Before you tune in, catch up on the details of the case in the timeline below.

early years

Sabrina A. Zunich was born on October 27, 1994 outside of Cleveland, Ohio to Susan Edwards and Mark Zunich. Both parents struggled with drug and alcohol addictions and had been arrested multiple times, according to a 2013 article in Cleveland Scene magazine.

In her interview with “Snapped: Behind Bars,” Zunich said she was diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder at the age of 4. She also suffered from oppositional defiant disorder, anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder.

Sabrina was largely raised by her grandmother. As a teenager, she attended Wickliffe High School, where she frequently got into fistfights, according to the Cleveland Scene.

When she was 14, Zunich was sent to the Emma Caley Receiving Home, a group home operated by the Children Services Division in Lake County, Ohio. She would spend the next few years being in and out of the foster care system.

July 2011

At age 16, Zunich was placed with Kevin and Lisa Knoefel and moved to their home in Willoughby Hills, Ohio.

Lisa was a social worker in the Cuyahoga County Children and Family Services Division and worked in the Sexual Abuse Division. Kevin was a truck driver. The Knoefels already had two daughters, Megan from Lisa’s first marriage and Hailey, who was born in 2009. Zunich seemed to fit in well with the family and became close with the Knoefels’ children.

December 2011

Despite getting good grades in school, Zunich started playing at home. She quarreled with Lisa, who, in her opinion, treated her own daughters preferentially.

Zunich turned to Kevin and they became unnaturally close. “You were too kind. You were too close. They made sexual jokes with each other,” Zunich’s friend Autumn Pavlik told Snapped: Behind Bars.

March 2012

Zunich told investigators that her relationship with her foster father turned sexual in the spring of 2012. She began massaging Kevin’s inner thighs, then moved on to touching his genitals and finally masturbating him, Cleveland CBS affiliate WOIO reported in 2014.

During the summer and fall of 2012, they began having oral and vaginal sex, according to court documents.

That summer, Kevin and Lisa often argued, and Kevin told friends they could get a divorce.

October 2012

Zunich asked Autumn Pavlik in early October if she knew anyone who would kill her foster mother for her, the Ohio newspaper News-Herald reported in 2014.

“She asked me if I could get her a killer,” Pavlik later testified. “She said that they [Kevin and Lisa] were getting a divorce and that she was worth more dead than alive.”

Lisa had nearly $800,000 worth of life insurance policies, which Kevin Zunich said they could use to build a new life together and raise Hailey.

Kevin contacted Zunich’s social worker earlier this month and said he and Lisa were considering a divorce and asked if Zunich could stay with him if they split, according to court documents.

On October 27, Zunich turned 18, by which time she could have left the foster care system. Instead, she applied to stay in the Knoefels’ home and finish high school.

By this time, however, Lisa had become suspicious of Zunich and Kevin’s relationship. “She wanted me to come out,” Zunich later testified, reported Fox 8 in Cleveland in 2014.

November 15, 2012

In the fall of 2012, Zunich began attending Willoughby South High School. Kevin usually drove her to school, and then they often had sex, according to the News-Herald.

On the morning of November 15, 2012, Kevin parked the car on the way to school and started crying. He said that he and Lisa had a terrible argument the night before and that if Lisa weren’t dead, he would commit suicide.

“I was afraid for him because I fell in love with him,” Zunich later testified. She told Kevin she would kill Lisa herself.

November 16, 2012

Willoughby Hills 911 received a call from 13-year-old Megan, who reported that her sister stabbed her mother. Police officers arrived at the scene to find Zunich still holding the bloodied 15-inch knife.

The authorities found Lisa Knoefel’s body in the parents’ bedroom. 3-year-old Hailey hid in the bedroom closet.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office found that Lisa had been stabbed 178 times in the head, neck, torso and extremities. According to court documents, Lisa had fought back and had many defensive wounds as well as “complex” wounds where the knife had been stabbed and twisted into her body. The attack had been so violent that the knife was bent.

Zunich had suffered several stab wounds himself in the attack and was apparently in shock. She was taken into custody but declined to answer investigators’ questions.

Authorities notified Kevin Knoefel, who was traveling in Michigan. When he got home, officers noted he appeared “relatively calm,” according to court documents, and was more curious than alarmed by the attack.

November 17, 2012

Friends who stopped by to check on the Knoefel family found Kevin odd and distant given the circumstances.

Sometime that day, Kevin visited Zunich at the Lake County Jail and was irritated when told he couldn’t see her, Fox 8 reported in 2014.

Spring 2013

While Zunich was in prison, Kevin collected his dead wife’s insurance money. He paid off his house, bought cars and a house in Florida, and took flying lessons, according to the Cleveland Scene.

Aug 9, 2013

Feeling abandoned by her former lover, Zunich agreed in early August 2013 to cooperate with investigators and testify against Kevin Knoefel for his role in the murder of his wife Lisa.

Kevin, now 43, was charged on August 9 and taken into custody. He was charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated murder and aiding and abetted murder and sexual assault on six counts, the Akron Beacon Journal reported in 2013.

June 11, 2014

The trial of Kevin Knoefel for the murder of Lisa Knoefel began in May 2014, with Sabrina Zurich’s testimony central to the prosecution’s case against him.

After deliberating for nine and a half hours, a jury found him guilty on all eleven counts; Six counts of sexual harassment, three counts of complicity in committing aggravated murder and two counts of conspiracy to commit aggravated murder, Fox 8 reported at the time.

08/06/2014

According to a 2014 Cleveland’s Plain Dealer article, Kevin Knoefel was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole in 30 years. Knoefel will first be paroled in 2043 when he is 73 years old.

September 29, 2014

After pleading guilty to murder in August 2014, Sabrina Zunich was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years, the Associated Press reported at the time. Zunich, now 26, will be eligible for parole for the first time in 2042, when she will be 47.
