No signs of wilting

The Braves have had a day off since June 16. This is usually the time of the season when players are considering having their racquet manufacturer shave some of the grip so the racquets are less difficult to swing. It’s hot too.

Snitker said the Braves (27-8 since June 1) are thriving with nonstop play, not withering.

“I think the best thing that’s happened is probably all of these games that we played back-to-back,” Snitker said. “I really think that helps. We’re in the 30-in-31-day range here. I just realized that when we get something going, it’s because we play every day.

Braves made noise when voting

The All-Star Game fans vote ended Friday night with a Braves player, right fielder Acuna, being chosen as the starter for the July 19 game at Dodger Stadium. But for a club in only the 10th-largest metro population in MLB, and with some of its “stars” having underperforming seasons, the Braves sure made some noise in fan voting.

A shrewd promotion by the team brought the Braves’ train to the summer’s blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick, and millions of votes were cast.

With the game in L.A., the Braves’ marketing department used a Hollywood theme and wrapped up a strategy to get votes for it. Each of the players had a film idea developed for him and a sequel. Trailers were created for each of the films and shown in 70 theaters in Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee prior to the theatrical films. Braves’ marketing department also had billboards placed in the 12 top-grossing theaters in Georgia and Tennessee.

According to the Worldwide Box Office, Tom Cruise’s film grossed $1 billion, and the Braves were in on it.

The tactic worked brilliantly, at least for a while. The Braves had six players who made it through the first round of voting, which ended June 30th. Four finished second, shortstop Dansby Swanson, catcher Travis d’Arnaud, second baseman Ozzie Albies and designated hitter William Contreras. Outfielder Adam Duvall was one of five NL outfielders to make it to the second phase. He only hits .206.

“We were able to get these trailers out and leverage the popular movies like Maverick,” said Adam Zimmerman, senior vice president of marketing and content. “The goal was to get as many players through phase one as possible.”

Albies, who batted .244, might have won at second base had not a broken foot sidelined him since June 13.

Mets are coming to town

First place Mets come (Monday through Wednesday). It will be a series to study contrasts on offense. The power of the Braves (second in the major leagues for home runs, first in slugging) vs. the grind of the Mets (second in on-base percentage, third in batting average). The fans can’t wait.

The Braves expect standing room only Monday night, meaning another sell-off of more than 41,000. $20 general admission tickets only are available Tuesday night. Wednesday is 12:20 p.m. Beginning. We’ll get a look at how jazzed up Atlanta is by this team as the crowd hits 35,000 in Wednesday’s expected heat.

Monday night is Replica Championship Ring Night.
