Pride In His Country
“I believe I’m where I’m supposed to be and doing what I’m supposed to be doing.”
There’s absolutely no mistaking the delta-deep bass voice of “Country” Charley Pride, who will perform at Charlestown Raceway tomorrow night. Country music’s first – and only – black superstar sits on the balcony of his Washington hotel suite, looking down on a gated lobby. The air is dry, dead, and you get the feeling that Charley Pride likes to clean the air around her.
“I’m here voluntarily,” emphasizes Pride. “But people still ask me, ‘How does it feel to be the first black – then Negro – now black entertainer [in country music]?’ Look, I’m in my 19 years of black to black success Negroes went over to blacks. You keep coming back to clichés. This music used to be hillbilly, now it’s country.”
It’s a situation made even clearer by the fact that Pride’s bountiful supply has absolutely no black traits. In fact, someone once pointed out that he sings Hank Williams songs better than Hank Williams does. In any case, Charley Pride is RCA Records’ biggest hit since Elvis Presley, a white man who got his start in music trying to sound black.
“I’m doing the same thing that Jackie Robinson had to do in the world of baseball,” says Pride, 46, whose tall, powerful build is a testament to his own earlier ambitions for a major league career.
Behind the handsome friendliness and familiar toothless smile, he is aware of the social and musical anomaly – sometimes expressed in cries of Uncle Tomism – that exist when a black man performs music for a white audience. But he was rarely drawn into lengthy discussions about color barriers.
“I always thought of myself as an American,” he says.
Charley Pride may be the first black superstar in country music, but he’s not the first black star: harmonica genius Deford Bailey was one of the most popular cast members of the Grand Ole Opry from 1925 to 1941 and the first black country artist to perform recorded a record in Nashville. A young Ray Charles was billed as America’s “Only Colored Singing Cowboy” in the mid-’40s, a full decade and a half before he had crossover hits with Don Gibson’s “I Can’t Stop Loving You” and Harlan Howard’s “Busted.” ”
“I hadn’t heard of Deford Bailey until I went to Nashville, and I happened to be mentioned as the first black man to sing on the Opry since Deford Bailey,” says Pride, who certainly became the first out-and-out traditionalist black superstar . “I realize that uniqueness exists, but once someone meets Charley Pride and sees and understands his background, upbringing and ancestry, he can understand why Charley Pride fits so well into American life.
“I’m African, Caucasian and Indian,” explains Pride, quickly adding that he had few illusions about what he was doing in Sledge, Miss.
“When I used to go to school and pledge allegiance to the flag, all those nice words about ‘liberty and justice for all,’ all I had to do was look out my window: we had to play basketball outside while white people had a gym. I realized they were nice words, but it just wasn’t like that.
“But my mum told me to keep at it, that one day it would be different, and that kept me believing. I’ve always felt sorry for people getting stuck in all those skin color clichés and tropes. I thought of myself like the flag, except red, white and black.
“And I take that approach to everything I do, even when people have come up to me and said, ‘Well, you look like her and you sound like us.’ I understand where they’re coming from, just as I don’t have to ask anyone what it feels like to pick cotton or milk a cow. I was there.”
The son of Mississippi sharecroppers, Pride, and his 10 brothers and sisters picked cotton in Delta farmland and made $3 a 100-pound sack. Pride saved enough money to buy a $10 Sears Silvertone guitar when he was 14. He picked cotton until he was 17. A few years ago he went back and bought the 40 acres his family had farmed more as an emotionally token gesture than an investment.
Not that the latter lacks pride. He owns four radio stations and a cluster of strategic properties in Nashville and his current home in Dallas (where he also owns shares in a major bank). There’s the 22,000-square-foot Nashville office and factory that makes Charley Pride Country Sausages (“about the best strain right now,” he claims).
Then there is the booking agency, the publisher and half a dozen other companies. And the PGA-sanctioned celebrity golf tournament that bears his name. “I currently own three planes,” Pride proudly adds, “but I’m trying to sell two. Do you know anyone who would like to buy two Hadley Jetstreams?”
Casual discussions of multimillion-dollar jets come easy when you’re among the top 15 record sellers of all time “on planet earth,” as Pride cheerfully puts it. “Last time I checked I was number 13.”
He drops numbers: He’s had the most No. 1 singles of any country artist (“30 something”), and “since my third single I’ve never had anything in the top five in my entire career.” The hits just keep coming: “Kiss an Angel Good Morning”, “I Think It’s Gonna Take a Little Longer”, “A Whole Lotta Things to Sing About”, “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone?” and on and on.
He plays to a million people each year in venues ranging from concert halls to county fairs. He recently sold his millionth ticket at the Houston Astrodome after a decade of performing there.
“Nobody’s ever done that,” says Pride, who also has a wife and three children to add to his earnings.
The fascination with country music started early and, perhaps ironically, in the delta heartland of the blues. But Pride recalled growing up in the shadow of an old Philco, listening mostly to The Opry and a local station that programmed Memphis country. My dad was in charge of the dials on the radio, so that’s what we listened to. In my formative years, I listened to country music. I was 10 or 11 years old before I started listening to other music. When I experienced the blues, I was in my teens.”
Black influences on country music reach to its hillbilly roots and beyond. It was African slaves who introduced the banjo to America and black railroad workers who introduced the guitar to the Appalachia region. Yet although country and blues laments are rooted in a common foundation, blacks and whites have maintained equal but separate musical identities. Musical separation is just one facet in a larger scheme of separation, although Pride insists that “there are three ingredients that make American music – country, gospel and blues. All three have borrowed from each other over the years.”
Just as blues and gospel explored different sides of the same experience, country and soul combined in their exploration of parallel working-class experiences. The people who clearly influenced Pride were the fiercely traditionalists – Roy Acuff, Ernest Tubb, Eddy Arnold, Hank Williams – and his style remains firmly rooted in classic country, albeit in a sleek uptown version.
“Slick? That’s an interesting word,” says Pride testily. “I call it progress. People say uptown and slick and cornball and all those things. I’m really glad the Wright brothers invented flying in Kitty Hawk, but when I was getting ready to go to England I just didn’t think the plane would have made it to London.”
One of the few things that would have made Pride happier than him was playing Major League Baseball.
“My dream was to be the greatest baseball player to ever walk down the pike,” he recalls, referring to eight years he spent in organized — and sometimes disorganized — baseball.
Pride, whose hero was Jackie Robinson, was originally signed by the Yankees organization (Pride of the Yankees would have been a title to live up to) and played with the Memphis Red Sox of the Negro American League in the mid-’50s . He eventually had tryouts with the California Angels and New York Mets, but never progressed past the minor leagues.
He was a pitcher, but “I had to play outfield because I was such a good hitter – on both sides.” He played premier e-ball in California and Idaho, but after a two-year Army crisis, Pride saw his dream fade. Eventually he tried his hand at a team in Missoula, Mont.; When he failed his trial, he went to work for a zinc smelter in nearby Helena, playing a little semi-pro ball on the side.
“I’ve had no regrets and all of that,” says Pride (though he still trains with the Texas Rangers every spring training session). “My goal was to go into the major leagues, break records and set new ones at 35, have a jack in the bag, and then go sing. Didn’t work that way.”
Instead, Pride sang with local bands in Montana for five years, entertained one stretcher in the seventh inning at a ballpark, and was rewarded with a standing ovation. In 1963 he was spotted by country entertainers Red Sovine and Red Foley, who convinced Pride to come to Nashville. A year later he was signed to RCA by Chet Atkins and in early 1965 Charley Pride released his first single, “Snakes Crawl at Night”. By 1967 he was on the Opry and his hit streak was beginning to unwind. Charley Pride accepted country music as easily as he had accepted country music.
There was a bit of luck, as Pride showed up just as manager Jack Johnson was looking for a black guy to sing country music.
“He thought it was about time that happened,” says Pride.
Some scouts even tried to convince Pride to adopt a new name – George Washington Carver III – and dress in a colonial costume to sell itself as novelty.
Johnson generated a lot of interest when he started buying Pride’s demo tapes – interest that died down when he showed them a picture of the singer. When the first RCA record came out, Pride’s likeness was noticeably missing from the front and back covers, and no biographical information about him was made available. Pride says, “It was RCA’s decision not to up or down the color thing, just let the voice go, put the record out and let the people decide. That was the bottom line decision.”
It turned out to be a good decision: the country DJs played the records and the fans listened, unaware that “country” Charley Pride was black. By the time it became public knowledge, Pride’s color no longer mattered. “There’s never been a time, not once, where anyone said, ‘Hey Jig!’ or ‘Nigger, get off the stage!’ he says. “Maybe people will let you be what you think you are and I believe I’m Charley Pride, the American who sings American music.”
“People ask what I would have done if I hadn’t been a singer. I probably would have ended up at the smelter in Montana where I worked and I probably would have been a foreman for a while and then probably bought stock, then manager.
“When I was a cotton picker, I was somebody. I didn’t like it, but I tried to hit my father a lot and I was a pretty good cotton picker. I did this until I could do something better. I was a pretty good ironworker up there in Montana. I was a good car washer, washed 400 cars in those old mittens where your hands looked like plums when you come out. I washed 400 cars a day and then loaded clapboards for the rest of the night. People tell you boy you lucky. The harder I worked, the luckier I got. That’s Charley Pride in a nutshell.
