He played college football at Indiana University.

Early years[edit]

As a senior, he received Parade All-American and All-Southern Section honors after leading his team to the playoffs. He also played baseball and was drafted by the San Francisco Giants.

College career[edit]

Laufenberg accepted a football scholarship to Stanford University, where Bill Walsh was the head coach at the time. He was redshirted as a freshman behind Steve Dils. The next year, John Elway enrolled at the school, so Laufenberg decided to transfer to the University of Missouri after being listed as the third row on the depth chart. At the time, Missouri had just introduced the Veer offense and Phil Bradley was the starting quarterback, so he decided to transfer to Los Angeles Pierce College near where he lived at the end of his freshman year.[1]

In 1980, Laufenberg passed 1,590 yards and received offers from schools in the Big Ten Conference. He accepted a scholarship from head coach Lee Corso to Indiana University, where he became a two-year starter at quarterback.

As a junior, Laufenberg had a 3-8 record and registered 1,788 passing yards, 8 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. In his senior year, he had a 5-6 record, 2,468 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions and received All-Big Ten honors with honorable mentions.

He was also 2-0 against Purdue University.

Career[edit]

Washington Redskins (first stint) [ edit ]

Laufenberg was selected by the Washington Redskins in the sixth round (168th overall) of the 1983 NFL Draft. He was also selected by the Chicago Blitz in the 20th round (235th overall) of the 1983 USFL Draft. As a rookie, he was drafted inactive for every game as a third-string quarterback on a team that reached Super Bowl XVIII. The next year, he was placed on the injured reserve list with a strained shoulder.

In 1985 he competed with Jay Schroeder for the backup position behind Joe Theismann. He was waived on September 2 after the team decided to keep only two quarterbacks on the roster.

San Diego Chargers (first stint) [ edit ]

On October 1, 1985, Laufenberg was signed by the San Diego Chargers to assist Mark Herrmann after starter Dan Fouts suffered a knee injury, but was cut on October 15 to make way for quarterback Joe Dufek.

Washington Redskins (second stint) [ edit ]

On November 21, 1985, Laufenberg was signed to assist Jay Schroeder for the final five games of the season after linebacker Lawrence Taylor fractured Theismann’s right leg on Monday Night Football.

In 1986, he fought for a backup position in the preseason against recently signed Doug Williams and rookie Mark Rypien. He was released on August 26.[7]

Although he never appeared in a regular season or playoff game during his time with the Redskins, Laufenberg was a hugely popular player with fans and the media. He was nicknamed “Mr. August” for his come-from-behind wins in the preseason.

New Orleans Saints[edit]

On August 28, 1986, Laufenberg was called for waivers by the New Orleans Saints, but was released four days later when the team decided to keep only two quarterbacks. On September 22, he was brought back after Bobby Hebert suffered a broken foot and was given a chance to play in his first game of the regular season when he came in to time the clock in a 38-7 win over Tampa Bay. 11]

Kansas City Chiefs[edit]

On May 28, 1987, Laufenberg was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs as a free agent and released on September 1.[12]

Washington Redskins (third stint) [ edit ]

On September 14, 1987, he was signed to serve as Williams’ replacement after Schroeder sprained his right shoulder in the season opener. Players would go on strike in the third week of the season, those games were canceled (reducing the 16-game season to 15), and the NFL decided that the next few games would be played with substitutes.

Although he did not cross the picket line, he was released when Schroeder returned to the lineup on October 27.[13] Because he was only on the roster for two games, he missed out on getting a one-game Super Bowl share.

San Diego Chargers (second stint) [ edit ]

On April 21, 1988, he was signed by the San Diego Chargers as a free agent and reunited with new offensive coordinator Jerry Rhome, who was his quarterback coach with the Redskins. When presented with an opportunity to compete for the starting job that remained open after Fouts retired, he beat Mark Malone and got the chance to record his first start and throw in the NFL.

Laufenberg started in the first 6 games of the season before breaking 3 ribs against the New Orleans Saints.[16] He appeared in 8 games, recorded 2 wins, and completed 69 of 144 passes for 778 yards with 4 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. He was circumcised on April 17, 1989.[17]

Dallas Cowboys[edit]

In 1989, he signed with the Dallas Cowboys and reunited with Rhome, the team’s quarterback coach. He would also make the roster by beating Scott Secules for the third string quarterback job.

In 1990, he was promoted to the backup quarterback position after Steve Walsh was traded to the New Orleans Saints after three games of the season. The Cowboys had a 7-8 record and needed a win to secure a playoff berth when Laufenberg was forced into action after quarterback Troy Aikman injured his right shoulder against the Philadelphia Eagles, resulting in a 17-3 loss. In the final game of the year as a starter against the Atlanta Falcons (4-11), he completed 10 passes in 24 attempts for 129 yards and a touchdown in a 26-7 loss that positioned the Saints for the final playoff wildcard spot.[ 20]

The next season, the team went to training camp with Aikman, Laufenberg, Cliff Stoudt and Bill Musgrave as quarterbacks. He was circumcised on July 30, 1991.[21] On August 25, the Cowboys traded for Steve Beuerlein to increase the backup position and released Stoudt and Musgrave, choosing to keep only two quarterbacks.

Laufenberg is also credited with giving Daryl Johnston the nickname “Moose”. In the offensive sessions, Johnston towered over the other full-backs and Laufenberg said he looked like “a moose in a herd of deer.”[22]

Ohio Glory (WLAF) [ edit ]

In 1992, he was working as a sportscaster for the Cowboys’ flagship radio station, KVIL, when he was ranked #2 overall by the Ohio Glory of the World League of American Football.[23] He started the first 2 games before being passed down the depth chart by Pat O’Hara. He later got a chance to start in an extra game for an injured O’Hara. He had 622 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, 6 interceptions and was sacked 14 times.

His co-host Brad Sham has called him the best color analyst in the industry. The National Sports Media Association has named him Texas Sportscaster of the Year three times.[25]
