Canton Jones Biography, Songs, & Albums

Canton Jones is an award-winning, Grammy-nominated contemporary gospel singer, rapper, vocal arranger and producer based in Florida. His uncompromising, socially conscious approach to gospel weaves stirring instrumentation, traditional gospel, contemporary R&B melodies, hip-hop and electronic in a production style that blends the sonic approach of musical theater and dance music behind his rich baritone. His second-charting long-player Love Jones received a Grammy nomination and charted. One of Jones’ aesthetic hallmarks is his willingness to push the genre boundaries of 21st-century gospel: 2007’s Kingdom Business featured a dark, danceable production, choral singing and club sounds to underpin Jones’ deeply Christian worldview. In 2011, Dominionaire released the Grammy-nominated single “Window.” A remixed version of the long-player featured the controversial single “In Da Club,” which triggered certain segments in its lyrics, as a challenge for listeners to engage with their own imaginations. 2014’s Lust, Drugs & Gospel was a heavier outing dedicated to the addicted and offering gospel redemption in a musical slang that couldn’t be misunderstood. Subsequent performances such as 2016’s “I Am Justice” and 2018’s “Ghost” delved deeply into the complexities of race relations in America, personal responsibility, struggles with desire, and an exhortation to transcend petty political strife. In 2020, Jones collaborated with Christian country duo Zach & Rodney on the single “Selma Swamp,” which used allegory to directly address racial similarities and differences in the Deep South in a funky blues arrangement.

Jones grew up in a family of musicians in Deerfield Beach, a coastal town in southeast Florida. At the age of five Jones joined a vocal quartet his father started and by the age of 16 he was making beats for himself and other local singers. After high school, he moved his home base to Atlanta, where he attended Morehouse College. There, the singer joined the school’s popular glee club, which gave him the opportunity to tour extensively, singing for Oprah Winfrey, Stevie Wonder, Bobby Jones and Ray Charles, among others. Meanwhile, Jones also attended Pastor Creflo Dollar’s World Changers Church, where he sang in the choir. During a solo performance for one of the megachurch’s services, Jones caught the attention of the church’s youth pastor, who asked him to help in the youth ministry. He did, and not long after, at age 20, he made his recording debut for the Holy Hip Hop label. 3 months. & 12 Days… (2002) and founded his own outlet, CAJO. His breakthrough came with an appearance on the Grammy-nominated compilation album Holy Hip Hop: Taking Gospel to the Streets; His subsequent release, Love Jones (2005), debuted at number 11 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart. Jones’ profile continued to rise throughout the remainder of the decade and into the 2010s. His charting releases have included all five volumes in the Kingdom Business series, the Grammy-nominated single “Window”, 2014’s addictive theme “Lust, Drugs & Gospel” and 2016’s “I Am Justice”.

The sometimes controversial subjects Jones addressed in his most provocative songs became a norm when he released the digitally-issued Ghost in 2018: the gospel establishment finally got on board with its fans and supporting music critics. In late winter 2020, Jones released two albums a month apart: Kingdom Business 5 was released in March and Power was released in April. The latter was a full-length studio album that featured the tongue-in-cheek yet anthemic single “Oprah” in two different versions. The song urged listeners to embrace God’s miracles as readily as the television personality herself. In June, at the dawn of the 21st century civil rights summer, Jones collaborated with contemporary Christian honky-tonk duo Zach & Randy on the single “Selma Swamp.” . The track promoted tolerance and acceptance.
