Road Rage, Not Betrayal, Was Behind Informant’s Killing, Authorities Say

When Alpo Martinez was shot and killed in the early hours of Halloween last fall, carrying a driver’s license with a fake name, rumors swirled about who might finally arrive for him. In his decades of Icarian arc, Mr. Martinez amassed an extensive list of enemies – first as a ruthless drug kingpin in the 1980s, and then as a federal informant.

But his death was not a case of long-awaited compensation for his infamous betrayal, a law enforcement official said.

Instead, authorities believe Mr. Martinez was killed because of a street beef, stemming from his passion for dangerous racing on the streets of Harlem on his motorcycle.

How Rich Porter Made A Fortune Selling Crack In 1980s Harlem

Richard “Money Rich” Porter made $ 50,000 a week selling crack in New York City in the late 1980s – until his partner Alpo Martinez killed him in 1990.

For users and innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire, the 1980s crack epidemic was an apocalyptic hellscape. For 25-year-old Rich Porter and his Harlem staff, it’s heaven on Earth. While the New York Police Department considers him a middle-level crack dealer, Porter earns $ 50,000-per week.

Within a few short years, the Harlem native had it all: fancy clothes, women, expensive cars, and street fame. As narrated in the 2002 film Paid In Full, however, Porter’s brilliant lifestyle inevitably caught up with him in 1990. After a rival gang hacked and killed his 12-year-old brother, Porter was killed in the cold blood of a friend.

“Rich lied to me about something for no reason to lie,” Alpo Martinez said. “I gave him the opportunity to tell me the truth not once, but twice. He didn’t die [after my accomplice shot him in the chest] so I shot him in the head. It is not personal. This is business. ”

Rich Porter And Boom Of Crack In New York

Born on July 26, 1965, in New York City, Richard Porter was the eldest of three children lovingly raised by their mother Velma. His sister Patricia was three years younger, while his brother William was born when Porter was a teenager. At that point, Porter had already started hitting crack all over Harlem.

Porter quickly rose through the ranks. Borough acquaintances Alpo Martinez and Azie Faison became fellow dealers, and Porter led a crew of street-level dealers. Because of his income, viewers began calling him “Rich Rich” or “Rich in Money.” By the time she was in her 20s, she owned more than a dozen expensive cars and was rumored to never wear the same dress twice.

Because of economic inequality and lack of opportunity, Rich Porter promised the life of a crack dealer. But most of her free time is spent caring for her mother and siblings, as well as her three children: Reshonia, Rhea, and Donnell.

Everything changed at 4 p.m. on December 5, 1989, when 12-year-old William was still not coming home from school. Velma Porter walked into Public School 92 at 222 West 134th Street itself, hoping to be found on the street-just to let them know she didn’t show up that day, at all. An hour later, he found out why.

“Mommy, they have me,” she cried on the phone. “I don’t know what they want.”

The receiver clicked off, only for another call hours later to scare the 44-year-old mother if she called the police. The anonymous caller demanded $ 500,000 on the third call at 1 a.m. Sadly, the hopeless mother of three was forced to let the man know on the fourth call that she didn’t have that kind of money.

At 3 p.m. on Dec. 6, the caller requested to speak to Rich Porter. The ransom dropped to $ 350,000 but included instructions to visit the local McDonald’s and look under the bathroom sink.

Porter assigned a family friend to do it – who found William’s amputated, two -inch index finger and a warning cassette tape.

The Assassination of Richard Porter

While it remains unclear where he was abducted, William Porter was abducted from one of the four blocks separating his home on 132nd Street and his school. Within 48 hours, evidence that he had been cut was thrown at McDonald’s on the 125th and Broadway. The tape has offensive audio.

“They cut off my finger,” William said in a trembling voice. “Help me. They say if you don’t do what they say they will cut off my hand. Please help. Take the money. I love you mom. Tell Pat I love her. ”

Rich Porter and his family were left in turmoil, listening to sobs before the youth for the rest of the tape. The kidnappers called to repeat their requests at 9 p.m., at which point Porter said he only had $ 200,000 in cash available. While the abductors said they would call him in 10 minutes, they did not.

It was about an hour later that the family finally contacted the police after an argument about the smartest course of action. On Dec. 10, an unknown child delivered a letter to their apartment that simply stated: “We still want the money that the child is hurting and he needs medical attention.”

Sadly this did not happen, as Rich Porter was found loaded with ammunition on January 3, 1990, near Orchard Beach in the Bronx. Locals discovered, he had $ 2,239 in his wallet. He was shot in the head and chest multiple times, while the body of his younger brother was found later that month in a pile of garbage bags.

Rich Porter was killed when Martinez’s suspicions that he cut him off deals turned deadly.Porter became a local legend immortalized by rappers like Jay-Z and 50 Cent. Becoming an informant in exchange for a lower sentence, Martinez was released after 35 years in prison – who was also just killed in the streets on October 31, 2021.
