Are You Down Darlene Ortiz Talks Her Years With Ice-T and What Her Family Thought of the ‘Power’ Cover

Why write an all clear now?

Some people consider it a panacea, but it’s not. I don’t sensationalize or explicitly call out certain things. It’s the story. It happened and it was beautiful.

Based on the book, it seems like you and Ice-T still have a good relationship.

I wish it would be a better relationship, but there’s no hate there. I’m very disappointed with how it ended and how we chose to end it. I’m very disappointed, but how can I be mad at him at the same time? All these exciting things happened because of him. I met and supported him and he is still the father of my son. There’s no way it can get really ugly.

The letters he wrote you give the impression that he was trying to be open about the relationship.

Well, when that happened, the breakup, sure. Other things, years before? He was in denial. I don’t blame him. He didn’t want to end the relationship at the time, so he would do anything to stick with it. I just wanted to know if there are any adjustments we need to make. That’s all I wanted to know. But of course he stuck to his guns, and that’s why I threw in that line about Shaggy, because he kept saying, “It wasn’t me. What? I brought someone’s secretary home.” I have to laugh about it because it’s not the end of the world. I’m glad it didn’t get really ugly.

Yes, these things tend to get that way.

Especially nowadays with social media. I don’t know what it takes for me to call someone on social media. It’s stupid.

I tried to capture the time frame between events, from the moment you met him at Radiotron and he told you he wanted to put you on the cover, to when Rhyme Pays came out.

2 years. When we went on our first date, he said, “I don’t even have an album.” He was up front. He’s always been like this. He said: “I don’t even have a deal.” It had nothing to do with “Oh, I’m going to pose for some album”. I had never done anything like this. I was a kid in high school. It was interesting that he said he would. Everything he said he would do, he eventually did.

Talk a little about your childhood life and how it played into your relationship with Ice.

I had no instructions. He could have told me everything, I was so fascinated by him. He used to pimp on duty for extra money. That could have happened to me. I was so open when I met him.

He’s also an older guy. Was he like a father figure to you?

Yes, there is a 10 year age difference. I’d say that. Even though my dad was right there, I really looked up to Ice. My mother, another story.

were you the eldest

No, I’m the youngest. I was the last one living at home. All my sisters ran away when I was very young. The last one I was close to ran away when she was 14. Since then she has been alone and I was the one who stayed at home the longest. By this point, Rose [her mother] was getting tired. She couldn’t keep up with us, especially after that big incident.

Your life changed after you tried to set her bed on fire.

There is a great picture I added of my quinceanera with my mom. That was a year or two after that incident. You see, we both look terribly miserable in this picture. She shouldn’t even be there. After that I had to live with this woman. She got my child support and she wouldn’t let me go. I had to stay with her because I was underage. My dad’s family are the people that really really raised me and they’ve always been so loving and kind. My dad’s family said, “Let Rose come, it’s fine.” They knew she wasn’t going to screw anything up about the incident, and she didn’t either.

is your mother still alive

She passed.

What about your father?

He also passed.

I know you were very close to him. For those who haven’t read the book, talk about your relationship with your father.

What a great relationship. I don’t know if you follow me on IG or Facebook or something, I always talk about him. I’ll try not to cry… He’s just amazing. He used to say, “Mija, I don’t want to try to turn you into a boy, but I’ll do anything with you.” One moment he’s braiding my hair, the next we’re digging for worms, fishing, hunting, driving Motorcycle – he bought me my first motorcycle. He’s a biker. He didn’t care what he looked like and he would teach me that. He really got me through that. It shouldn’t matter what anyone thinks of you, become what you want. I can’t even think of what was wrong with him and when I met Ice he reminded me of my father.

American rapper and actor (born 1958)

This article is about the American rapper. For the drink, see Iced tea. For the train, see ICE T. For other uses, see Icet

Tracy Lauren Marrow[2] (born February 16, 1958), better known by his stage name Ice-T, is an American rapper, songwriter, actress and producer. He began his career as an underground rapper in the 1980s and was signed to Sire Records in 1987 when he released his debut album Rhyme Pays – reportedly the first hip-hop album with an explicit synopsis label. The following year he founded the record label Rhyme $yndicate Records (named after his collective of hip hop artists called “Rhyme $yndicate”) and released another album, Power, which went platinum. He also released several other albums that went gold.

Ice-T co-founded the heavy metal band Body Count, which he covered on his 1991 rap album O.G. Original Gangster, on the track titled “Body Count”. The band released their self-titled debut album in 1992. Ice-T encountered controversy over its track “Cop Killer,” which featured lyrics about the killing of cops. He asked to be released from his contract with Warner Bros. Records and his next solo album, Home Invasion, was later released in February 1993 through Priority Records. Body Count’s next album, Born Dead, was released in 1994, and Ice-T released two more albums in the late 1990s.

As an actor, Ice-T played small roles in the films Breakin’ and its sequels Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo and Rappin’ in the 1980s before making his starring role debut as police detective Scotty Appleton in New Jack City (1991). He received critical acclaim for his role in Surviving the Game (1994) and continued to appear in small roles in television series and other films throughout the 1990s. Since 2000, he has portrayed NYPD Detective/Sergeant Odafin Tutuola on the NBC police drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. A reality television show titled Ice Loves Coco ran for three seasons (2011-2013) on E! and showed the personal life of Ice-T and his wife Coco Austin. In 2018, he began hosting the true crime documentary In Ice Cold Blood on cable channel Oxygen, which is airing its third season as of 2020.

Early life[edit]

Tracy Lauren Marrow, the son of Solomon and Alice Marrow,[7] was born on February 16, 1958 in Newark, New Jersey[8].[9] Solomon was African American and his mother, Alice, was of a Louisiana Creole background. Solomon worked as a conveyor mechanic for the Rapistan Conveyor Company for decades. When Marrow was a child, his family moved to upscale Summit, New Jersey. The first time race played a big part in Marrow’s life was at the age of seven, when he became aware of his white friends’ racism towards black children. Marrow suspected he escaped similar treatment because they thought he was white due to his lighter skin.[3] Referring this incident to his mother, she said to him, “Darling, people are stupid”; Her advice and this incident taught Marrow to control the way the negativity of others affected him.

His mother died of a heart attack when he was in third grade. Solomon raised Marrow as a single father for four years with the help of a housekeeper. Marrow’s first experience of illegal activity came after a bicycle his father bought him for Christmas was stolen. After Marrow told his father, Solomon shrugged, “Well then you don’t have a bike.” Marrow stole parts from bicycles and assembled “three or four odd-looking, brightly painted bicycles” from the parts; his father either didn’t notice or never admitted it. When Marrow was thirteen, Solomon also died of a heart attack.

After the death of his father, the orphaned Marrow lived briefly with a nearby aunt and was then sent to live with his other aunt and her husband in View Park-Windsor Hills, an upper-middle-class black neighborhood in south Los Angeles. While his cousin Earl was preparing to go to college, Marrow shared a bedroom with him. Earl was a rock music fan and only listened to the local rock radio stations; Sharing a room with him sparked Marrow’s interest in heavy metal music.

High school, early criminal activity, military service[ edit ]

Marrow moved to the Crenshaw District of Los Angeles in eighth grade. He attended Palms Junior High, which consisted mostly of white students, including black students who traveled by bus from South Central to attend. He then attended Crenshaw High School, which consisted almost entirely of black students.

Marrow stood out from most of his friends because he didn’t drink alcohol, smoke tobacco, or use drugs. During Marrow’s time in high school, gangs became increasingly common in the Los Angeles school system. Students belonging to the Crips and Bloods gangs would visit Crenshaw and fight in the school hallways. While never an actual gang member, Marrow was connected to the former. Marrow began reading the Iceberg Slim novels, which he memorized and recited to his friends, who enjoyed hearing the excerpts and told him, “Yo, kick some more of that from Ice, T,” which Marrow made his famous gave nicknames. Marrow and other Crips wrote and performed “Crip Rhymes”.

His music career began with the band of Crenshaw High School vocal group The Precious Few. Marrow and his group opened the show and danced to a live band. The singers were Thomas Barnes, Ronald Robinson and Lapekas Mayfield.

In 1975, at the age of seventeen, Marrow was receiving Social Security benefits from the death of his father and used the money to rent an apartment at $90 a month. He sold cannabis and stole car stereos to make extra money, but didn’t make enough to support his pregnant girlfriend. After the birth of his daughter, Marrow enlisted in the United States Army in October 1977. After basic training, Marrow was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division.[16] While in the Army, Marrow was involved with a group of soldiers accused of stealing a carpet. While awaiting trial, he received a bonus check for $2,500 and walked away without a vacation, returning a month later after the carpet was returned. Marrow was punished extrajudicially as a result of his dereliction of duty.

During his time in the Army, Marrow became interested in hip hop music. He heard The Sugarhill Gang’s newly released single “Rapper’s Delight” (1979), which inspired him to play his own raps over the instrumentals of this and other early hip-hop records. However, the music didn’t match his lyrics or his delivery form.

While stationed in Hawaii (where prostitution was not a heavily prosecuted crime) as a squad leader at Schofield Barracks, Marrow met a pimp named Mac. Mac admired Marrow’s ability to quote Iceberg Slim, and he taught Marrow how to be a pimp himself. Marrow was also able to purchase inexpensive stereo equipment in Hawaii, including two Technics turntables, a mixer, and large speakers. Once equipped, he began learning turntablism and rapping.

Marrow learned from his commanding officer that he could receive an early honorable discharge because he was a single father. Marrow took advantage of this and was discharged as Private First Class (PFC – E3) in December 1979 after serving two years and two months.

During an episode of The Adam Carolla Podcast that aired June 6, 2012, Marrow claimed that after his discharge from the Army, he began a career as a bank robber. Marrow claimed that he and some associates began conducting takeover bank robberies “like [in the movie] Heat.” Marrow then elaborated, stating, “Only punks go to the drawer, we have to go to the safe.” Marrow also stated that he was glad the United States justice system had statutes of limitations that had likely expired when Marrow revealed his involvement in several admitted to Class 1 crimes in the early to mid-1980s.

In July 2010, Marrow was wrongly arrested. A month later, when Marrow went to trial, the charges were dropped and prosecutors stated “a clerical error had occurred in the rapper’s arrest”. Marrow gave advice to young people who think going to jail is a sign of integrity, saying, “Street credibility has nothing to do with going to jail, it has everything to do with it to stay out.”[17]

Career [edit]

music [edit]

Early career (1980–1981) [ edit ]

After leaving the army, Marrow wanted to stay away from gang life and violence and instead make a name for himself as a DJ. As a tribute to Iceberg Slim, Marrow adopted the stage name Ice-T. While DJing at parties, he received more attention for his rapping, leading Ice-T to pursue a career as a rapper. After breaking up with his girlfriend, Caitlin Boyd, he returned to a life of crime, robbing jewelry stores with his high school friends. Ice-T’s raps later described him and his friends pretending to be customers to gain entry before smashing the sight glass with baby sledgehammers.

Ice-T’s friends Al P. and Sean E. Sean went to jail. Al P. was caught and jailed in 1982 for robbing a luxury jewelry store in Laguna Niguel for $2.5 million in jewelry. Sean was arrested not only for possession of cannabis that Sean was selling, but also for possession of material stolen from Ice-T. Sean took the blame and served two years in prison. Ice-T stated that he owes a debt of gratitude to Sean because his prison time allowed him to pursue a career as a rapper. At the same time, he had a car accident and was hospitalized as John Doe because he did not have any identification with him due to his criminal activities. After being discharged from the hospital, he decided to give up the criminal lifestyle and pursue a professional career as a rapper. Two weeks after his discharge from the hospital, he won an open microphone competition judged by Kurtis Blow.

Professional career (since 1982) [ edit ]

pictured) before Ice-T recorded gangsta rap music, Ice-T released a number of electro records including the 1984 single “Reckless” () before recording gangsta rap music

In 1982, Ice-T met Saturn Records producer Willie Strong. In 1983, Strong recorded Ice-T’s first single, “Cold Wind Madness,” aka “The Coldest Rap,” an electro hip-hop record that became an underground success and became popular despite radio stations hearing it due to not playing the song’s hardcore lyrics. That same year, Ice-T released “Body Rock,” another electro hip-hop single that was popular in clubs. In 1984, Ice-T released the single “Killers,” the first of his political raps, and was then a featured rapper on “Reckless,” a single by DJ Chris “The Glove” Taylor and (co-producer) David Storrs. This song was almost immediately followed by a sequel titled “Reckless Rivalry (Combat)” which was included in the Breakin’ sequel, Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo, but was never included on the soundtrack album and has been to this day never published. Ice later recorded the songs “Ya Don’t Quit” and “Dog’n the Wax (Ya Don’t Quit-Part II)” with Unknown DJ, who provided a Run-DMC-like sound for the songs.

Ice-T received further inspiration as an artist from Schoolly D’s gangsta rap single “P.S.K.” What Does It Mean?” he heard at a club. Ice-T enjoyed the single’s sound and performance, as well as its vague references to gang life, although the real gang, Park Side Killers, was not named in the song.

Ice-T decided to adopt Schoolly D’s style, writing the lyrics to his first gangsta rap song “6 in the Mornin'” in his Hollywood apartment and creating a minimal beat with a Roland TR-808. He compared the sound of the song, which was included as the B-side on the single “Dog ‘n The Wax”, to that of the Beastie Boys. The single was released in 1986 and he learned that “6 in the Mornin'” was more popular in clubs than its A-side, prompting Ice-T to rap about Los Angeles gang life, which he did more explicitly than any other rapper described .[citation needed] He intentionally did not represent any particular gang and wore a mix of red and blue clothing and shoes to avoid angering listeners associated with the gang who debated his true affiliation.

Ice-T eventually landed a deal with major label Sire Records. When label founder and president Seymour Stein heard his demo, he said Ice-T sounded like Bob Dylan. Shortly after, he released his debut album Rhyme Pays in 1987, assisted by DJ Evil E, DJ Aladdin and producer Afrika Islam who helped create the mainly party-oriented sound. The record was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. That same year he recorded the theme song for Dennis Hopper’s Colors, a film about gang life in downtown Los Angeles. His next album, Power, was released under his own Rhyme Syndicate label in 1988, and it was a safer and more impressive record, earning him strong reviews and his second gold record. Released in 1989, The Iceberg/Freedom of Speech… Just Watch What You Say! established his popularity by combining excellent aggressive music with narrative and commentary lyrics.[2] That same year he appeared on Hugh Harris’ single “Alice.”[23]

In 1991 he released his album O.G. Original Gangster, considered one of the albums that defined gangsta rap. On OG, he introduced his heavy metal band Body Count in a track of the same name. Ice-T toured with Body Count in the first annual Lollapalooza concert tour in 1991, popularizing him with middle-class teenagers and fans of alternative music genres. The album Body Count was released in March 1992.[2] Ice-T won a Grammy Award for Best Rap for his performance on the highly collaborative track “Back on the Block,” a composition by jazz musician Quincy Jones that “attempts to bring together black musical styles from jazz to soul to funk to rap.” -Performance by a duo or group, an award shared by others who worked on the track, including Jones and colleague Ray Charles.

Controversy later surrounded Body Count over his song “Cop Killer”. The rock song should speak from the point of view of a criminal taking revenge on racist, brutal police officers. Ice-T’s rock song infuriated government officials, the National Rifle Association and various police interest groups. As a result, Time Warner Music refused to release Ice-T’s upcoming album Home Invasion over the “Cop Killer” controversy. Ice-T suggested that the furor over the song was an overreaction, telling journalist Chuck Philips, “…they’ve done movies about nurse killers, teacher killers, student killers. Arnold Schwarzenegger blew away dozens of cops as The Terminator. But I don’t hear anyone complaining about it.” In the same interview, Ice-T Philips suggested that the misunderstanding of Cop Killer, misclassifying it as a rap song (not a rock song), and attempts to censor it had racial undertones: “The Supreme Court says it’s okay for a white man to burn a cross in public, but no one wants a black man to write a record about a cop killer.”[25]

Ice-T amicably parted ways with Sire/Warner Bros. Records after a dispute over the artwork for the Home Invasion album. He then reactivated Rhyme Syndicate and signed a deal with Priority Records for distribution. Priority released Home Invasion in the spring of 1993.[26] The album peaked at #9 on Billboard magazine’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and #14 on the Billboard 200, and spawned several singles including “Gotta Lotta Love”, “I Ain’t New Ta This” and “99 Problems”. ‘ – which later inspired Jay-Z to record a version with new lyrics in 2003. In 2003 he released the single “Beat of Life” with Sandra Nasić, Trigga tha Gambler and DJ Tomekk and placed in the German charts. [28][29]

Ice-T had also collaborated with certain other heavy metal bands during this period. In the episode “Get Schwifty”, “Ice-T” (voiced by show creator Dan Harmon) is portrayed as secretly banished to Earth as alien royalty whose natural form is revealed to be a letter T made of water. Ice-T responded on Twitter by saying, “This is what happens to cartoonists after lots of drugs…. Fn Crazy!!” Stand-up comedian John Mulaney devotes a long segment to the humorous portrayal of Ice-T’s role in the Special Victims Unit in his comedy special New in Town and says his role on the show is to: constantly being surprised by bad things even though he is in a sex crimes unit.[61]

Style and influence[edit]

Ice-T cites writer Iceberg Slim and rapper Schoolly D as influences, with Iceberg Slim’s novels guiding his skills as a lyricist. His favorite heavy rock acts are Edgar Winter, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. His hip-hop albums shaped gangsta rap, with music journalists tracing works by artists like Tupac Shakur, Notorious B.I.G., Eminem and N.W.A back to 6 in the Mornin’.

A love of rock led Ice to use guitar on his albums to add sharpness and power to his songs and to make his raps heavier. He drew on the rock/hip-hop fusion of Rick Rubin-produced acts such as Beastie Boys, Run-DMC, and LL Cool J, which incorporated rock samples into their songs.

Body Count – whose debut 1992 album Ice has been described as “a rock album with a rap mentality” – has been described as pioneering the success of rap-rock fusions by acts like Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit. However, Ice-T states that the band’s style does not merge the two genres and that Body Count is strictly a rock band.

In Hip Hop Connection, Ice listed his favorite rap albums:[63]

On March 20, 1976, Marrow’s high school sweetheart Adrienne gave birth to their daughter, LeTesha Marrow, and they continued to attend high school while raising her. They began a relationship and Ortiz was on the covers of Rhyme Pays and Power. Ice-T and Ortiz gave birth to a son, Ice Tracy Marrow Jr., on November 23, 1991.

The couple renewed their vows on June 4, 2011 to mark their approaching ninth wedding anniversary.[56] As of 2006, they owned a penthouse in North Bergen, New Jersey.[65] In 2012, they built a five-bedroom home in Edgewater, New Jersey, which should be completed by the end of the year.[66] In 2015, the couple had their first child together, a daughter.[67][68]

Er wurde im Booklet zu Fear of a Black Planet als “The Soldier of the Highest Degree” bezeichnet und auf dem Track “Leave This Off Your Fuckin’ Charts” erwähnt. Er arbeitete auch mit dem Anti-Zensur-Kollegen Jello Biafra an seinem Album The Iceberg/Freedom of Speech… Just Watch What You Say!

Soulja-Junge [ bearbeiten ]

Musician Kanye West defended Way saying, “He came from the ‘hood, made his own beats, made up a new saying, new sound and a new dance with one song”.[80]
