South Florida’s Lane & Cameron Bess Set To Become First Father-Son Duo To Travel To Space Aboard Blue Orbit Spacecraft

MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Six people, including the first parent-child duo from South Florida, will travel into space together aboard the third manned flight of Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket.

The spacecraft is scheduled to launch December 9 from Blue Origin launch facilities near the rural town of Van Horn, Texas, with Miami Beach-based tech entrepreneur Lane Bess and his son Cameron on board. Lane Bess is the director and founder of Bess Ventures and Advisory. Cameron Bess is a content creator.

The crew also includes Good Morning America co-host and former New York Giants star Michael Strahan and Laura Shepard Churchley, daughter of Alan Shepard, the first American to fly into space and later walk on the moon.

Blue Origin named their suborbital spacecraft and rocket after their father.

The other spacemen are executive and philanthropic entrepreneur Dylan Taylor and investor Evan Dick.

This will be Blue Origin’s third space tourism launch, owned by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. It is also the first with a crew of six. Thursday’s journey will carry its passengers just over 62 miles, the internationally recognized ‘boundary’ between the discernible atmosphere and outer space, and will take 11 minutes. As the spacecraft ascends to the top of its trajectory and descends again, the crew experiences three to four minutes of weightlessness.

Blue Origin said that Strahan and Shepard Churchley were “guests of honor,” much like the last star Blue Origin sent to the edge of space, William Shatner, and didn’t pay for their tickets. It is not known how much Bess and the other paying customers pay for the short trip into space.

In a video posted on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swhujamaNFI), father and son talked about the upcoming trip.

Cameron carries an important message out into space that the LGBTQ community cares about.

“I think it’s exciting and inspiring to see someone like you doing something so monumental,” says Cameron. “I just want the people out there who don’t feel cool to feel cool just for a second.”

“I’m thrilled that the message he will convey goes beyond the traditional view of what people do with their lives and how they go about it,” says Lane Bess.

I’m a Twitch streamer who became an astronaut after flying into space on Jeff Bezos’ rocket. I loved floating in zero gravity but struggled with the journey back to Earth.

Blue Origin passenger Cameron Bess went from Twitch streamer to astronaut.

Bess, who had dinner with Jeff Bezos before the start, said the descent was the hardest part.

Such was Bess’ space journey and how they found zero gravity, as told to reporter Kate Duffy.

When my dad told me we would be the first parent-child duo to go into space aboard Jeff Bezos’ rocket, I couldn’t believe it.

My father, the founder of Bess Ventures, entered the ticket auction for Blue Origin’s first passenger voyage to the edge of space with Jeff Bezos. The ticket price far exceeded what he wanted to pay but he kept in touch with Blue Origin and eventually they offered dad two tickets.

As a kid, I never expected to be an astronaut. I’m a game designer and live streaming on the video sharing platform Twitch under the name “MeepsKitten” where I have over 3,200 followers.

Now I’m the first pansexual person to go to space – it’s crazy.

Six months before the flight, I found out that my dad and I were going into space on Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket. We had to keep it a secret from everyone.

We didn’t know who would be flying with us until November 23, when Blue Origin revealed our crew members were ABC’s Good Morning America coach Michael Strahan; the daughter of US astronaut Alan Shepard, Laura Shepard Churchley; philanthropist Dylan Taylor; and investor Evan Dick.

I arrived at Blue Origin’s Astronaut Village in the West Texas desert on December 5th, where I met the rest of the crew.

The first two days were all about training and getting used to the flight simulator.

One night the six of us were enjoying dinner with Bezos when he asked us what inspired us to go to space.

On the third day we took an assessment and passed a written exam that was a requirement of the Federal Aviation Administration.

start day

Breakfast was at 5:45 on the start day but I couldn’t eat anything. I was a little nervous, but only because I was so excited.

After leaving Astronaut Village at 6:30 a.m., we went up the launch tower, took photos with Bezos, and got into the rocket pod—all of which we rehearsed in practice.

When we took off, we all cheered. The upward thrust increased as the rocket flew higher, and obviously the sky was darkening. The view of Earth was incredible – like nothing I had ever seen before.

As the capsule reached the edge of space, we unbuckled our seatbelts and floated around in zero gravity. It felt like I was in a dream.

During training, we planned what to do in the capsule in zero gravity. I’ve been taking photos, punching my dad, doing somersaults and saying my catchphrase “meowdy” to my Twitch followers.

Floating in zero gravity for those three minutes was the fastest three minutes of my life.

After I strapped myself back into the seat, we began the descent. That was the hardest part for me because that’s where you experience the most G-forces. It felt like my face was being pulled back, there was a lot of pressure on my chest and I was getting a bit dizzy. The rest of the crew didn’t feel as bad as I did.

When the capsule landed, a group of people, including Bezos, my mother, and my sister, waited in the desert to greet Dad and me.

Back at the training center, everyone smiled and hugged, but I couldn’t function. I was speechless from the experience. A dream became reality.

Bezos then gave us each a Blue Origin astronaut pin.

Of the whole experience, the human moments were my favorite. Going through this experience as a team was amazing.

Some people think space travel is a show-off, but I think it’s about opening up space travel to everyone so we can make humanity better and save the planet – it’s all about people.
