biography

British rider Izzy Taylor (38) from near Bicester in Oxfordshire first competed here in 2011. On her last visit in 2019, she scored another deal. With this year’s entry Artful Trinity, she finished 15th at Pau 5* in 2020 – the horse first at the level when he was 9 years old. Izzy is one of the UK’s busiest drivers – she was 5th in the BE rankings at the end of 2021.

Izzy comes from a family of riders and started riding horses at an early age. Her grandmother Jane Whiteley finished second in badminton, her great aunt Anneli Drummond Hay won both badminton and Burghley and her mother represented GB in the juniors and young riders. Despite being offered a place to study physical education at university, Izzy chose horses and eventing. She initially worked for Hartpury College and breeders Sam and Linda Barr and then spent some time in Holland training with her aunt Anneli Drummond Hay where she had the opportunity to work for Swiss Olympic show jumper Markus Fuchs. She recovered from a serious fall injury in 2003 and won team silver and individual bronze at the 2004 European Championships for Young Riders. She was then stationed at Opposition Stud for two years, during which time she was second at Windsor International and third at the Young Rider Championships. In 2006, Izzy set up her own farm.

In 2008, Izzy was riding Briarland’s Matilda when her former rider, Tristram Owers, broke his leg. In 2011 Izzy made her badminton debut with Matilda and in 2012 finished seventh in her first Burghley appearance – Izzy took the top-placed ‘Burghley First-timer’ award while Matilda won the top-placed British Mare award. In 2013 she was a member of the UK squad for the European Championships in Malmo with Matilda – Izzy’s first appearance as a senior for GB.

In 2014 she was the only rider to complete two-horse badminton, Briarlands Matilda 17th & Thistledown Popski 18th. In 2015, with Briarlands Matilda, she was an individual member of the squad that competed in the European Championships at Blair Castle, finishing 6th. In 2016, at the Goodwood Festival’s July meeting, Izzy won the Magnolia Cup – a prominent women’s charity race – presented to her by Darcy Bussell. In 2017 she won the CCI3* in Millstreet with Perfect Stranger. She was also the winner of the World Championships for 6-year-old young horses (Monkeying Around) and won 7 CIC3* classes during the year including Belton and Bramham. In 2016 she finished eighth in badminton with Allercombe Ellie. The pair were selected for the British team for the Rio Olympics but were unable to compete shortly before the trip due to an injury to Ellie.

Izzy is the mother of two children, Lily (13) and Freddie (11) and enjoys hunting with the Bicester and Waddon Chase.

Oliver Townend, British event rider and Olympic gold medallist

One of Britain’s leading event riders, Oliver Townend has represented his country on a number of occasions, winning at five-star level. He was a member of the British Olympic eventing team at the Tokyo Games in the Ballaghmor class and came home with a team gold medal.

Oliver is world number one and was the leading rider by British eventing points for six of the nine years 2011-2020.

Oliver, who is originally from Yorkshire but now lives in Shropshire, started riding as a child and rode Cool Mule on the European pony eventing team, with whom he also competed at the Horse of the Year Show.

Oliver gained experience as stable jockey for Kenneth Clawson, the late British eventing team show jumping trainer, for three years before setting up his own stable in Leicestershire.

As well as being very talented, Oliver is known as a grafter who worked his way up in the sport rather than coming from a wealthy background.

“When I was 22, if there was an event that I had a horse that could possibly finish, I would have done anything to make him competitive,” he said in a 2014 interview.

“I drove to events knowing I didn’t have the money to put diesel in the car to get home. I would exchange prize checks with the entry lady for entry fees so I would have cash for diesel. Then you have to win.”

Early in his career Oliver was known for handling large numbers of horses and getting results with less talented horses, but in recent years he has taken a step back and focused more on quality over quantity.

Where is Oliver Townend based?

Oliver bought his farm near Ellesmere, Shropshire when he was 25 and made the money to own a property from a young age mainly through successful horse trading – for example he sold Land Vision, which started with Mark in 2011 Badminton won Todd.

When he saw the advertisement for the farm, he drove straight there in a groom’s “bagged old” Vauxhall Corsa, as his sponsored Land Rover was parked in the garage.

He laughs: “They must have thought: ‘What a waste of time’ – a 25-year-old in a rusty car, first-time buyer.”

What medals has Oliver Townend won?

Oliver made his senior British Championships debut in 2005 when he rode topping at the Blenheim European Eventing Championships as an individual rider.

Since then he has won four European team medals. At the 2007 European Championships in Pratoni del Vivaro, Italy, and at the 2009 European Championships in Fontainebleau, France, he took team gold on Flint Curtis. He added another team gold to his collection on Cooley SRS at the 2017 European Championships in Strzegom, Poland. His most recent European medal is team silver at the 2019 European Championships in Luhmühlen, Germany in the Cooley Master Class.

Oliver won team gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 with the Ballaghmor class.

Oliver has ridden as an individual rider at two World Equestrian Games (WEG) and was 11th at the WEG 2006 in Aachen, Germany, on Flint Curtis. His other WEG appearance was on Black Tie at the 2014 Games in Caen, France.

How many five stars has Oliver Townend won?

Oliver has won five stars six times.

He won Badminton Horse Trials 2009 on Flint Curtis and Burghley Horse Trials 2009 on Carousel Quest and 2017 on Ballaghmor Class.

He has also won the U.S. Five-Star race at the Kentucky Three-Day Event three times, earning back-to-back Cooley Master Class wins in 2018 and 2019 and a Ballaghmor Class win in 2021.
