Qanta A. Ahmed

British-American doctor

Qanta A. Ahmed is a British-American physician who is best known as a specialist in sleep disorders. She has also worked as an author, suffragette, journalist and public commentator.

Life and education[edit]

Ahmed is the daughter of Indian immigrants [2] She grew up in London and graduated from the University of Nottingham. She went to New York City for medical training in 1992. Without a US visa to extend her stay, she went to Saudi Arabia for a year to practice medicine. She wrote down her daily experiences as a practicing doctor and published them in a book. In June 2013, Ahmed visited Israel and spoke at universities and research institutes across the country.[3] Ahmed became a US citizen in 2015 but retained her British citizenship. She currently resides in New York City.[4][5]

Medical career[edit]

Ahmed practiced medicine in the National Guard Health Affairs in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. She returned to the United States in 1996 and practiced sleep medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina and at the Winthrop University Sleep Disorders Center in Garden City.[6]

As of 2011, Ahmed was an Associate Professor of Medicine at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook.[7][8] She was also an honorary professor at Glasgow Caledonian University’s School of Health and Life Sciences in Scotland and an honorary fellow at the Technion-Israel Institute of Science and Technology in Haifa, Israel.[5] In 2014, she was appointed media spokesperson for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.[5]

Literary and journalistic career

Ahmed is the author of In the Land of Invisible Women, an account of her experiences as a doctor in Saudi Arabia.[9][10][11]

Ahmed has also worked as a public commentator, writing on subjects such as medicine, politics, feminism, Islam and current affairs. She has also written articles for The Spectator, Huffington Post, The New York Post, The Daily Caller, USA Today, The Guardian, The Jerusalem Post, and The Daily Telegraph. She has also worked as a media analyst for Al-Jazeera, CNN and Fox News.[5]

Views on Islam and Islamism[edit]

Ahmed is a practicing Muslim but is critical of elements of Islam, the treatment of women in some contemporary Islamic societies, and the ideology of Islamism. She explains that Islamists reject the liberal teachings of Islam and seek to impose a more sectarian belief on others through violence, exploitation of democracy and manipulation of non-Muslims who mistakenly ally themselves with Islamic extremists. A self-identified feminist, Ahmed has also denounced radical Islam (particularly violent jihadism and anti-Semitism) and has been described by the media as a Muslim reformist.[12]

Ahmed explained that she formed many of her views after being denied a visa extension in the US after completing her medical training and, due to difficulties staying in America, accepted a job offer in Saudi Arabia “on a whim”. assumed. She hoped that being a Muslim would allow her to feel more accepted in Saudi society and explore her religious heritage, but due to her status as a woman she was quickly relegated to second-class medicine and disregarded or treated as inferior by subordinates below her. She claimed that while she was impressed by her Saudi colleagues’ commitment to her faith, she also felt oppressed by the public veil laws and was shocked by the social ostracism, racism and anti-Semitism she witnessed, as well as the unsound medical practices promoted as a result of Saudi Arabia’s governance under strict Islamic laws.[13][14][15]

In her commentary, Ahmed has argued that “Islamists exploit democratic institutions to further their sectarian ends” and that “exposing Islamists as dangerous totalitarians is not an act of anti-Muslim bigotry, but a vital defense of both liberal democracy and Islam.” Ahmed has cited the regime of Mohamed Morsi in Egypt as an example that Islamists come to power and that not all Islamists are violent but use many different means to assert themselves.[16]

Ahmed has urged the US State Department to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organization. She stated: “By promoting separatism and indoctrinating its members in the totalitarian tenets of 20th-century Islamism, the Muslim Brotherhood seeks to upset the fabric of democracy.”[16]

In 2018, she defended Boris Johnson over his comments on the burqa and niqab. She stated: “I fully support Boris Johnson’s rejection of the niqab. And I wonder how many of the former Foreign Secretary’s critics understand my religion, what that form of dress represents and what submission it implies.”[17]

In 2019, Ahmed criticized US Congressman Ilhan Omar for her comments on the 9/11 attacks, in which Omar commented, “CAIR was formed after 9/11 because they realized that some people did something and that we all are gradually losing access to our civil liberties.” Ahmed described Omar’s statement as an insult to both Muslims and the victims of 9/11. She also disputed the factual accuracy of Omar’s claim about the founding of CAIR, disputed her claim that Muslims in the United States had faced government-sponsored discrimination, and concluded by stating, “Omar should be honest. 9/11 didn’t happen.” simply committed by some people, but Islamist jihadists were responsible and they came from the Muslim herd.”[18]

Ahmed has also criticized the term “Islamophobia”, arguing that it has become a “shield for jihadists” and that the term should not be used in hate crime legislation in Western societies as it allows Islamists to exploit it. Discussing physical and verbal attacks on Muslims such as the Christchurch Mosque attack and comments from Australian Senator Fraser Anning, Ahmed said: “This type of bigotry is not difficult to recognize or to condemn. Nor does it require a new law. All of this is important because while we are getting better and better at thwarting terrorist attacks, we still struggle against their ideological underpinnings. As a secular pluralistic democracy, we have weapons: intellectual vision, critical thinking and, most importantly, insight into the language of this war dominate ideas. And to use the word Islamophobia when talking about anti-Muslim xenophobia is to use the vocabulary and adopt the rule book of the Islamists who want to cover up their intentions.”[17]

Views on Israel[ edit ]

Ahmed opposes boycotts against Israel and has described the BDS movement as an attempt to defame Israel.[3] Although Ahmed has opposed the occupation of the Palestinian territories, she has also stated that handing them over would mean surrendering the territories to “virulent jihadist ideology” and leaders who call for Israel’s destruction.[3] In 2010, Qanta described herself as an “accidental Zionist” and that “Eretz Yisrael is a vital sanctuary, a single sanctuary from deadly, genocidal anti-Semitism… If we care at all about the wider humanity, we all must and want to be ‘accidental’ Zionists.” for the Jews, for the Israelis, what every Muslim already has for himself: a future, a nation, and a faith secured.”[19]
