When did Emily climb El Captain?

In November 2020, just after the end of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

Alex Honnold’s net worth

He is best known for his professional rock climbing. While there are many great climbers in the industry, he is the only one to have free soloed El Capitan to date. Among his peers, he is considered one of the top climbers in the world.

Alex Honnold’s early life

Honnold was born in Sacramento, California in 1985. He comes from Polish-German parents who have nurtured his love of climbing since he was five years old. As a teenager, he continued to hone his skills and even competed in climbing competitions, often winning.

Alex Honnold’s education

Alex attended Mira Loma High in California. After graduating high school in 2003, he enrolled at the University of California at Berkeley. He studied engineering but got off to a rocky start in his first year. When he took some time off to prepare for the upcoming national climbing championships in Scotland, he decided not to pursue further studies.

How did Alex Honnold build his fortune?

Alex Honnold is worth just over $2 million – which is impressive for someone in the sport of climbing.

His average annual income is approximately $200,000 per year. The average rock climber only makes about $15,000 a year from the sport alone. Those who are at the top of their game can earn up to $300,000 a year.

Alex saves a lot by living modestly and also being on the road most of the year. He has a militant personality that can also help build wealth. He has an impressive string of climbs in 2007, from Yosemite Salathe Wall to California’s Green Mile in 2010. Alex also scaled the Yosemite Triple Crown in 2012 and Torre Traverse in Patagonia in 2016, among many others in between. His most recent and most notable ascent is the one that shot him to further fame; first person to free solo El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.

Most of his income comes from his appearances in documentaries, winning prizes in professional climbing competitions and, of course, sponsorship money.

Alex Honnold’s productivity habits

Being a world-class climber takes motivation and dedication. His daily routine starts early every day and builds on a lot of exercise.

For Alex Honnold, he not only has to motivate himself to succeed, but also conquer his fear of free climbing. As shy as he is in social situations when it comes to free soloing verticals, he’s found a way to embrace fear and use it to his advantage.

Fear gives him the energy to keep climbing while also bringing his moves into laser focus. The best way to apply these feelings is to actually listen to them and allow them to guide your next move.

How rich is Alex Honnold?

Alex Honnold has made a net worth of $2 million through professional rock climbing over the past few years.

How Much Does a Professional Climber Make With 4 Examples! – Ascentionism

With rock climbing’s recent explosion in popularity, many people are looking for a career in the sport. I’ve put together the guide below to show just how viable a career can be!

So how much does a professional rock climber make? The best professional rock climbers can make up to $300,000 a year, although most make less than $10,000 a year.

The salary range of professional climbers varies greatly. From big names like Alex Honnold to small, almost unknown climbers who do it for the love of the sport, there is a wide range of salaries that they earn. When you’re among the best in the world, you can enjoy a pretty comfortable lifestyle: Athletes like Tommy Caldwell make six figures a year through sponsorships and various other revenue streams. However, the majority of professionals thrive on low wages.

How Much Do Professional Climbers Earn?

To show how much a professional climber can make, I’ve broken athletes into four categories: celebrities, stealth destroyers, climbers, and influencers. Celebrities make the most at $300,000, while influencers make ends meet at around $6,000.

These athletes have different skills, fame, and sources of income due to their different salaries, and we’ll break them down to get a better look at their earnings.

First, however, it is important to define “professional”. According to a quick Google search, a professional is someone who “pursues a particular activity as a main occupation rather than a pastime”.

So, for this article, I’m just going to take it to mean that someone invests time and effort to get paid for their climbing. These efforts can include training to crush harder, emailing companies for sponsorships, or working on your social media presence — anything counts.

Let’s dive into our four categories!

Top class: the celebrities

Who are they: The world’s best climbers, who have had long, comfortable careers in the sport. They’re not millionaires, but money isn’t usually an issue.

How much do you earn? Salaries can vary but typically range from $100,000 to $300,000.

Examples: Alex Honnold, Tommy Caldwell, Adam Ondra, Emily Harrington, Lynn Hill, Chris Sharma

First up are the celebrities – the world’s best rock climbers who have been climbing professionally for years, sometimes even decades, and amassed a lot of money doing it.

These are the people recognizable to everyone in the climbing gym and probably some members of the general public. They earn six-figure incomes over long periods of time, so they can live fairly comfortably (not to mention most of their trips, which are often sponsored).

However, to fit into this category you have to be the best of the best of the best – the true 0.001%. If you’re not quite as good you might have some other skills (like Jimmy Chin who’s a really good climber but an amazing photographer) but I wouldn’t count on that.

So, unless you’re driving 5.13s as a 12-year-old, I wouldn’t count on getting rich. These guys are real talent that you only get once in a generation and that’s why they get paid the big bucks.

Mid-Tier: The Careers

Who are they: Lifelong climbers who, while not well known, are good enough to make a respectable income from the sport.

How much do you earn? $50,000 to $100,000

Examples: Jonathan Siegrist, Sebastien Bouin, Brooke Raboutou, Cedar Wright, Ashima Shiraishi

The careers are recognizable to those who follow the sport, they are hardcore breakers who narrowly fail to be the best in the world. Even if their accomplishments aren’t as newsworthy as the celebrities’ – like climbing the Dawn Wall or free-soloing El Cap – you can still see these guys cruising 5.15s or competing for the Olympics to qualify.

Careers are people who love the sport and, while unlikely to ever get rich, can make a comfortable living as a professional climber. They make about the median income and can travel, train and spend every day doing the sport they love (at least in theory).

If you dream of becoming a professional rock climber, a career is probably as high as you can realistically achieve. Even for that you need to be insanely good (take Siegrist as an example – he smashes), and there’s no guarantee you’ll ever really “get it”.

Low Level: The Fringers

Who are they: The scumbags and dream hunters are people who can make a living at rock climbing, but will probably always be a bit worried about money.

How much do you earn? $20,000 to $50,000

Examples: Matt Bush, Will Stanhope, Ben Hanna, the late but great Brad Gobright

For the true hardcore climber, this is where most pros fall – able to make a living but not exactly what you would call financially stable.

If you’re a purist, you might mistake these guys for the real climbers. They don’t do it for money or fame (because they don’t really have either), but for love, which drives them to climb, even if it seems ridiculous.

Fringers absolutely need to “make it work”. These guys don’t drive around in brand new Sprinter vans or convert their garages into massive training facilities. Think about crashing at your parents’ house, sleeping in the back of a minivan, and patching the same baggy jacket 8 times so you don’t have to use your groceries to buy a new one.

I’m exaggerating a bit – many people get by on less than $50,000 a year – but the hard truth is that most professional climbers are pretty tight on cash. If you’re a good climber and willing to put in the effort, you can probably make it to this income level, but be warned: it’s not always easy to climb to the career level here.

Bottom level: The dirt bags

Who are they: Those who don’t have the crowd, the climbing skills, or just the desire for wider recognition/sponsorship, this group climbs a lot more than they give out.

How much do you earn? > $10,000 per year

Examples: The majority of professional climbers

You’ll notice that I haven’t listed any specific names for this category, and you may be wondering why. The answer is simple: you wouldn’t have heard from them if I had.

As exasperating as it may be for anyone who dreams of becoming a professional rock climber, the fact is that most of them make less than $10,000 a year (to be precise, 58% of professional climbers make less than $5,000 a year, according to Rock and Ice).

In reality, most people just aren’t good enough to be professional climbers. Add to that the fact that a lot of people would love to do it, and so you get a large influx of people who can’t really differentiate themselves. This leads to many 5.14 crushers not having found their niche (or reliable income).

If you want to become a professional rock climber, you need to be prepared for that possibility: low income, little recognition, and hours spent getting your name out there. You’ll likely have to take on side jobs to make ends meet, and that will take away your ability to climb as much as you like.

Do it for the love of the sport, sure, but if you dream of turning pro, don’t be fooled by pictures from Alex Honnold’s van from Chris Sharma’s House of Video Tours. You’re much more likely to end up here than there.

How much does Alex Honnold earn per year?

When you think of professional climbers now, one name probably springs to mind: Alex Honnold.

So how much money does Alex Honnold make? Alex Honnold makes around $200,000 a year, although he likely made more from releasing Free Solo.

Specific contract details aren’t available, but if you do some digging, you can glean information about Honnold’s financial history. He says he donates about a third of his income to his foundation (The Honnold Foundation) and has stated that the average donation is around US$50,000; A few quick calculations will give you an annual salary of $150,000.

However, that has increased in recent years as Honnold’s fame has grown. In 2017, he said the donation was $80,000, which would bring his total salary to $240,000. At other times, Honnold said he was as wealthy as “a moderately successful dentist,” which would fit that range.

How do professional climbers make money?

You’re not the only one wondering how these guys get paid. It seems a little ridiculous — who spends $250,000 a year just so Honnold can climb some rocks?

I’ve written a whole article on the specifics of this question, but it basically boils down to this: Most of the money will come from sponsorships. Companies like Black Diamond, Patagonia, and The North Face pay athletes to wear their gear while climbing so their gear is associated with breakers.

Additionally, in the age of social media, it’s not uncommon for people to use other avenues (like Instagram) to promote brands.
