Daryl Davis in Orlando: How to convert a Klansman

Musician and lecturer Daryl Davis pulls up an image on his cell phone in which he – a black man – is surrounded by people in white robes and pointy hoods, with a burning cross in the background. It was recorded two weeks ago.

“Here I am at a Klan rally,” he says, as if referring to a backyard barbecue. “Listen, there are people who wear Hawaiian shirts, cop uniforms, judge’s robes that feel just like these people. .. But if we pretend it doesn’t exist, if we sweep it under the rug, it will only fester.” For 35 of his 60 years, Davis has attempted to recruit members of the Ku Klux Klan through a tactic used in these times increasingly rare: friendship.

And he has a collection of donated Klan robes, including one he received in Jacksonville this weekend, indicating his success. As the keynote speaker at Valencia College’s Global Peace Week, Davis is the subject of the 2016 documentary Accental Courtesy: Daryl Davis, Race & America. He will share his message beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the School of Arts and Entertainment in Valencia. Expect it to be provocative.

Conser his perspective on ongoing racial segregation in America and the role of Donald Trump’s White House.

“He’s the best thing that’s happened to this country,” Davis says. “Of course that wasn’t his plan. But as a result of his actions, now we have to open these closet doors, lift this rock and roll back the rug and let all this stuff out and address it. And that’s good.”

But many people who support Davis’ mission don’t respect his methods.

There is a scene in “Accental Courtesy” with members of the Black Lives Matter movement angrily yelling and denouncing Davis. Critics have called him an Uncle Tom. And some say his testimony as a character witness for Richard Preston, a self-confessed white nationalist, resulted in a reduced prison sentence for Preston, who was convicted of firing his gun during last summer’s Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville.

That doesn’t deter Davis. “When two enemies talk,” he likes to say, “they don’t fight.”

The son of US diplomats, Davis spent much of his youth abroad and attended a variety of international schools. It wasn’t until his family returned to the States that he experienced the separate or then newly integrated rooms of his day.

The contrast between an environment of equality and one of discrimination shaped his worldview. But it was an encounter during a 1983 gig at a country western bar in Maryland that defined his path.

“This white gentleman came up to me and sa, ‘I’m really enjoying all of your music,'” Davis says. “I thanked him, shook his hand, and he sa, ‘You know, this is the first time I’ve heard a black guy like Jerry Lee Lewis play the piano.'”

Lewis, of course, borrowed his from black bluesmen and boogie-woogie players, Davis tried to explain. The man in the bar had never heard her, nor had he ever sat down and talked to a black man. He was, Davis soon learned, a card-carrying member of the KKK.

Their unlikely conversation eventually turned into a friendship, and five months later the man presented Davis with his robe — the first of a collection of about 200 robes, of which Davis has kept 46 himself and plans to open a museum.

And he has continued to meet, befriend, debate and try to argue with those whose views he finds abhorrent – despite facing scepticism, criticism, prejudice, threats and occasional violence. He has been labeled both a racial epithet and a racial traitor.

He was physically attacked a few times, he says, but that dn’t stop him.

“Sure, you’re in an awkward environment with people who you might not like, or share your views, or who think you’re inferior to them because of the color of your skin — or because you have a smaller brain than they do, you’re prone to.” crime and welfare and sell drugs,” he says. “You call that cliché, I’ve heard it. But I know who I am. I have no criminal record. I never sold drugs. I have never been dependent on welfare. I have more education than most of them combined.”

Criticism from those who share his skin color will not dissuade him either.

“I’m not saying my way is the only way,” he says. “Of course we know that not everyone will change. There will be those people who will go to their graves.. hateful, racist and violent. But I make little dents here and there. I have the robes to prove it.

Daryl Davis

American musician, author and activist

musical artist

Daryl Davis (born March 26, 1958) is an American R&B and blues musician and activist.[1] His anti-racism efforts, which saw him teaming up with members of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) as an African American, convinced a number of Klansmen to leave and denounce the KKK. Known for his energetic style of boogie-woogie piano,[1] Davis has played with musicians such as Chuck Berry,[1][2] Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King[2] and Bruce Hornsby.[3][4]

He is the subject of the 2016 documentary Accidental Courtesy: Daryl Davis, Race & America.[5][6]

Early life[edit]

Born in Chicago, Illinois, to a State Department official, Davis moved the world with his parents for most of his early childhood. Living in various foreign countries, including African nations, Davis became accustomed to the casually integrated schools of foreign diplomats, where children of many nations, races, and cultures were educated together. At the age of ten he returned to the United States and joined an all-white Boy Scout pack in Belmont, Massachusetts. In one incident, he was carrying the flag and marching with his troop in a local parade when he was hit by rocks and bottles thrown from the crowd, prompting the pack leaders to form a protective ring around him. Davis did not understand the incident until he discussed it with his father. The irrationality of the incident led, according to him, to a curiosity about the origins and basis for such racist attitudes that would later inform much of his future activities.[7][8]

Davis is a Christian.[9]

Music career[edit]

Davis absorbed the style of blues musicians from the Mississippi Delta who had migrated north. In 1980 he earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Howard University, where he was a member of the Howard University Choir and Jazz Vocal Ensemble. Davis “was mentored by legendary pianists Pinetop Perkins and Johnnie Johnson, both of whom claimed him as their godson and praised his ability to master a style of piano that was popular long before he was born,” according to his Kennedy Center profile.[3 ]

Davis has frequently played backup for Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis.[1][2][11][12] He was a friend of Muddy Waters and played piano in The Legendary Blues Band.[12] Davis has also performed with blues icon B.B. King.[2]

The musician has played with artists such as Elvis Presley’s Jordanaires, The Platters, The Drifters, The Coasters, Bo Diddley,[12] Percy Sledge and Sam Moore (of Sam & Dave).[10]

He was named Best Traditional Blues/R&B Instrumentalist at the 2009 Washington Area Music Awards. For several years Davis was artistic director of the Centrum Acoustic Blues Festival.[13]

“Davis’s piano work impresses with its winning combination of technique and dedication, and his singing is strong and assured,” wrote a reviewer in Living Blues Magazine.[14]

Davis holds up KKK robes at Blues and Rock for Humanity in November 2017

What I perceive to be the greatest and most effective and most successful weapon we can use to combat such adversaries as ignorance, racism, hatred and violence is also the cheapest weapon and the one least used by Americans. That weapon is called communication. Daryl Davis, “Klan We Talk?” TEDxCapeMay, January 9, 2018.

Davis has worked to improve race relations by seeking out, speaking to, and befriending members of the Ku Klux Klan. In 1983 he was playing country-western music at a “white” bar in Frederick, Maryland, when a patron approached him and said it was the first time he had “heard a black man play as well as Jerry Lee Lewis”. Davis explained to the man that “Jerry Lee learned to play from black blues and boogie-woogie piano players and he’s a friend of mine”. The white patron was skeptical and over drinks admitted he was a member of the KKK. The two became friends and eventually the man gave Davis contact information for KKK leaders.[15][16][17]

A few years later, Davis decided that he wanted to interview Klan members and write a book on the subject to answer a “question in my head since the age of 10: ‘Why do you hate me when you don’t know anything about me ?’ This question has never been answered since my youth.”[18]

At a meeting with the KKK Imperial Magician in Maryland, Roger Kelly, Davis concealed his race before the interview.

My secretary called him and I told her, “Don’t tell Roger Kelly I’m black. Just tell him I’m writing a book about the Klan. I wanted her to call because she’s white. I knew enough about the Klan mentality that they would never believe a white woman would work for a black man. She called him and he didn’t ask about the color of my skin, so we arranged to meet at a motel.[18]

The meeting was tense. Kelly arrived at the motel with a bodyguard armed with a gun. Davis eventually befriended Kelly and was later invited to be the godfather to Kelly’s daughter. When Kelly left the Klan, he gave Davis his robe.[8]

Davis eventually befriended over twenty members of the KKK[16] and claims to have been directly responsible for between forty and sixty and indirectly over two hundred people leaving the Klan.[19] In the course of his activities, Davis found that Klansmen have many misconceptions about black people, largely stemming from intense brainwashing in their youth. Davis says that once they met him, it was harder to maintain their prejudices. The artist detailed his experiences in his 1998 book Klan-destine Relationships: A Black Man’s Odyssey in the Ku Klux Klan.

One Klansman told Davis that “all black people carry a gene that makes them violent,” based on scientific evidence that a 2-repeat MAOA gene increases the likelihood of violent activity, which is most common in African Americans. [20]

After a while I said, “You know, it’s a fact that all white people carry a gene that makes them serial killers. Name three black serial killers. He couldn’t. I said, “You have the gene. It’s just latent. He said, “Well, that’s stupid.” I said, ‘It’s just as stupid as what you said to me’. After that he was very calm and I know it slowly seeped in.[21][8]

Klan members often invited Davis to meetings and gave him their robes and hoods.[16] In 2016, Davis estimated he had collected 25 or 26 robes. [22]: 1h18m According to The Washington Grand Klaliff, “Knights of the Ku Klux Klan” he interviewed included Chester Doles, Grand Giant Tony LaRicci and Grand Giant Bob White post.[23] A Klan member gave Davis a medallion that read “KKK – Member in good standing.”

Davis claims responsibility for helping to dismantle the KKK in Maryland because things “broke up” after he began gaining a foothold with his membership there.[16][21] Since then, however, the KKK has been rebuilt in Maryland[24] under Richard Preston, leader of the Confederate White Knights, who was arrested for firing his gun at counter-protesters at the 2017 Unite the Right rally.[25] Davis offered to post Preston’s bail.[26] He later took Preston to the National Museum of African American History. Shortly thereafter, he was asked to gift the bride at Preston’s wedding.[27]

“The lesson we’ve learned is that ignorance breeds fear,” says Davis. “If you don’t control that fear, that fear will breed hatred. If you don’t control hatred, it will breed destruction.”[23]

Klan member Chester Doles was convinced Davis was a spy for the Anti-Defamation League or some other Klan buster, and some of Davis’ friends found his fascination with the Klan odd. “He’s drawn to controversy,” says Adolph Wright, an old friend and fellow musician who thinks Davis is a bit eccentric. “If the crowd goes to the right, he goes to the left,” Wright told the Post.[23]

Davis’ father, retired senior Foreign Service official William B. Davis, believed his son became involved with the Klan because he needed to understand their hatred and find common ground. He remarked to the Washington Post that his son “did something I don’t know of any other black or white American.”[23]

Accidental Courtesy Documentary[edit]

In the 2016 documentary Accidental Courtesy: Daryl Davis, Race & America, Davis interacts with KKK members and white Aryans and offers contrasting views of his activities from members of the Southern Poverty Law Center and Black Lives Matter.[28]

Minds social network[ edit ]

Daryl Davis is an official advisor to the decentralized social network Minds.[29][30] He uses the platform to educate people on how to engage in civil discourse to find common ground and build tolerance.[30]

In an interview with Forbes, Davis said, “… here [at Minds] you have an open forum where people are welcome to bring their different ideas, even their beliefs that people may not find popular, and have civil discussions… the Art of conversation lost to each other… This forum will allow people to come there and be transparent to converse unlike some other platforms on the internet.”[31]

Davis believes education is the best antidote to hate: “[When] you eliminate the ignorance, there is nothing to fear. When there’s nothing to fear, there’s nothing to hate. When there is nothing to hate, there is nothing or no one to destroy.” .[32]

In November 2019, Minds and Davis launched the Deradicalization Initiative to counter online extremism.[33][29] In addition to workshops, meetings and other live events, the initiative offers educational resources and ideas to promote tolerance.[34]

Change Minds podcast[edit]

As part of the Deradicalization Initiative, Davis runs a podcast called Changing Minds. The show covers a wide range of topics including politics, music and race. Guests are just as diverse and have notable personalities such as:
