household.

Shad’s greatest accomplishment was winning the NMJRHS 6th grade state championships in the ribbon roping category.

“It was pretty awesome,” Shad said. “My sister ran my tape, so we won it together.”

Every day Shad tends to the horses and cattle on his family’s small ranch. They have 20 horses on the property, but Reno is his favorite.

“I like his color and he always works well for me,” Shad said. “I have others that I ride too, but he’s my main horse.”

Although Shad used to play basketball and football, he quit when he entered high school to focus on rodeo. He is especially grateful to his sponsors, which include Impact Gel, American Hat Company, Willard Rope Company and Tres Rios Silver.

“It’s my life and I love to get out there every weekend,” Shad said. “I like to win too. I just expect to rope in smartly and always try to do my best.”
