The emotions behind his idea were fragile, but trusting Kale (“I Hope”) wasn’t difficult given his father’s death to point to. The idea was inspired by the death of his grandfather, Grandpa Bill, a Marine and the son of a Tennessee moonshiner, until the tax official evicted it to Illinois. They were very close during their childhood and during Bandi’s early singing career. When he got gigs at a local bar, the Missouri native could count on a familiar face in the front row.
“We played from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. and he was there all night until the wee hours and Grandma slapped him on the shoulder and said, ‘Hey, we have to go,’ and he didn’t want to go,” Bandi shares big smiles. Bill died about five years ago – six months before Bandi met his girlfriend Aimee.

“We wanted it to kind of hit you in the gut as soon as you find out,” Bandi says, and always does. He grew up listening to story songs and ’90s country, so it was natural for him to create a song that demands your full attention. It didn’t come together quickly, but word for word, note for note, everything fell into place. That’s the kind of tenacity that can only be learned from parents or grandparents.
“He was a very, very hard-working man,” says Bandi. “His work ethic, I think, is one of the things that was instilled in me. That never stops and keeps going.”
