Nate Burleson

American NFL player, TV presenter and rapper

American football player

Nathaniel Eugene Burleson[1] (born August 19, 1981) is a Canadian-born television host, American football commentator, and former wide receiver. He played college football for the University of Nevada, Reno and was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings to the National Football League (NFL) in the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft. Burleson was also a member of the Seattle Seahawks and the Detroit Lions.

Now at Paramount (formerly ViacomCBS), Burleson co-hosts CBS Mornings and covers football for CBS on its program The NFL Today and on Nickelodeon. He was previously the co-host of Good Morning Football on the NFL Network and a New York correspondent for the entertainment news show Extra. He has appeared in several rap songs under the New Balance name.

Early years[edit]

Burleson was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. At the time, his father, Al Burleson, was playing defenseman for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was born into a productive and close-knit athletic family. His oldest brother, Alvin Jr., played college football for the University of Washington Huskies and the Western Illinois University Leathernecks. Another older brother, Kevin, played professional basketball and was a former point guard for the Charlotte Bobcats of the National Basketball Association (NBA). His younger brother, Lyndale, played college basketball for the University of Nevada Wolf Pack.[2] Kevin and Nate Burleson are one of only two sibling duos where one brother played in the NBA while the other played in the NFL.[3] As a sign of his father’s influence, Nate Burleson’s Seattle Seahawks jersey number, 81, was his father’s high school number.[2]

In 1983, his father signed with the United States Football League (USFL) Los Angeles Express and moved the family back to the United States. However, Burleson remains proud of his Canadian heritage, sporting a maple leaf tattoo and expressing interest to the media in representing Canada at a World Cup.[3] After an injury ended Alvin Burleson’s playing career, he moved with his family to his hometown of Seattle, Washington, USA, where he worked for Associated Grocers. Nate Burleson attended Rainier View Elementary School in Seattle. As a freshman, he attended Lindbergh High School in the suburb of Renton, then transferred to O’Dea High School in Seattle, where he graduated. As a senior, he was named the Seattle Times City Athlete of the Year.[6]

Burleson was also on the school’s track team, competing as a sprinter and hurdler. He won the 1999 state title in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 38.70 seconds and finished eighth in the 110-meter hurdles as a junior.[7]

College career[edit]

Burleson hoped to attend the University of Washington, his father’s alma mater, but was not offered a football scholarship. Instead, he accepted a scholarship offer from the University of Nevada, Reno, and played for the Nevada Wolf Pack. In the 2002 season, he made 138 receptions, the second-highest in NCAA history. In his senior year, he led the NCAA in both receiving yards and per-game receptions. During his time in Nevada, he totaled 248 receptions for 3,293 total yards and 22 touchdowns. He was named a first-team All-America by the American Football Coaches Association, an All-WAC and team MVP by the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), and a second-team All-America by The Sporting News and CNN/SI Team. He currently holds the WAC and Nevada records for single-game receptions with 19 catches. He graduated with a degree in Human Development and Family Studies.[6]

Career[edit]

Minnesota Vikings[edit]

Burleson was selected by the Minnesota Vikings as the 71st overall pick in the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft. While showing promise, Burleson didn’t put up strong numbers in his rookie season. In his sophomore season, in 2004, an injury to fellow receiver Randy Moss opened up a chance for Burleson as he became the team’s number one receiver. Burleson put up strong numbers, surpassing 1,000 receiving yards for the first time in his career. In addition to being a great receiver, Burleson is also an outstanding special teams player. He is the only player in NFL history to have three punt returns of 90 yards or more.[9]

Seattle Seahawks[edit]

Burleson with the Seahawks in 2009

On March 24, 2006, Burleson signed a seven-year, $49 million offer sheet to play with his hometown Seattle Seahawks. In retaliation for the Vikings signing an offer sheet with former Seahawks guard Steve Hutchinson, the Seahawks inserted clauses into Burleson’s offer sheet that made it virtually impossible for Minnesota to match (much like the Vikings did with Hutchinson). The bid sheet said the full $49 million would be guaranteed if Burleson played five games in a season at Minnesota State or if his annual average exceeded the average of all running backs on the team combined. The Vikings played eight home games a year in Minneapolis, and at the time of the bid sheet, the team was spending well under $7 million a year on its entire running back corps. On the other hand, Seattle was spending over $7 million a year on just one of its running backs (Shaun Alexander). The Vikings were given seven days to match the bid sheet, but declined. Minnesota received the third-round pick from Seattle in the 2006 NFL Draft; However, Seattle received no compensation for Hutchinson’s departure.[10] On September 7, 2008, in Seattle’s season opener against the Bills, Burleson tore ligaments in his knee. He was placed on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.

Burleson holds the Seahawk team record for most punt return yards in a single season (2007) as well as career punt return yards.

Detroit Lions[ edit ]

In the early hours of the NFL free agency period on March 5, 2010, Burleson agreed to a five-year, $25 million contract with the Detroit Lions. Burleson rejoined his former offensive coordinator, Scott Linehan, with whom he had a career-best season in 2004, catching 68 passes for 1,006 yards and nine touchdowns while playing for the Vikings.[12] In 2011, Burleson was named a recipient of the Detroit Lions-Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association/Pro Football Writers Association media-friendly “Good Guy Award” for his interactions with the media. On September 24, 2013, Burleson fractured his forearm in two places in an early morning car accident.[13] It was reported that Burleson tried to save a pizza from falling off a seat in his car and lost control of his vehicle in the process. He was disfellowshipped by the Lions on February 13, 2014.[14]

Cleveland Browns[ edit ]

On April 6, 2014, Burleson signed a one-year contract with the Cleveland Browns[15] but was cut August 30.[16]

CBS Star Nate Burleson Grew up in Washington but Has Embraced His Native Roots ‘Ultimately, I Am Canadian’

CBS star Nate Burleson grew up in Washington but has embraced his native roots: ‘Ultimately I’m Canadian’

Former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Nate Burleson is a Washington product in every way. Raised in Seattle, he turned a successful amateur career in the Emerald City into an 11-year NFL career.

Long before he played at O’Dea High School in Seattle or at the University of Nevada, Reno, Burleson spent his earliest years in Canada. As proud as a Washingtonian might be, the veteran wideout and current CBS Sports announcer doesn’t want to hide where his roots really lie.

It’s not wrong to say that Burleson signed with his hometown team when he joined the Seahawks in 2010. After all, he spent most of his childhood and youth in Seattle.

However, his various NFL teams have never listed his birthplace or hometown as Seattle. He was born on August 19, 1981 in Calgary, Alberta and moved to the United States in 1983.

In a 2010 interview with The Province, Burleson said he was proud of his Canadian heritage, even though he only spent a small part of his life there. As a child, he wore his father’s old Canadian Football League clothing and later framed one of the jerseys.

“Ultimately, I’m Canadian. I have a flag tattooed on my leg so I definitely represent all Canadians out there.” Nate Burleson

At the time, Burleson, who now works at CBS’ The NFL Today and CBS Mornings, said the cold weather in Calgary often kept him from visiting during the NFL’s off-season.

“I end up looking for a warmer place,” he said.

His father Al had an all-star career in the CFL

Decades before Burleson set fire to defense at the University of Reno, Nevada, and the NFL, his father worked hard to keep offense from scoring. A standout defenseman at the University of Washington, Al played in the CFL from 1976-1981.

The elder Burleson, a 14th-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Rams in 1976, received the 1979 CFL All-Star honors. He totaled 26 interceptions, recovered six fumbles and forced two more in the CFL.

He moved to the United States with his family in 1983 and played for the USFL’s Los Angeles Express. However, the veteran defenseman never made it back to the NFL.

Burleson isn’t the only notable Canadian player to reach the NFL

Burleson played 135 NFL games from 2003 to 2013, the eighth-highest total by a Canadian-born player. Only Rob Meier, a former defensive end for the Jacksonville Jaguars who played in 138 games from 2000-08, had a higher number among non-specialists entering the 2021 season.

Longtime Dallas Cowboys long snapper L.P. Ladouceur, who last played last season, holds the record with 253 games.

They’re far from the only notable Canadians to have reached the NFL. Bronko Nagurski, the standout defensive tackle and fullback, grew up in Canada but moved to Minnesota when he was five. The four-time Pro Bowler won three NFL championships in eight NFL seasons and was later inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Arnie Weinmeister only played six seasons in the NFL from 1948 to 1956. However, he was so dominant, winning four first-team All-Pro selections during that span, that he eventually earned a place in the Hall of Fame despite his relatively short pro career.

Former Indianapolis Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt lived in Ontario until he went to college. Mark Rypien, former Washington Football Team quarterback, two-time Super Bowl champion, was born in Calgary but moved to the United States as an infant.

Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Chase Claypool could be the next big Canadian NFL player. A second-round pick in 2020, Claypool had 62 catches for 873 yards and nine touchdowns as a rookie. He ran for two more points on a Steelers team that won the AFC North.

Claypool still has plenty of time to catch Burleson in the stats department. Only time will tell if he eventually gets a Maple Leaf on his leg too.
