Christopher John McCausland (born ca. 1977) is a British actor and comedian. He is known to television audiences for his role as Rudi on the CBeebies show Me Too! He is a regular performer at comedy venues across the UK including The Comedy Store. McCausland is blind due to retinitis pigmentosa.
Early life[edit]
McCausland was born c. Born 1977 in West Derby Village, Liverpool, but has lived in Surbiton, near Kingston upon Thames, since 1996, having moved there to study at Kingston University. He graduated in 2000 with a BSc Honors in Software Engineering. After a stint as a web developer, failing eyesight prompted a change of direction and he worked in sales for a number of years, during which time he made his stand-up comedy debut in 2003.[2]
Stand-up comedy[edit]
McCausland first tried stand-up in July 2003 at a new act comedy night in Balham. Within his first year as an actor he won the Jongleurs J2O Last Laugh competition, came second in the Laughing Horse New Act of The Year and placed third in Channel 4’s So You Think You’re Funny competition.
He took part in six stand-up shows at the Edinburgh Festival between 2005 and 2012 and was awarded the Creative Diversity Award for Comedy in 2011 by a Channel 4-led panel of broadcasters which also included BBC, ITV and Sky. He has performed all over the world, including Asia and the Middle East, and travels the UK regularly to play at the country’s top comedy clubs. He appeared on the BBC program Live at the Apollo on January 4th 2018 and most recently on January 7th 2022 he hosted the show. [3]

In 2014, McCausland hosted a national TV ad for Barclays promoting the benefits of their new talking ATMs. Also in 2014, he starred alongside Anna Crilly and Neil Fitzmaurice in the Jimmy McGovern drama series Moving On. In 2012, he appeared alongside fellow comedians in Jimmy Carr’s Comedians Special charity episode of Celebrity Deal or No Deal.
He appeared in three series of At The Comedy Store for Paramount Comedy in 2008 and for Comedy Central in 2010 and 2012. In 2011 he appeared in the ITV series Stand-up Hero. In 2010 he starred in BBC One’s year-end spoof news show Unwrapped with Miranda Hart. He was also one of the main characters in the CBeebies series Me Too! and played Rudi, the market trader. On October 18, 2019 he appeared on the BBC comedy panel show Would I Lie to You.[4] Then, on 2 December 2019, he appeared in another BBC satirical comedy panel show, Have I Got News For You[5], with his appearance also appearing in the extended version of the Have I Got A Bit More News For You episode was shown. In February 2020, he appeared in an episode of 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown on Channel 4. Chris McCausland has been performing his unique brand of observational humor on the UK live comedy scene since 2003. Stephen Portlock saw his last show during a performance at the Soho Theater in London.
At the end of Chris McCausland’s latest typically excellent offering, I was stunned by the comments of a sighted viewer. Why, I wondered, did this person want more about how Chris lost his sight. It’s akin to expecting a gay comedian to always talk about coming out before cracking a joke.
Also, one could argue that Chris actually granted this viewer’s wishes, at one point stating that he wasn’t always blind. He was a web designer, but then his eyesight got worse and the websites just got uglier. It’s typical Chris – taking material that could have encouraged pathos and creating hilarity instead.
After asking his wife how she met a boyfriend, he received a 35-minute response, and she didn’t finish her speech until they reached the front door. Chris remarked on being dealt a bad hand: โI have the wrong handicap. I should be deaf but able to see.โ
Discussing his blindness this time, Chris remarked, “You get used to it, right, but there are things that are happening in the world around you that one day you realize you’ve been operating in a slightly different reality all other.”
Much of Chris’ hour-long set alluded to absurd misunderstandings. For example, not realizing that soccer player Mario Balotelli is black, fantasizing about Postman Pat’s son (voiced by a woman in her 20s), and hating Mr. Tumble’s condescending tone before discovering that it is aimed at deaf children. He had recently spoken about his wife’s labor – he brought in a sandwich that was expected to last several hours and stayed there for 41 hours – “Bullshit for my baby’s health. Look at the state of my damn lettuce!โ
The intriguingly titled “Jesus Was Married And Look How It Turned Out For Him” โโgrew out of a discussion of religion, God and heaven – potentially silly targets, but again, amusingly handled. In fact, my only gripe with the show was a brief anecdote about a friend of his from the past who was afraid to use the office restrooms.
Chris didn’t imply that his friend had any particular mental illness, and the anecdote was I’ll admit it was funny, but I felt a little queasy afterwards. Overall though, Chris is only going from strength to strength and I look forward to seeing him perform again.
