But Probert’s battles on the ice were small compared to those he fought on the inside. I remember choking as he told me about his childhood, the untimely death of his father, the way his teenage hockey friends encouraged him to drink, drink, drink until he was around a street lamp, or vomited in the street. As the big guy, the tough guy, in a way he never had a chance. He was intertwined with alcohol before ever becoming an NHL player.
Once he had money, the parties were endless. Cocaine came into the picture, and with the personality of an addict, that was a disaster for Probert. His arrest at the border was just the beginning of his high-profile troubles. This was a guy who couldn’t play away games at times because he wasn’t allowed to leave the country, a guy who had to live within walking distance of Joe because he wasn’t allowed to drive. I did an interview with him once and at the end he asked if I could take him to the ice rink.
His time in Detroit ended badly
“You see him even when he’s in trouble,” Jacques Demers once lamented, “and he has that look that says, ‘I’m sorry.

At that point he was a memory here, part of the Bruise Brothers days, a guy who averaged more than 3.5 penalty minutes per game.
