Blackmail, Risk & Untested Waters Inside the Coming Out of Country Radio’s Blair Garner, Cody Alan

In 1994, a year after Premiere Networks launched the nightly radio show After MidNite, behind-the-scenes host Blair Garner faced a crisis. A disgruntled former employee blackmailed Garner and threatened to “out” him in a national mainstream publication.

“I had to tearfully tell my business partners that I’m actually gay. I cried. My business partner once told me, ‘Don’t break this or my kids won’t go to college,’ and we ended up having to pay that person a significant amount of money to walk away. That wouldn’t happen today.”

As a matter of fact. You can’t blackmail someone with information they’ve already publicly disclosed. Garner, who now hosts Westwood One’s Blair Garner Show, came to his audience on January 6 by posting a photo to Facebook revealing that he had married a man, Eric Garner, on September 24, 2016.

Meanwhile, on Jan. 12, Cody Alan — the host of cable TV CMT Hot 20 Countdown and iHeartMedia late-night radio show CMT After MidNite — similarly came out via an interview with People magazine.

Neither knew in advance that the other was taking this step. But both make a statement by taking a career risk in a genre with audiences considered conservative. Garner took a low-key approach, while Alan worked with the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) to enact a more carefully orchestrated disclosure.

“In telling this story, I wanted to be sure that I could make a difference for those who may not yet understand what it means to be gay — or perhaps don’t know anyone in their own lives who does,” reasoned Alan . “I saw it as a chance to spread a little more love and acceptance.”

Many entertainment figures have come out as gay over the past 30 years, including Elton John, Melissa Etheridge, Neil Patrick Harris, and Ellen DeGeneres. Such sitcoms as Will and Grace and Modern Family have placed gay characters at the center of their cast.

But such an admission is still new in the country. Chely Wright came out in May 2010, and Ty Herndon and Billy Gilman followed in November 2014. All three made their announcements more than a decade after they were last in the commercial country mainstream with hit singles or gold albums. Alan and Garner are the first in the genre to make the move at the peak of their public reach.

“It’s encouraging that the landscape is evolving into a place where people feel comfortable being their authentic selves,” said Zeke Stokes, GLAAD’s Vp of Programs.

In the not too distant past, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people typically kept their gender preferences hidden for fear of repercussions such as physical or verbal abuse, or losing their family and/or job. Covering their tracks took effort: they withheld conversations about much of their private lives, sometimes dating inappropriate people to keep up appearances, or changing language to hide gender. For example, they might have changed the pronoun “he” to “she” or changed the structure of a sentence to avoid lying while avoiding detection.

“You get very good at it very quickly, so you can do it in no time,” says Garner. “It has its own share of problems, as sometimes you have to revise your wording or your stories.”

A 2007 study by the American Civil Liberties Union found that companies lose $1.4 billion annually in lost productivity from LGBT employees who essentially go into hiding — exhibiting higher levels of absenteeism, and covering up details about her life reduces her ability to focus on her work.

“It’s amazing,” says Garner. “You think back to the early years of After MidNite and were so concerned about being seen with another man. None of that exists in my life anymore.”

Stokes says that since Wright came out in 2010, public opinion “has evolved dramatically around LGBTQ rights and acceptance.” And acceptance is likely to increase as each new generation becomes more comfortable around gay people than the previous age group. According to a 2016 Pew Research Center poll, about 45 percent of adults over 70 support same-sex marriage, while 75 percent of millennials support it.

“As we see the country music fan base becoming younger, more progressive and more diverse, that kind of acceptance is a natural byproduct of that,” says Stokes.

Acceptance is a keyword. Alan says he hasn’t had any negative feedback.

“I chose to focus on the positives,” he adds, “so it probably wouldn’t have made much of a difference anyway.”

Garner laughs at the two disappointed comments he received: “a couple of divorced women who thought they were the ones” who were going to marry him.

Neither lost partners due to their admissions, and the country’s artistic community has been vocal in their support. Carrie Underwood, Dierks Bentley and Toby Keith were among a sizable list of acts who tweeted positive public messages to Alan. Keith Urban was touched when Garner asked permission to use a song from his Defying Gravity album My Heart Is Open at his wedding. Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood were reportedly excited to meet Garner’s spouse.

That kind of response makes others more likely to get to their audiences on country radio. And while no one has said so outright, it likely means there will come a day when the genre will have an artist or two popping out when they’re in the midst of their commercial heyday.

While their critics may demonize gay people, the people who come out often do so in an effort to live more honestly.

“[I felt] like I wasn’t going to bring my whole self to work,” Alan notes, “and I don’t think anyone should leave a part of themselves out to do a job that they do.” loves.”

In return, they will likely make a difference in their audience.

“The common denominator when it comes to accepting LGBTQ people is knowing someone in your personal life who is one of those things,” says Stokes, citing research that says 80 percent of Americans now know someone who is is homosexual, bisexual or transgender. “Nothing can replace that personal connection, but the second best thing to make sure people accept it is to see it in the media.”

Thus, Garner and Alan, whose combined daily audiences number in the millions, have the opportunity to indirectly help numerous families facing the same problem.

“I hope that through what Cody and I have done,” says Garner, “if ever a 15-year-old boy comes into his parents’ living room in tears and says, ‘Mom and Dad, I need to talk to you guys , ‘that those parents will have thought, ‘Well, this guy I hear on the radio is gay and he’s happy.’ I hope to take away some of their fear.”

Blair Garner

American radio personality

Blair Garner is an American radio personality best known for her work on country radio. Garner spent over two decades as a nationally syndicated overnight disc jockey, first hosting After Midnite for Premiere Networks and then The Blair Garner Show for Nash FM. In between, he hosted the morning drive-time program America’s Morning Show, also for Nash FM.[1][2]

As a radio host and DJ, he won the Academy of Country Music’s On-Air Personality of the Year award in 2004 and 2006. Garner has also been nominated for the prestigious Marconi Award and for Billboard Magazine’s Nationally Syndicated Air Personality. Throughout his career, Garner has worked at stations across the country, including Dallas, Washington, D.C., Houston, New York City and Los Angeles. He has also used the names “Skye Walker” (in New York) and “Blair Michaels” (in Los Angeles).[3]

The radio shows [ edit ]

Garner’s programming focuses on country hits, along with breaking music news and pop culture talks. In addition, Garner is considered one of the best interviewers in Nashville. Country music’s top stars, including Garth Brooks, Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton and Reba McEntire, have made it a point to appear on Blair’s show to promote their projects. Garner has also interviewed stars outside of Nashville, including Pharrell Williams, Pete Buttigieg, Zendaya, Pete Wentz, Kevin Costner, Gwyneth Paltrow, Lionel Richie, Henry Winkler, Joan Rivers, Kathie Lee Gifford, and WWE and UFC stars like Stone Cold Steve Austin, John Cena, and Brock Lesnar.

From 1993 to 2013, Garner hosted a show he created called After Midnite. The show has amassed an affiliate base of over 300 American and Canadian cities. After three years of ownership, he sold the program to Premiere Networks. As of 2021, Premiere continues to use the name for its overnight country show, which will be hosted by Cody Alan from 2013 to 2021 and Granger Smith from 2022.

In 2009, Garner relocated the show from Los Angeles to Nashville, where he hosted the show until 2013 when he hosted “America’s Morning Show” for Cumulus Media. This show originally launched in New York City on WNSH (New York City’s affiliate of Nash FM).

Cumulus Media (whose syndication company Westwood One competes with Premiere) then picked up the morning show for national syndication.[5]

In 2016, Garner stepped away from the grueling demands of the morning drive and opted to return to his earlier sleepover time slot with The Blair Garner Show. Garner made the move after his young daughter complained his work was interfering with her family life.

In 2019, Cumulus Media blocked Garner from airing an interview with 2020 Democratic Party candidate Pete Buttigieg.[6] Buttigieg is the first major party presidential candidate in a same-sex marriage. While discussing the challenges of his coming out in front of a country radio audience, Garner said it wasn’t part of his interview with Buttigieg.[7] Garner instead put the interview on SoundCloud.

In July 2020, Westwood One announced that Garner’s show would be canceled as part of a much larger program restructuring. The show was last aired on August 9, 2020.[3] When this news broke, Garner was able to announce what he and his husband had been working on behind the scenes for two years – The Mulehouse. Scheduled to open in April 2021, the Mulehouse is believed to be the first music/concert venue of its kind designed to host global live streaming events.[8]

Awards[edit]

Garner has nine Billboard Broadcast Awards, three Academy of Country Music On-Air Personality of the Year Awards in the national category (2004, 2006 and 2010). He has received four CMA nominations, one nomination for the prestigious Marconi Award, and is a member of both the National Radio Hall of Fame and the Country Radio Hall of Fame.
