Bruce Fleisher

American golf pro

Bruce Lee Fleisher (October 16, 1948 – September 23, 2021) was an American professional golfer.

Early years and amateur career

Fleisher was born in Union City, Tennessee and was Jewish.[1][2][3]

In 1950 the Fleisher family moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, where Bruce began playing golf with his brothers Leslie and Jerry. When Bruce was 14, the Fleishers moved to Miami, Florida.[4]

Amateur career[edit]

Fleisher got into golf at the age of seven by caddying with his two brothers. Fleisher attended Miami-Dade Junior College and Furman University.[1] In 1968, aged 19, he became the third youngest player to win the US Amateur. He was also the low amateur at the 1969 Masters Tournament. He turned pro in 1969.[1]

Career[edit]

Fleisher won both individual and team gold medals in golf at the 1969 Maccabiah Games. [6] [7]

Fleisher spent much of his regular career as a club professional; In 1989 he won the PGA Club Professional Championship. His regular tournament career was modest, with one win on the PGA Tour, the 1991 New England Classic, and a few wins in minor tournaments.

He was much more successful on the Champions Tour (now PGA Tour Champions) with 18 victories including a senior major, the U.S. Senior Open 2001.[1] Fleisher became the first player ever to have back-to-back victories in his first two Champions Tour events, which helped him win Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards in 1999.[5] He also has a win on the European Seniors Tour which came at the Irish Seniors Open in 2000.[1]

He served as the head coach for the USA Open golf team at the 1989 Maccabiah Games and the 2013 Maccabiah Games in Israel.[6]

Personal life[edit]

Fleisher and his wife, Wendy, lived in the Palm Beach Gardens area, Florida.[8] In 2017 he was inducted into the Greater Wilmington (North Carolina) Sports Hall of Fame.[4]

Fleisher died of cancer on September 23, 2021 at the age of 72.[9]

Professional golfer Bruce Fleisher, a longtime resident of Palm Beach Gardens, died Thursday after a long battle with cancer. He was 72.

Few golfers enjoyed the second chance nature of PGA Tour champions more than Fleisher. After winning just once on the PGA Tour in more than 400 attempts, he won his first two starts on the Over-50 circuit in 1999, winning a total of 18 titles including the U.S. Senior Open 2001.

“I played Bruce when he came home from the regular tour and it was like he never missed a green or a fairway,” said Roger Kennedy Sr., a Stuart resident and PGA professional who plays at the PGA Tour Champions played. “When he turned 50 I told him the only guy who could beat him on the Champions Tour was Lee Trevino. I knew he would clean up.”

“But forget the golf. What I remember most about Bruce was that he was the cutest guy in the world. He was just nice to everyone. No ego.”

Fleisher also got a second chance at life when he skipped the 2002 US Open and instead received a free physical exam during a PGA Tour Champions event at Vanderbilt, which revealed he had prostate cancer. Fleisher’s father, Herb, also died of cancer at the age of 72.

Nicknamed “Flash,” Fleisher was introduced to the sport at age 7 while playing with his two older brothers living in Wilmington, N.C. lived, started to be a caddie. The family moved to Miami when he was 14 and his game started to develop.

He won the 1968 U.S. Amateur at Scioto Country Club when he was 19 (then the third youngest) and that earned him a berth at the 1969 Masters where he was low amateur, beating Arnold Palmer by four shots in the first round. Fleisher, who was Jewish, also won the individual and team titles at the 1969 Maccabiah Games.

He earned his place on the PGA Tour by graduating from the famous Q-School at BallenIsles Country Club in 1971, which included Hall of Famers Tom Watson and Lanny Wadkins, as well as David Graham, John Mahaffey and Steve Melnyk.

Despite his success as an amateur, Fleisher struggled to stay on the PGA Tour and eventually became a PGA Professional based in South Florida. He twice won the South Florida PGA Professional Championship (1981 and 1987) and dominated local mini-tours.

Fleisher’s only win on the PGA Tour came at the 1991 New England Classic, when he defeated Ian Baker-Finch in a playoff at age 42. Baker-Finch would win the British Open next week.

His 50th birthday in late 1998 gave Fleisher reason to celebrate. He won his first two starts at Key Biscayne and Naples and would have won a third in a row if he hadn’t gotten sick while finishing second at Tampa. Phil Mickelson was the only player to match Fleisher’s one-two start last year.

Due to his lack of success on the PGA Tour, Fleisher had to go to Q-School to earn one of five spots on the 50 and Older Tour. Fleisher complained to then-PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem about the closed nature of PGA Tour champions.

“He said, Bruce, if you’re good enough, you get out of here,” Fleisher said. “I think I’m good enough.”

His wife, Wendy, said Fleisher’s greatest weakness was his lack of self-confidence. She used to hide newspaper articles that contained something negative about her husband.

“For some reason, Bruce never thought he was as good as everyone else thought he was,” Wendy said after winning the 2001 U.S. Senior Open won. “Whether he sees it or not, he has to deal with it.”

Fleisher earned almost 10 times more ($14.9 million) on the PGA Tour Champions than he did on the PGA Tour ($1.7 million). The family bought a house in BallenIsles – site of his success in the ’71 school – and lived there for more than 15 years. He attended the 50th anniversary of Jack Nicklaus’ 1971 PGA victory at the BallenIsles on February 28.

“He was a master at giving members free range advice,” said Jeff Fitzherbert, BallenIsles Director of Golf. “He was just kind, considerate and very approachable. As a former club professional, it was nice to talk to him about the golf business.”

In 2017, Fleisher was inducted into the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame.

“Bruce was the perfect pro,” his brother Jerry told the USGA. “He shaved every day. He always had a crease in his pants. He was a proud member of the Champions Tour.”

Fleisher is survived by his wife Wendy, daughter Jessica Jones, son-in-law Jason Jones, grandson Jake, older brothers Les and Jerry, and sister Karen.
