Meet Babyxsosa, the Eclectic Underground Rapper Doing Things Her Own Way

“Sorry, I just had something to eat,” Babyxsosa says sheepishly as she responds to our FaceTime. She looks just as demure as her Instagram — comfortable clothes, no makeup — and sounds exactly like her songs, her high-pitched voice cutting through the white noise of our call.

When you first hear 19-year-old artist Babyxsosa, her voice immediately stands out in the saturated world of SoundCloud rap. In a genre of breezy lo-fi trap that’s traditionally been male-dominated, the Richmond, Virginia native is poised to prove herself a real force to be reckoned with this year — and all before she heads out this June turns 20 years old.

In the few tracks she has released on SoundCloud, it’s easy to see that Babyxsosa’s sound is diverse; The refreshing “EVERYWHEREIGO,” for example, showcases the range and control of her melodic, high-pitched voice, while one of her more recent drops, “HECTIC,” has the artist rapping softly for most of the song. Since joining the New York music collective’s surf gang six months ago, the up-and-coming SoundCloud artist has been slowly moving underground, garnering a loyal, supportive fanbase that’s sure to grow.

Through it all, her authenticity shines. Online, offline and in her music, Babyxsosa only does what she wants, even if that sometimes means doing it alone. Read our interview with her below.

can you tell me a little bit about yourself

I’m known as Babyxsosa. 19. I am Cancer. I’m from Richmond, Virginia. I’ve been writing music since elementary school. I started playing the oboe in middle school. That’s where I learned [how to read music]. Then I started DJing in high school and learned how to make beats. I started going into the studio, watching people develop – just trying to learn everything behind the scenes. I was supposed to go to graphic design college and do an internship at this place in New York, but it didn’t work out.

Where should you have gone to school? Why didn’t it work?

Virginia Commonwealth University, but I wasn’t accepted. They said I didn’t send all my stuff in on time. It was around the same time that I applied for this internship, so I wasn’t really up to date. I got the internship with me, so I didn’t care. But I couldn’t move to [New York] for an unpaid internship. So I started rapping, instead of trying to make beats or release mixes all the time, I started using my own voice.

Did you also want to do design during your internship?

Yes, I think they wanted me for my animations. I was doing these art shows back then – I was doing these moving visuals with my mixes behind them, so it was a song played with something on the projector. I sent them some films, my graphic design – like my actual art – and they just said, “We like your work and you would be useful in the office.” [Laughs]

But after all that, I was like, you know, I can’t come to New York — I’m not even 18. So that kind of put a fire under my butt. To see that I could achieve all my goals, but they still flew past me. I thought, “No, next time I’ll be ready to do what I want to do.”

How did you get into visual arts and design?

I had this mishap accident, so after that I spent a lot of time on the computer just with SoundCloud and stuff. I couldn’t really do anything but sit around the house, so I sneaked in and listened to music. I just wanted to do photoshoots, set design, everything.

I [was a cheerleader] for about 14 years. It’s almost equivalent to this rap stuff in terms of performing, dressing, makeup, traveling, having to be in a place by a certain time, moving around on a schedule. Our routines used to be two minutes and 30 seconds long, so it’s like singing a song. Aside from the actual sport I do, everything is pretty much the same.

In your music you alternate between rapping and singing. Was a style there first?

I started out rapping, freestyling – listening to a song made me feel like I could do better. Just me rapping, all jokes. Then people started taking it seriously and I realized that I’m actually good. [As for] the singing, I don’t really know how that happened. I guess my homie cranked up a slow beat and was like, “I got this beat for this girl, let me see how you sound on it.” And then I just took the whole song.

It was easier to sing, honestly, but I’ve been writing music since I was [young]. My father gave me two guitars, one electric and one acoustic. I’ve always been grounded, so I guess you could say I’ve always been writing music in my free time and trying to perform it softly. I was on my sad shit. Every week I performed for my grandma in the garage.

When did a wider audience really connect to your music?

2016, 2017. When I was mixing and DJing, people just didn’t sleep with me. People were just haters! You know, badmouthing a woman. But once I start rapping or singing, they can’t really talk about me. Because my work is actually good. You know, n****s can talk about my DJ skills or whatever, but they can’t really talk about my music. Because they can’t.

So you experienced this discrimination as a young woman as a DJ rather than as a musician.

Damn yes! damn yes They try to call you a groupie or a slut – not what you need to be called. They don’t call you a DJ. And they don’t even try to pay you.

People were just haters! You know, badmouthing a woman. But once I start rapping or singing, they can’t really talk about me.

When did you feel it got better?

Ever since I started working with the surf gang [of my music collective], I guess. So in the last 6 months I got more credit. For example, this is a real ass bitch. She says a real ass. This is actually good content.

When this Pitchfork article came out, everyone was pretty supportive. But now I would say that everyone is pretty quiet. I don’t really get hate or love. First it was hate. And then it was love. And now it’s like they’re just watching. Like, “What’s next? Is it just a one-time thing?”

When you shift a little to your music, your style has lo-fi soundcloud trap vibes. Did that inspire your sound?

Honestly if I had never heard my music I wouldn’t even know what sound you are talking about. There’s no intention – whatever producer you see there, it’s random. They sent me a beat, I heard it and I liked it. I’m not aiming for a specific sound. I actually fuck with other people’s beats. If I didn’t want to collaborate with others, I could produce all my music myself. I could only rap on my beats.

Other people’s beats inspire you.

Of course, I asked my producer Giane, “What were you thinking about when you made that beat?” And if I’m freestyle, I won’t.

Where else do you get inspiration?

Honestly, it’s just what’s in my brain and experiences. All life experiences, no outside inspirations.

Are there any artists you look up to? who did you just hear

There’s this mode that I go into [while recording] where I feel like the shit, where I’m like, ‘Oh, I feel like Carti. I feel like Kanye.” But not really otherwise. I’ve been listening to surf gang since I left New York and joined my crew. Like this guy from Florida, his name is Vonte. I don’t really listen to anyone. My SoundCloud Likes might be some old songs. Fetty Wap.

That influence from 2016. That was one of the last great years of music I think.

you are not lying Once Uzi fell around Thanksgiving – Thanksgiving 2016, everything after that, rubbish! I was just talking to someone today like, “Where was I when Lil Baby exploded?” I heard him on the radio and I was like, “Who is that?” Someone said, “Lil Baby.” I had to catch up. Do you know when Famous Dex got attracted? I wasn’t there for that! The last stuff I personally heard was in 2016. But people started listening to Kodak and Famous Dex, it’s all new to me.

It’s also difficult to keep up as everything is happening so fast.

Because it doesn’t beat! Two people that I think are doing their best are Megan [Thee Stallion] and Da Baby. But that’s because they play all the damn time.

Is there a music scene in Richmond?

It’s basically like if you go to SoundCloud and listen to my related tracks, you will see GAWD he produced “EVERWHEREIGO. You will see Prince Gravy, Lil Percy. So there are people in the rap underground. Black Kray, he’s from here. There’s a scene that SoundCloud s**t heard. Then there is a punk scene where they make hardcore music. And then there’s the indie scene, and that’s the people that throw shows every week, house shows. That’s the Richmond music scene – it’s just a bunch of house shows with live bands and people drinking PBR.

Do you feel like that scene influenced you at all?

Yes, because they don’t book me here. It didn’t make me make better music, but it did make me… I’m not the type to go out there and network. Instead of getting angry about it, I’m just going to do shows somewhere else. I get booked everywhere except here.

It almost stokes your fire.

It does, but subconsciously. At the same time, I might not want to do shows in Richmond. Because who am I performing for? A bunch of haters. The last two shows I did in Richmond I had to leave early to remain professional. People you don’t particularly like will come to your events. I’m not saying they’re ruining it, but who am I really performing for when that’s the majority of the people here?

It’s like I’m not even a Richmond artist. My friend does the most Spotify gigs in Richmond and is often booked for R&B shows. And they disregard him. One venue attempted to call him dramatic for bringing color to [the entertainment], when honestly that’s the only problem in the Richmond music scene right now. The racism. They don’t pay, so I made a comment, “Well, did you pay him? If we’re talking about good deals, is there any deals involved if he doesn’t get paid?”

I told my friend once you stop doing free shows you will stop getting the free disrespect. That’s how it is in Richmond. They’re trying to do things to attract Richmond, but the support isn’t there. The energy here is like crabs in a bucket; You have to step on other people to get up. So I personally stay in my house. I stay in my lane. I don’t have to step on anyone, and no one can step on me unless I’m even in their way.

I told my friend once you stop doing free shows you will stop getting the free disrespect. That’s how it is in Richmond.

Does your family support your career?

Yes. I live with my grandma and she supported me by just letting me be here and work on my music. My dad encourages me to give me advice and not fool me into not telling me that this content is bad. He gives me constructive advice like, “Maybe you need to be a little tougher, put more energy into your shows.” My mother wants me to set a good example for the young girls. [Laughs] But everyone who is my family and friends supports me.

What are you looking forward to next?

I’m looking forward to performing and getting back into the momentum of traveling. Flying scares me so much. Even by bus. I make it to my seat calmly and keep my cool. That’s all. Just to see 2020 to see how well I’m handling it. Because I will grow from it.
