Pérez learned to play the french horn in middle school and, with his mother’s support, joined his school’s concert band. Despite his mother’s disapproval due to the negative stereotypes associated with the rock and roll world, he decided to teach himself to play electric guitar. Pérez’ favorite musicians were Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Kiss, the Scorpions, Ozzy Osbourne and Iron Maiden.[2] He also admired Ricky Martin in the 1990s. Many of his guitar solos are inspired by Carlos Santana.[9]
Pérez wanted to flee to Los Angeles, California when he was seventeen to start a rock band. At that time he shared an apartment with his father and worked in a library. Pérez was asked by Tony Lares in 1986 to join his cousin Shelly Lares’ band. Lares told Pérez that Shelly performed Tejano music – a mix of traditional Mexican folk music, polkas and country music sung in Spanish or English. Pérez disliked Tejano music and wrote in To Selena, With Love that he joined Shelly’s band with “foot-dragging resistance” because the job paid more than library work. 1989–1995: Selena y Los Dinos and legal troubles
Selena y Los Dinos lead guitarist Roger Garcia married and left the music business in 1989. The group’s bassist, A.B. Quintanilla III had heard good things about Pérez from other Tejano groups. He and other band members went to watch Pérez rehearse with Shelly. Quintanilla invited Chris to one of Selena’s performances and asked if he would be interested in playing with Selena y Los Dinos. Pérez agreed, basing his decision on Los Dinos’ sound, which was “hipster and more sophisticated” than other Tejano bands, and he hoped to learn more about musical arrangements from A.B., whose work he admired.
Pérez auditioned for the group’s manager, AB’s father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr. Abraham initially disliked Pérez’s rocker image and insisted he change his appearance for the band. The elder Quintanilla feared that adding Pérez to the group could tarnish his daughter Selena’s “perfect image” and ruin her career. AB convinced his father to accept Pérez and encouraged Pérez to explore different genres of music and mold their sounds to his own liking. He and A.B became close friends and occasionally collaborated to write songs for Selena’s next recording. Like Selena, Pérez knew little Spanish, and lead keyboardist Ricky Vela tutored him.
In November 1990, Pérez was arrested for drink driving and speeding in San Antonio, Texas. A police officer got into an altercation with his cousin, and Pérez came to his cousin’s aid. After the brawl, police handcuffed Pérez and his cousin, but freed their boyfriend, telling him to “run, don’t walk” and “don’t even turn around.” When Pérez was booked, police reported that they initiated a high-speed chase and followed his car. Pérez reported that officers lied but decided not to pursue the matter further because it would be “[his] word against theirs.” He was released without charge but told Selena and Abraham about his run-in with the police. They appreciated being informed and this helped gain their trust.
A few months after his arrest, he was sharing a hotel room with two members of the Selena y Los Dinos street crew when the two drunk brothers began wrestling. Pérez was drunk too and got involved in the rough goings-on. A brother knocked the door off its hinges and holes were found in the wall inside the room. Pérez decided to sleep at home instead of in the hotel. Abraham fired the brothers from the band the next morning, but to Pérez’s surprise, Abraham accepted his apology and he was allowed to remain in the band. While Selena initially ended their relationship over the incident, she later forgave him.
Relationship with Selena[edit]
1989 Pérez and A.B. wrote Selena’s Coca-Cola commercial jingle. After the company accepted the text and Selena filmed the commercial, A.B. gave the band a vacation in Acapulco, Mexico. During the trip, Pérez realized he was attracted to Selena despite having a girlfriend in San Antonio. Pérez thought it was best for both of them if he tried to distance himself from her, but found it difficult and decided to try and develop a relationship with her. They expressed their feelings for each other at a Pizza Hut restaurant and became a couple shortly thereafter. They hid their relationship from their father for fear that Abraham would try to separate them. This was emphasized by Selena, who didn’t want to hide her feelings.
Suzette eventually reported the relationship to Abraham, who got Pérez off the bus and told him it was over. The couple secretly continued their relationship despite Abraham’s displeasure.[32] Selena drew hope from the fact that her mother Marcella approved of her courtship until one day Abraham stopped the tour bus and went to the back where Pérez and Selena were sitting. He yelled that their relationship was over and Selena yelled back. Pérez tried to calm them both down but got involved in the argument after Abraham insulted him by calling him a “cancer in my family”.[34] Finally, Abraham threatened to disband the group if they didn’t disband. Intimidated, Selena and Pérez backed away. Abraham fired him from the band and prevented Selena from running away with him, leaving Selena both devastated and heartbroken.
After Pérez was fired from the band,[36] he moved back in with his father and began making music wherever he could. He wrote that “free of this nerve-racking situation with her father and the other members of Los Dinos, I started enjoying my life again.” However, Selena suffered from their breakup and the two tried to keep in touch during their tour. On the morning of April 2, 1992, Selena banged on his hotel room door. She pushed her way in and started crying, saying she couldn’t go on without him. Selena wanted to get married that day, but Pérez argued that it wasn’t the right thing to do at the moment. Selena insisted that her father would never accept their relationship and would not attend any of their planned weddings. Pérez agreed and they eloped in Nueces County, Texas.[34]
Selena was sure that once they were married her father would leave her alone and they could be open together. They planned to keep the escape a secret until she found the right moment to reveal their marriage, but the media announced their escape over the radio within hours of the wedding ceremony. Selena’s family tried to track her down. Abraham did not take the news well and became estranged for a time. Selena and Pérez moved into an apartment in Corpus Christi until Abraham approached them, apologized, accepted the marriage and Pérez came back into the band.
Pérez became a fully accepted member of the Quintanilla family upon marriage, and Abraham asked Pérez to write songs for a rock band he led after opening a recording studio, Q-Productions, in late 1993. This collaboration resulted in a posthumous recording for Selena, when that rock group’s lead singer, Nando “Guerro” Dominguez, went to Selena’s house to begin recording. Pérez ended the recording session a few hours later when Selena asked to record Dominguez’s demo. Her version of the song remained unreleased until 2004, when it was added to her posthumous compilation album Momentos Intimos as “Puede Ser”. AB wrote “Ya No”, the final recording for Selena’s studio album Amor Prohibido (1994). He wanted to turn it into a rock song and asked Pérez for help.
1995–1998: After Selena, remarriage and fatherhood
In the spring of 1995, Abraham found out that Yolanda Saldívar, who ran Selena’s boutiques and fan club, was embezzling money. They held a meeting in early March where Saldívar denied she had anything to do with tax discrepancies in checks made out to her name. Despite her father’s warnings, Selena attempted to reestablish her friendship with Saldívar. On March 30, 1995, Selena and Pérez met with Saldívar at a motel to recover missing financial records for tax purposes.[48] When Selena and Pérez got home, she found that Saldivar hadn’t given her the correct documents. She called Saldívar, who tried to convince Selena to go back to her motel room alone. Pérez insisted it was too late, and he didn’t want Selena driving alone at night. Selena then agreed to meet up with Saldivar the next morning.
On March 31, Selena woke up early to meet Saldívar at the motel where she was staying. She met with Saldívar, who delayed delivery of papers with a story about a rape in Mexico.[49] Selena took Saldívar to a local hospital, where doctors found no evidence of rape. When they returned to the motel room, Selena ended their four-year working relationship. As Selena turned to leave, Saldívar reached into her purse, pulled out a Taurus Model 85 .38 caliber revolver, pointed it at Selena, and pulled the trigger. The bullet entered Selena’s right shoulder blade from behind, piercing a major artery that originated from her heart and exited just below her right collarbone. She ran into the motel lobby and collapsed on the floor. As motel employees gathered around her, she named Saldívar as her attacker.[51] Selena was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors determined the damage was irreparable. She was pronounced dead within an hour.[52]
Pérez couldn’t eat for two days after his wife’s murder. In his book, he says that when he couldn’t sleep, he began abusing alcohol and other drugs and became withdrawn. Family members noticed that he was losing weight quickly. Chris felt guilty for not protecting Selena from Saldívar.[56]
In 1996 he moved out of his Corpus Christi home and back to his father in San Antonio. John Garza introduced him to Venessa Villanueva and after they met, they became a couple in 1998.[2][57] In 2001, Pérez married Villanueva and they had two children, a boy Noah and a girl Cassie.
Although it was rumored that Villanueva did not want to divorce and wanted to try and work things out in their relationship,[59] the couple eventually decided that their relationship was irreconcilable. Pérez’s boyfriend, John Garza, moved in with him six months after Selena’s death. They began writing music that Pérez found healing. In 1998 he formed a rock band featuring Garza, Rudy Martinez (former member of La Mafia) on bass, former Selena y Los Dinos keyboardist Joe Ojeda and Jesse Esquivel on drums. The band’s name (the Chris Pérez Band) was chosen by Garza, Martinez, Ojeda and Esquivel. Chris preferred the name Cinco Souls, but the other band members wanted to capitalize on its “reluctant notoriety.”[2] The band was signed to Hollywood Records and headed to A&M Studios (now Henson Studios) in Los Angeles to begin recording their debut album. Pérez wrote the song “Best I Can” to explore his feelings about losing Selena and his struggle to move on without her. The song was not planned for the album for fear that listeners would think he included the track for commercial reasons, but Hollywood Records and the band convinced him to include it on the album after hearing the demo.
“Another Day” (about devotion to Selena) was included on the album. Ojeda wrote “Solo Tu”, a romantic ballad that Pérez turned into a rock song. Resurrection was released on May 18, 1999 and won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album.[32] The record company released two promotional singles (one in English and one in Spanish: the title track and the ballad “Por Que Tu Fuiste”) for radio stations with the intention of targeting both audiences. The Los Angeles Times wrote that the album was “upbeat and danceable, the lyrics almost uniformly speaking of loss, anger, violence and abandonment”.[2] The Chris Pérez Band was the opening act for the Mexican band Mana. In March 2000, Pérez began preparing for his second studio album;[71] On April 16, the band released their second and final album, Una Noche Más, before disbanding.[72] Pérez joined his brother-in-law AB’s band, the Kumbia All Starz, in 2006 and left in 2010 to form his own band. On April 7, 2005, Los Dinos reunited at the Selena ¡VIVE! Tribute concert.[74]

In March 2012, Pérez released To Selena, With Love, which detailed their relationship and struggles. He had been reluctant to write the book, saying fans asked him to write it. He did not seek the Quintanilla family’s approval to write To Selena, With Love and did not announce the project for fear of their reaction. He approached Abraham after the book was finished. Abraham approved it.[32] In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pérez said writing to Selena With Love helped him “move forward.”[32] The book was praised by critics and fans.[56][60][78] For Selena, With Love dispelled the rumor that Selena was pregnant when she died (which had surfaced in media reports after her death).[79]
In November 2016, Pérez announced that his book would be made into a television miniseries. This prompted Abraham to file a lawsuit against him as she violated a real estate agreement originally signed between him and the family two months after Selena’s death in 1995. The lawsuit also sparked a bitter spat between the family and Pérez, who took to Instagram in September 2020 and publicly accused the Quintanilla family of wiping out his legacy with Selena. Suzette released a rebuttal shortly after, and Perez later apologized. The case was settled in September 2021.

Pérez’ favorite musicians were Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Kiss, the Scorpions, Ozzy Osbourne and Iron Maiden.[2] He also admired Ricky Martin in the 1990s. Many of his guitar solos are inspired by Carlos Santana.[9]
Pérez wanted to flee to Los Angeles, California when he was seventeen to start a rock band. At that time he shared an apartment with his father and worked in a library. Pérez was asked by Tony Lares in 1986 to join his cousin Shelly Lares’ band. Lares told Pérez that Shelly performed Tejano music – a mix of traditional Mexican folk music, polkas and country music sung in Spanish or English. Pérez disliked Tejano music and wrote in To Selena, With Love that he joined Shelly’s band with “foot-dragging resistance” because the job paid more than library work. He became Shelly’s musical director after Tony left the group and co-wrote three songs for Shelly’s debut album in 1989. His guitar playing was well received by the band and their fans. He also formed a rock band with two friends around this time and made plans to leave Shelly’s band.
Career [edit]
1989–1995: Selena y Los Dinos and legal troubles
Selena y Los Dinos lead guitarist Roger Garcia married and left the music business in 1989. The group’s bassist, A.B. Quintanilla III had heard good things about Pérez from other Tejano groups. He and other band members went to watch Pérez rehearse with Shelly. Quintanilla invited Chris to one of Selena’s performances and asked if he would be interested in playing with Selena y Los Dinos. Pérez agreed, basing his decision on Los Dinos’ sound, which was “hipster and more sophisticated” than other Tejano bands, and he hoped to learn more about musical arrangements from A.B., whose work he admired.
Pérez auditioned for the group’s manager, AB’s father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr. Abraham initially disliked Pérez’s rocker image and insisted he change his appearance for the band. The elder Quintanilla feared that adding Pérez to the group could tarnish his daughter Selena’s “perfect image” and ruin her career. AB convinced his father to accept Pérez and encouraged Pérez to explore different genres of music and mold their sounds to his own liking. He and A.B became close friends and occasionally collaborated to write songs for Selena’s next recording. Like Selena, Pérez knew little Spanish, and lead keyboardist Ricky Vela tutored him.
In November 1990, Pérez was arrested for drink driving and speeding in San Antonio, Texas. A police officer got into an altercation with his cousin, and Pérez came to his cousin’s aid. After the brawl, police handcuffed Pérez and his cousin, but freed their boyfriend, telling him to “run, don’t walk” and “don’t even turn around.” When Pérez was booked, police reported that they initiated a high-speed chase and followed his car. Pérez reported that officers lied but decided not to pursue the matter further because it would be “[his] word against theirs.” He was released without charge but told Selena and Abraham about his run-in with the police. They appreciated being informed and this helped gain their trust.
A few months after his arrest, he was sharing a hotel room with two members of the Selena y Los Dinos street crew when the two drunk brothers began wrestling. Pérez was drunk too and got involved in the rough goings-on. A brother knocked the door off its hinges and holes were found in the wall inside the room. Pérez decided to sleep at home instead of in the hotel. Abraham fired the brothers from the band the next morning, but to Pérez’s surprise, Abraham accepted his apology and he was allowed to remain in the band. While Selena initially ended their relationship over the incident, she later forgave him.
Relationship with Selena[edit]
1989 Pérez and A.B. wrote Selena’s Coca-Cola commercial jingle. After the company accepted the text and Selena filmed the commercial, A.B. gave the band a vacation in Acapulco, Mexico. During the trip, Pérez realized he was attracted to Selena despite having a girlfriend in San Antonio. Pérez thought it was best for both of them if he tried to distance himself from her, but found it difficult and decided to try and develop a relationship with her. They expressed their feelings for each other at a Pizza Hut restaurant and became a couple shortly thereafter. They hid their relationship from their father for fear that Abraham would try to separate them. This was emphasized by Selena, who didn’t want to hide her feelings.
Suzette eventually reported the relationship to Abraham, who got Pérez off the bus and told him it was over. The couple secretly continued their relationship despite Abraham’s displeasure.[32] Selena drew hope from the fact that her mother Marcella approved of her courtship until one day Abraham stopped the tour bus and went to the back where Pérez and Selena were sitting. He yelled that their relationship was over and Selena yelled back. Pérez tried to calm them both down but got involved in the argument after Abraham insulted him by calling him a “cancer in my family”.[34] Finally, Abraham threatened to disband the group if they didn’t disband. Intimidated, Selena and Pérez backed away. Abraham fired him from the band and prevented Selena from running away with him, leaving Selena both devastated and heartbroken.
After Pérez was fired from the band,[36] he moved back in with his father and began making music wherever he could. He wrote that “free of this nerve-racking situation with her father and the other members of Los Dinos, I started enjoying my life again.” However, Selena suffered from their breakup and the two tried to keep in touch during their tour. On the morning of April 2, 1992, Selena banged on his hotel room door. She pushed her way in and started crying, saying she couldn’t go on without him. Selena wanted to get married that day, but Pérez argued that it wasn’t the right thing to do at the moment. Selena insisted that her father would never accept their relationship and would not attend any of their planned weddings. Pérez agreed and they eloped in Nueces County, Texas.[34]
Selena was sure that once they were married her father would leave her alone and they could be open together. They planned to keep the escape a secret until she found the right moment to reveal their marriage, but the media announced their escape over the radio within hours of the wedding ceremony. Selena’s family tried to track her down. Abraham did not take the news well and became estranged for a time. Selena and Pérez moved into an apartment in Corpus Christi until Abraham approached them, apologized, accepted the marriage and Pérez came back into the band.
Pérez became a fully accepted member of the Quintanilla family upon marriage, and Abraham asked Pérez to write songs for a rock band he led after opening a recording studio, Q-Productions, in late 1993. This collaboration resulted in a posthumous recording for Selena, when that rock group’s lead singer, Nando “Guerro” Dominguez, went to Selena’s house to begin recording. Pérez ended the recording session a few hours later when Selena asked to record Dominguez’s demo. Her version of the song remained unreleased until 2004, when it was added to her posthumous compilation album Momentos Intimos as “Puede Ser”. AB wrote “Ya No”, the final recording for Selena’s studio album Amor Prohibido (1994). He wanted to turn it into a rock song and asked Pérez for help.
1995–1998: After Selena, remarriage and fatherhood
In the spring of 1995, Abraham found out that Yolanda Saldívar, who ran Selena’s boutiques and fan club, was embezzling money. They held a meeting in early March where Saldívar denied she had anything to do with tax discrepancies in checks made out to her name. Despite her father’s warnings, Selena attempted to reestablish her friendship with Saldívar. On March 30, 1995, Selena and Pérez met with Saldívar at a motel to recover missing financial records for tax purposes.[48] When Selena and Pérez got home, she found that Saldivar hadn’t given her the correct documents. She called Saldívar, who tried to convince Selena to go back to her motel room alone. Pérez insisted it was too late, and he didn’t want Selena driving alone at night. Selena then agreed to meet up with Saldivar the next morning.
On March 31, Selena woke up early to meet Saldívar at the motel where she was staying. She met with Saldívar, who delayed delivery of papers with a story about a rape in Mexico.[49] Selena took Saldívar to a local hospital, where doctors found no evidence of rape. When they returned to the motel room, Selena ended their four-year working relationship. As Selena turned to leave, Saldívar reached into her purse, pulled out a Taurus Model 85 .38 caliber revolver, pointed it at Selena, and pulled the trigger. The bullet entered Selena’s right shoulder blade from behind, piercing a major artery that originated from her heart and exited just below her right collarbone. She ran into the motel lobby and collapsed on the floor. As motel employees gathered around her, she named Saldívar as her attacker.[51] Selena was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors determined the damage was irreparable. She was pronounced dead within an hour.[52]
Pérez couldn’t eat for two days after his wife’s murder. In his book, he says that when he couldn’t sleep, he began abusing alcohol and other drugs and became withdrawn. Family members noticed that he was losing weight quickly. Chris felt guilty for not protecting Selena from Saldívar.[56]
In 1996 he moved out of his Corpus Christi home and back to his father in San Antonio. John Garza introduced him to Venessa Villanueva and after they met, they became a couple in 1998.[2][57] In 2001, Pérez married Villanueva and they had two children, a boy Noah and a girl Cassie.
Although it was rumored that Villanueva did not want to divorce and wanted to try and work things out in their relationship,[59] the couple eventually decided that their relationship was irreconcilable. They filed for divorce in 2008.[60][61] Although Pérez remarried and had two children, he remained in touch with the Quintanillas after Selena’s death.

Pérez’s boyfriend, John Garza, moved in with him six months after Selena’s death. They began writing music that Pérez found healing. In 1998 he formed a rock band featuring Garza, Rudy Martinez (former member of La Mafia) on bass, former Selena y Los Dinos keyboardist Joe Ojeda and Jesse Esquivel on drums. The band’s name (the Chris Pérez Band) was chosen by Garza, Martinez, Ojeda and Esquivel. Chris preferred the name Cinco Souls, but the other band members wanted to capitalize on its “reluctant notoriety.”[2] The band was signed to Hollywood Records and headed to A&M Studios (now Henson Studios) in Los Angeles to begin recording their debut album. Pérez wrote the song “Best I Can” to explore his feelings about losing Selena and his struggle to move on without her. The song was not planned for the album for fear that listeners would think he included the track for commercial reasons, but Hollywood Records and the band convinced him to include it on the album after hearing the demo.
“Another Day” (about devotion to Selena) was included on the album. Ojeda wrote “Solo Tu”, a romantic ballad that Pérez turned into a rock song. Resurrection was released on May 18, 1999 and won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album.[32] The record company released two promotional singles (one in English and one in Spanish: the title track and the ballad “Por Que Tu Fuiste”) for radio stations with the intention of targeting both audiences. The Los Angeles Times wrote that the album was “upbeat and danceable, the lyrics almost uniformly speaking of loss, anger, violence and abandonment”.[2] The Chris Pérez Band was the opening act for the Mexican band Mana. In March 2000, Pérez began preparing for his second studio album;[71] On April 16, the band released their second and final album, Una Noche Más, before disbanding.[72] Pérez joined his brother-in-law AB’s band, the Kumbia All Starz, in 2006 and left in 2010 to form his own band. On April 7, 2005, Los Dinos reunited at the Selena ¡VIVE! Tribute concert.[74]
2010–present: The Chris Pérez Project, To Selena, With Love, Blue Mariachi Productions[edit]
In 2010, Pérez formed a new group (the Chris Pérez Project) with Puerto Rican singer Angel Ferrer and released Todo es Diferente.[75]
In March 2012, Pérez released To Selena, With Love, which detailed their relationship and struggles. He had been reluctant to write the book, saying fans asked him to write it. He did not seek the Quintanilla family’s approval to write To Selena, With Love and did not announce the project for fear of their reaction. He approached Abraham after the book was finished. Abraham approved it.[32] In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pérez said writing to Selena With Love helped him “move forward.”[32] The book was praised by critics and fans.[56][60][78] For Selena, With Love dispelled the rumor that Selena was pregnant when she died (which had surfaced in media reports after her death).[79]
In November 2016, Pérez announced that his book would be made into a television miniseries. This prompted Abraham to file a lawsuit against him as she violated a real estate agreement originally signed between him and the family two months after Selena’s death in 1995. The lawsuit also sparked a bitter spat between the family and Pérez, who took to Instagram in September 2020 and publicly accused the Quintanilla family of wiping out his legacy with Selena. Suzette released a rebuttal shortly after, and Perez later apologized. The case was settled in September 2021.
In August 2021, Pérez’ label Blue Mariachi Productions signed his first act, ZEUS. El Mero Necio aka Carlton Zeus.[80]
In December 2021, the 1997 biopic Selena was inducted into the National Film Registry for the film’s 25th anniversary. Pérez acknowledged the occasion by releasing a statement and a photo of a white rose.[81]

He was the antithesis of Abraham Quintanilla’s “clean, nice kids” in his early career as a guitarist for Selena y Los Dinos, a rebellious rocker, and a “long-haired tough guy.”[82] In an interview with the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, he admitted that he was uncomfortable being an entertainer.[77] Until the publication of his book, he had remained silent about his private life and shunned media attention.[34][86][87] Carlos Valdez, the district attorney who prosecuted Yolanda Saldívar, described Pérez as “shy and uncomfortable when in the spotlight,” and this was echoed by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.[77] His inability to talk about himself in interviews was also discussed in Valdez’s book. Valdez said the music business was not a job for Pérez, who enjoyed being a guitarist, calling it his “reason for [his] existence”. Valdez considers him “honest, sincere and someone to trust and believe in”.
Leila Cobo of Billboard Magazine believed his musical styles included contemporary cumbia music reminiscent of music produced by AB, R&B, rap and funk.[88] Chuck Taylor, a Billboard editor, called the Chris Pérez Project’s debut album “lots of classic rock elements”. Sun Sentinel’s David Cazares called Pérez’s debut album “average rock music”.[90] The San Antonio Express-News said that Resurrection was a fusion of “pop rock grooves and Tejano soul”. Pérez is known for pioneering Latin genres like cumbia and Latin rock.

In 2016, Pérez attended the unveiling of Selena’s likeness at Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in Los Angeles. He was also present at the inauguration of her Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 2017.
Most notably, Pérez wrote the 2012 bestseller To Selena, with Love, which focused on their life together. In an interview about it with CNN, Pérez spoke about the overwhelming response and support from fans following her death.
“When she died, we were shocked by the love and support we received from the fans. We weren’t prepared for that,” he said. “So I thought I knew about it, but when this book came out I was really shocked again at the response we got to it that I was waiting for. The response was crazy.”
On March 14, Pérez shared his thoughts on Selena receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Grammys.

In 2016, Selena’s father, musician Abraham Quintanilla, filed a lawsuit to block the adaptation of To Selena, with Love into his own TV show. USA Today reported in 2019 that the lawsuit had been settled and dismissed. The Quintanilla family was involved in the making of Selena: The Series, while as mentioned above, Pérez has stated that he wasn’t.
In his book, Pérez wrote about his father’s harsh reaction to the news that he and Selena were married, which he spoke to CNN about.
“I think the main reason [her father was unhappy] was that it hurt his pride and ego when he found out he was the last to know and when things got strained and things were said of him , it hurt me that he said it. But I didn’t let it get to me because I knew deep down that he knew what kind of person I was,” Pérez said. “The worst thing he said to me was that I was like a person to his family cancer.
