Braxton Family Values (abbreviated BFV) is an American reality television series that aired on WE tv and premiered on April 12, 2011.[1] It chronicles the lives of the Braxton sisters – Toni, Traci, Towanda, Trina and Tamar and their mother Evelyn.
Braxton Family Values had received favorable reviews from critics and was recognized as a “guilty pleasure” by multiple media outlets. The fourth season was the most watched season with a total of 1.5 million viewers, an increase of 8% compared to the previous seasons.[2]

In January 2011, WE tv confirmed that it had signed Toni Braxton for a reality series entitled Braxton Family Values, which was being marketed as one of the network’s flagship shows.[4] In its first four broadcasts, Braxton Family Values earned an average household rating of .63 and attracted 350,000 women in the 18-49 demographic, three times the average of WE tv on Tuesday at 9 p.m. This prompted the network to renew the series for a 13-episode second season. In July 2011, WE tv ordered additional episodes for the second season – bringing the season to a total of 26 episodes.[8][9]

On March 20, 2014, WE tv announced the renewal of the fourth season of Braxton Family Values. Season 4 consisted of 26 episodes[15][16] and premiered on August 14, 2014.[17] On May 19, 2016, the fifth season aired on We tv. On May 12, 2017, Tamar Braxton announced in an interview with Billboard that the series would return for a sixth season.

Toni Michele Braxton (born October 7, 1967) is an American R&B singer. She has sold over 70 million records worldwide and is one of the best-selling artists in history. Braxton has won seven Grammy Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards, seven American Music Awards, and numerous other awards. In 2011, Braxton was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. In the late 1980s, Braxton began performing with her sisters in a musical group called The Braxtons. The group was signed to Arista Records. During her May 24, 2014 appearance on Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me! from NPR, she explained that she wasn’t singing to herself at the gas station. Pettaway, who worked as a gas station attendant at the Annapolis gas station, recognized them from local appearances and introduced himself, saying he wanted to produce them. 1989–1995: The Braxtons, Toni Braxton and the Breakthrough
Braxton and her four sisters Traci, Towanda, Trina and Tamar began performing as The Braxtons in the late 1980s and were signed to Arista Records in 1989. Their first single “Good Life” was released in 1990. Although the song was unsuccessful, it caught the attention of record executive Antonio “L.A.” Reid and record producer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds.[17] Reid and Babyface recruited her to record a demo of “Love Shoulda Brought You Home,” a song they wrote for Anita Baker for the Eddie Murphy film Boomerang soundtrack. Baker, who was pregnant at the time, did not record the song but suggested Braxton record it. Their recording was later included on the soundtrack along with “Give U My Heart,” a duet by Braxton and Babyface. Braxton, meanwhile, was signed to LaFace Records, the imprint distributed by Reid and Edmonds of Arista, and immediately began recording her debut solo album.
In July 1993, LaFace released Braxton’s self-titled debut album.[19] Produced primarily by Reid, Babyface and Daryl Simmons, it peaked at number one on the US Billboard 200 and debuted in the top ten on the album charts in Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand and the UK. Lead single “Another Sad Love Song” peaked at number seven and number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B singles charts, respectively. The album’s second single, “Breathe Again”, peaked in the top five on both the Hot 100 and R&B singles charts[21] and peaked at number 2 in the UK.[22] Other Toni Braxton singles were released in 1994, including “You Mean the World to Me”, “Seven Whole Days” and “I Belong to You/How Many Ways”.[21]

1996–1999: Secrets and Financial Troubles[edit]
In June 1996, Braxton released their second album, Secrets.[26] Motivated to “capture a little bit of everything,”[27] Braxton collaborated again with Babyface, but also collaborated with R. Kelly, Tony Rich, and David Foster on the album, which she co-produced.[28] A huge hit, it peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 and reached the top ten on most international charts. After 92 weeks on the chart, Secrets was certified 8× platinum and became Braxton’s second consecutive 8 million seller. Secrets sold more than 15 million copies internationally, further cementing Braxton’s superstar status.[25] The album’s lead single, “You’re Makin’ Me High,” marked Braxton’s first number-one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100,[21] while “Un-Break My Heart,” a ballad, was written and composed Diane Warren became the biggest hit of Braxton’s career to date. It spent 11 consecutive weeks at number one on the Hot 100 and enjoyed top 5 success worldwide.
As a result, Braxton topped several of Billboard’s year-end charts and won two Grammy Awards. one for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance[23] for “Un-Break My Heart” and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for “You’re Makin’ Me High,” as well as two American Music Awards for Favorite Female Soul/R&B Artist and Favorite soul/R&B album.[23] Still awaiting their financial rewards, Braxton eventually launched an unsuccessful lawsuit against Arista and LaFace Records. Shortly thereafter, she filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. The public reaction to these events was very harsh, most clearly expressed in an interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show.[33]
Braxton has appeared in two Disney Broadway shows: She made her Broadway debut as Belle in Beauty and the Beast on September 9, 1998, replacing Kim Huber. During her run on the show, Alan Menken wrote and composed a new song for the musical entitled “A Change in Me”, which he wrote and composed specifically for Braxton and which was still being used in the musical as of late July 2014. 35] She left production on February 28, 1999 and was succeeded by Andrea McArdle.[36] Her role in Beauty and the Beast marked the first (and only) time that a black woman took the lead role of Belle on Broadway. (In the UK, Michelle Gayle played the role in the West End.) It was also the first time a black woman had starred in a Disney musical on Broadway. In 1999, the lawsuit against LaFace Records was settled and Braxton was returned all of her belongings, giving her time to record The Heat, her first album in four years.
2000-2002: The Heat, More Than a Woman, and acting debut
After her three-year feud with LaFace and Arista was resolved, Braxton signed a new $20 million contract.[38] In April 2000 their third studio album The Heat was released. Taking a more hands-on approach, Braxton co-wrote and co-produced a handful of the tracks, where she adapted a more urban sound. It opened at number two on the US Billboard 200 with first week sales of 199,000 copies and eventually went double platinum in the US while selling over 4 million copies worldwide. Additionally, the album was nominated for Best R&B Album at the 2001 Grammy Awards, while the fast lead single “He Wasn’t Man Enough,” a worldwide top ten hit, won for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and for was nominated for Best R&B Song. In 2001, Braxton made her acting debut in director Doug McHenry’s comedy Kingdom Come alongside a cast that included LL Cool J, Jada Pinkett Smith and Whoopi Goldberg[42] [better source needed] A modest box office success that grossed US$23.4 million dollars worldwide.[43] That same year, Braxton recorded and released the Christmas album Snowflakes, which featured R&B-led original songs co-written with Keri Lewis and Babyface, as well as several remixes and covers of Christmas standards and carols. It received a mixed reception from critics, many of whom compared its nature to Braxton’s other work, but felt the stylized production and original material were too contemporary to conjure up images of Christmas and failed to make the top half of the Billboard 200 and eventually gold entered the United States.
In 2002, while preparing for the release of her fourth studio album, Braxton discovered she was pregnant with her second child. Knowing she would not be able to properly promote the album, she unsuccessfully lobbied Arista Records to get the label to delay the release until after she was born. In November 2002, More Than a Woman was released. The album started with an immediate commercial disappointment, peaking at number 13 on the US Billboard 200, but was less successful internationally. The first single, “Hit the Freeway,” had no effect, resulting in lackluster sales in general and the release of no further singles. More Than a Woman eventually went gold in the United States and has sold more than 800,000 copies worldwide.[44]
2003-2007: Residence Libra and Las Vegas
In April 2003, Braxton abruptly left Arista Records after 14 years and immediately signed with Blackground Records, led by Barry Hankerson, her manager at the time. She then starred in Aida as Aida from June 30, 2003, replacing actress Simone, [45] until she left the cast on November 16, 2003. [46] In April 2005, Braxton’s new Blackground/Universal label released Please, the first single from their fifth album, Libra. The album was originally planned for a June release but was pushed back several times and finally released on September 27th. Libra peaked at number four on the US Billboard 200 with 114,593 copies sold in its first week and peaked at number two thereafter for Best R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The album went gold in late 2005 and has since sold 679,000 copies worldwide.[44]
In May 2005, Braxton appeared on the season finale of American Idol 5, performing Elvis Presley’s “In the Ghetto” with soon-to-be winner Taylor Hicks. A month later, “The Time of Our Lives”, a duet with classic crossover singing group Il Divo, was released as a single and served as the official anthem of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Braxton performed the song, which reached the top ten in Switzerland, at the opening ceremony on June 9, 2005 in Berlin.[48] In August 2006, Braxton replaced singer Wayne Newton as Flamingo Las Vegas’ new headliner. The show, entitled Toni Braxton: Revealed, was scheduled to run six nights a week and run through March 2007. Braxton later confirmed that she would be extending her show through August 2007. Due to her success, it was reported that Braxton would extend her show through August 2008, although the show was later canceled to allow Braxton to focus on her health after she was diagnosed with microvascular angina.
On January 12, 2007, Braxton filed a $10 million lawsuit against her former manager Barry Hankerson, alleging “fraud, deception and double entender” and mismanaging her relationship with Arista Records. According to Braxton’s lawsuit, Hankerson put his personal financial interests ahead of hers by jeopardizing Braxton’s relationship with her former label with “double talk,” with Hankerson allegedly telling Arista that “Braxton didn’t want to record for Arista anymore,” and Braxton saying that “Arista was no longer interested in working with her”.[51] The lawsuit was settled with Braxton forced to pay Hankerson a $375,000 advance that would also receive a percentage of the sales of her next album, and Hankerson released Braxton from her contract with him. Hankerson claimed that the problems originally arose from a series of disputes with Braxton and her desire to include her husband in her music.

Also that year, Braxton starred opposite Jaime Pressly and Cloris Leachman as Rosalie Rosebud, a singer with an over-the-top personality, in the children’s musical adventure comedy The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure[76][77] and began filming a lead role in that Lifetime Movie Network film Twist of Faith, which premiered the following year.
2013–2014: Love, Marriage and Divorce, Broadway return and biographical film[edit]
In 2013, Braxton and his longtime musical creative partner Babyface began work on their collaborative studio album Love, Marriage & Divorce, which was released in February 2014 on Motown Records. It received positive reviews from music critics, who called it “quality R&B”, and debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200 and at the top of the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums list with first-week sales of 67,000 copies .[80] Love, Marriage & Divorce was nominated for Best Album Alive at the 2014 World Music Awards and won Best R&B Album at the 57th Grammy Awards.[81] The lead single “Hurt You” hit number one on the US R&B Songs for Adults chart, becoming Braxton’s first song since her release of “Just Be a Man About It” in 2000.[82] The song also peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop Airplay chart.[83][84]
In March 2014, Braxton returned to Broadway in the musical After Midnight alongside Babyface. They were the third rotation in the role of “Special Guest Star” after Fantasia Barrino and KD Lang, and performed at the Brooks Atkinson Theater from March 18-31, 2014. In May 2014, Braxton published a memoir, Unbreak My Heart: A Memoir, through Harper Collins Publishers. In it, Braxton talks about her professional success and struggles and the self-healing she took into her hands after her own diagnosis with the autoimmune disease lupus and her son’s diagnosis with autism.[86] In October 2015, Toni released the Christmas album Braxton Family Christmas with The Braxtons on Def Jam Recordings. In January 2018, Braxton starred in the Lifetime film Faith Under Fire.[101] In March her eighth studio album Sex & Cigarettes, her first solo album in eight years, was released on Def Jam Recordings.[102] An adult contemporary R&B album featuring production by Fred Ball, Babyface, Dapo Torimiro and Tricky Stewart, debuted at number 22 on the US Billboard 200 and number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Sex & Cigarettes received mostly positive reviews from music critics[103] and was nominated for Best R&B Album at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards.[104] The second single, “Long as I Live,” topped US adult R&B songs and became Braxton’s eighth chart-topping hit, while breaking a tie with singers Maxwell and R. Kelly to give her sole possession of the second-most number one in the 24 years of the charts. year history.[105] It also received a Grammy Award nomination for Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Song.[104]

The Braxtons are an American musical quintet consisting of singer Toni Braxton and her younger sisters Traci Braxton, Towanda Braxton, Trina Braxton and Tamar Braxton. Though commercially unsuccessful, the group’s first single, “Good Life,” launched eldest sister Tonis’ solo career. All five members reunited in 2011 to star alongside their mother, Evelyn Braxton, on the WE-TV reality television series Braxton Family Values.

The Braxtons’ parents are Rev. Michael Braxton Sr. (born June 26, 1947) and Evelyn Braxton (born January 14, 1948). Their first child, Toni Michele Braxton, was born on October 7, 1967. Michael Conrad Braxton Jr., the only son, was born on November 17, 1968, then Traci Renee Braxton was born on April 2, 1971. Traci died on March 12, 2022. Towanda Chloe Braxton was born on September 18, 1973. The Braxtons’ fifth child, Trina Evette Braxton, was born on December 3, 1974. The youngest sibling, Tamar Estine Braxton, was born on March 17, 1977. They are originally from Severn, Maryland.[4]
The sisters began to harmonize when a then five-year-old Tamar demanded, “Someone bring me toilet paper!” Each sister and brother Michael soon went into the bathroom and began singing the “Toilet Paper Song”. The Braxtons credit this incident as their first songwriting experience and the first time they harmonized as a group. As they grew up, they sang in the choirs of several churches and traveled the East Coast with their religious parents, who sang at various events.[6]
1989–1991: Good Life and lineup changes
Toni, Traci, Towanda, Trina and Tamar Braxton signed their first record deal with Arista Records in 1989. In 1990 they released their first single “Good Life”. It would be their only single as a quintet. “Good Life” was not a hit, peaking at #79 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart. At the time of the single’s release, the members’ age differences created a problem with marketing. Subsequently, the Braxtons were canceled by Arista Records.
1991, during a showcase with Antonio “L.A.” Reid and Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, who were in the process of founding LaFace Records, Toni Braxton, minus her four sisters, was selected and signed as the label’s first female solo artist. At the time, the remaining members were told that LaFace was not looking for another girl group as she had just signed TLC.
1992–1995: Record deal and Traci’s pregnancy
After Toni’s departure from the group in 1991, the remaining Braxtons members became backup singers for Toni’s first US tour, music videos, and promotional appearances. Traci, Towanda, Trina and Tamar were featured in the music video for Toni Braxton’s third single “Seven Whole Days” from her debut album.
In 1993, Bryant Reid, vice president of LaFace Records A&R, signed the Braxtons to LaFace. However, the group never released an album or single for the record label. When Reid joined Atlantic Records, he convinced LaFace executives to allow him to bring the group to Atlantic as well. They signed to Atlantic the following year to a three-album deal.
It was reported in Vibe magazine that Traci Braxton had left the group in 1995 to pursue a career as a youth counselor.[10] However, it wasn’t confirmed until 2004, when Towanda Braxton appeared on season 2 of reality show Starting Over, that Traci wasn’t allowed to sign with Atlantic because she was pregnant at the time.
1996–1997: So Many Paths[edit]
In June 1996, Tamar, Trina and Towanda returned with a new album entitled So Many Ways, which shared the same title as the lead single. Released on August 13, 1996, the album peaked at number 26 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.[11] It became their first and only LP. Atlantic Records A&R Vice President Bryant Reid served as executive producer on the album. At the time of publication, Reid told Billboard Magazine, “I had a vision for her back then that was about young sophistication with sex appeal.” So Many Ways included productions from Jermaine Dupri and Daryl Simmons along with Christopher “Tricky” Stewart and Sean “Sep” Hall. The album also included a cover of Diana Ross’ hit “The Boss” and Klymaxx’s song “I’d Still Say Yes”.[9]
The Braxtons released a music video to promote “So Many Ways.” It was directed by Cameron Casey and starred aspiring actor Mekhi Phifer. The trio also performed a remixed version of “So Many Ways” with rapper Jay-Z on September 9, 1996 at the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. The single was also used as the opening track on the soundtrack to the comedy film High School High. “So Many Ways” peaked at number 83 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1996, number 22 on the Billboard R&B chart and number 32 on the UK Singles Chart in January 1997.[15]
The album’s second single, “Only Love,” was released on January 25, 1997 and peaked at number 52 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. A music video for this song was also released.[11] A Masters at Work remixed version of the third Braxtons single “The Boss” reached #1 on the Billboard Dance/Club Play chart in early 1997.[11] “Slow Flow” was the last single released from So Many Ways. It peaked at number 26 in the UK Singles Chart in July 1997, becoming their highest charting single in the UK.
The Braxtons also acted as the opening act for Toni Braxton on the European leg of their Secrets Tour in 1997.
1998–1999: Breakup[edit]
The Braxtons decided to split up as a group after lead singer Tamar Braxton left in 1999 to pursue a solo career with DreamWorks Records. However, the members continued to sing and play in various other projects. There was a lot of drama surrounding the situation, which is one of the reasons why Towanda started over. She’d gotten wind of Tamar’s signing from industry insiders rather than Tamar himself. This created tensions between the group in particular as they were planning to make a second album with the inclusion of Traci at the time.
2000–2010: solo projects[edit]
Trina appeared in Tyler Perry’s 2004 play Meet the Browns as Tracy Stevens. She was also part of the play Rise, written by Salt of Salt-n-Pepa and Christopher “Play” Martin of rap group Kid ‘n Play, and starred as Deena Jones in an Off-Broadway production of Dreamgirls. In 2004, Trina Braxton starred in The Walk with Eva Pigford and Vanessa Bell. She has also starred in two independent films, including Jail Party, and hosted the off-air Urban Idol for UPN. She also made a cameo appearance in Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself as a member of a band performing with the character of singer Mary J. Blige. In 2009, Trina joined the wedding band Simply Irresistible as the lead singer.[18] In 2012, Trina left the band to pursue a solo career and released her debut solo single “Party or Go Home” in March 2012.
Trina and Tamar performed as backing singers and dancers throughout Toni’s Libra Tour in 2006. They also appeared in Toni Braxton: Revealed at the Flamingo Hotel and Casino until R&B singers Sparkle and Towanda Braxton replaced them.
Towanda Braxton appeared in Season 2 of the reality show Starting Over. She performed and recorded a solo song, “Here I Am,” for the show and did a radio interview on the Wendy Williams Experience about her time on Starting Over. Towanda is also a member of the Zeta Phi Beta fraternity and was pawned at Bowie State University in 1995. In September 2005, the People magazine website reported that Towanda was pregnant.[21]
Tamar Braxton released her debut solo album Tamar in 2000. She also made a cameo appearance in the music video for “He Wasn’t Man Enough”. She briefly appeared as Sasha in the stage version of Madea Goes to Jail in 2005 alongside Tyler Perry and Cassi Davis. Tamar co-wrote several songs and sang backing vocals on several of Toni’s albums including Snowflakes, More Than a Woman, Libra and Pulse. 2011–2014: Braxton family values[edit]
In January 2011, WE tv confirmed that it had signed Toni Braxton and her sisters Traci, Towanda, Trina and Tamar for a reality series entitled Braxton Family Values, which is being marketed as one of the network’s flagship shows should. The show explores the relationship between Toni, her mother and sisters, as well as the interpersonal relationships of each family member.
