Chris Carmack & Erin Slaver Release ‘The Risk’ as Life On Eris

Many people have fond memories of the Nashville TV show, but none walked away from that experience with more than Chris Carmack and Erin Slaver. They met and fell in love while filming the show, and their time on the drama set the stage for the couple’s latest creative endeavor as the duo Life on Eris. Their new single “The Risk” is out today (February 26) and sees the couple returning to their country roots.

Carmack, who portrayed Will Lexington on the show, and Slaver, an accomplished musician who also worked on the show, met on set and married in 2018. “I was just a background musician. I started the pilot of this show and couldn’t believe how down to earth the actors were,” Slaver tells Sounds Like Nashville during a lively Zoom call with Carmack. “They have been so kind and hospitable to us as musicians. It’s like they really want to know what the world we live in is like.”

“I remember the first time I saw Erin, she was in Sam’s band,” he says of Sam Palladio, who portrayed Gunnar Scott. “She stepped forward into the spotlight and played a violin solo. She had a big magnetic smile on her face and lit up the whole room. It was a moment that made the entire audience fall in love with her, but only one of us got to keep her.”

The couple now lives in Los Angeles with their four-year-old daughter Kai. Carmack is currently known as Dr. Atticus Lincoln to star in Grey’s Anatomy, which begins a new season on March 11th. The couple have also been writing and producing new music during the pandemic. Last fall they released Stonewall, a five-song EP with finely crafted alternative-pop melodies.

Her new single “The Risk” moves in other tonal areas. “We really just sort of gravitate back to what’s natural to us,” notes Slaver. “We are both instrumentalists. I was a violinist and violinist by training, so when we sit down to write we always write acoustically with our instruments, guitar, violin, piano. We really love to play anything and we find that we shine the most when we play our own instruments. We like the production. We like programming and stuff like that, but we’re really at our best with our acoustic instruments. Also, we’ve spent so much time in Nashville. I lived there for 10 years. He was there for almost 10 years. Our songwriting is so influenced by the countless nights we’ve spent in the clubs listening to the songwriters in the Bluebird, the listening room. We’ve been to everyone.”

The couple not only write all of their songs, but also play all of the instruments. “Stonewall was our first EP and we produced it ourselves,” says Carmack. “Sometimes when you start doing it yourself, you dig really deep. So we got a Moog synth and started having really fun going down that rabbit hole, but in a way it was a bit of a swim for us because we’re writing in a kind of Writer’s Room Nashville style. We try to keep it very personal and tell personal stories. We don’t write for another artist. We write for ourselves, so it has to be personal, but lately when we’re writing we’re like, ‘Let’s just record it like we’re doing it right now. Let’s just shoot from the hip a little more.” Maybe one day we’ll dig deeper and dive for sounds again, but I think for now we’re having a lot of fun playing the songs and the style that we are used to play. This feels like a song I could have taken with the Nashville line-up on tour and performed to that big country crowd. There’s something very nice about it for me, out of nostalgia, because even when we were rehearsing it, I was imagining it would be one of those Nashville tours as Will Lexington.”

As songwriters and musicians, Carmack and Slaver bring their own unique experiences to Life on Eris. Born in Washington D.C. and growing up in Maryland, Carmack began making music at a young age. He has worked extensively in film, television and as a model, but Nashville gave him a chance to return to his first love – music. He has toured with the Nashville cast and appeared on the albums released by the show. Slaver began classical violin training at the age of three and continued to hone her skills at a music conservatory. She has worked as a backing vocalist and violinist with a variety of major acts. She has appeared on several studio albums with JD & The Straight Shot and has toured extensively, performing for such iconic acts as The Eagles, The Doobie Brothers, Chicago, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Don Henley and Jewel.

“I feel like we find ourselves as a couple when we write together, and I think we might find our happy place more in the country world,” says Slaver. “The songs we wrote for the Stonewall EP were very much about conflict in relationships. We did that and worked things through. It was like therapy for us. Another thing is that we’ve been in this pandemic for a year now and we’re like, ‘We need lighthearted, happy songs to be a part of what we’re doing.’ So that was part of it.”

“The Risk” is the first song from the new EP the duo is working on. “We made a very conscious effort to write something a little more ambitious and positive,” says Carmack. “We’ve spent a lot of time laying on the ground during this pandemic and we wanted to do something that would lift our spirits and some of the fans who were kind enough to hear our music. We wanted to give that something a little more upbeat that maybe they could smile about.”

With their warm, evocative vocals and insightful songwriting, Carmack and Slaver carve out a unique place in the music community that it only seems fitting that they adopt a distinctive nickname. When asked to explain the origins of Life on Eris, the duo traces it back to a few different things. “I’m working on Grey’s Anatomy now and was quickly indoctrinated into the world of shipping, where they take two names and put them together. Right now, I’m Link and I’m dating Amelia, so we’re Amelink,” Carmack explains of his TV character. “So we joked about [that] Erin and Chris would get together, Eris would be our ship name and … we wrote all these songs about arguments and discord and the difficulties of being in a relationship. Then we read Kai a children’s book about astronomy and there was a dwarf planet in the solar system that I had never heard of called Eris, of course named after the goddess of strife and discord. We said, ‘Man, that’s where we live! We live on this planet. We live on Eris. And then we realized that’s the name!”

Both admit trying to manage the pandemic has been stressful. “We live in Los Angeles. She moved here for the first time. We’re in the middle of a pandemic,” says Carmack. “She doesn’t know anyone, can’t get to know anyone. There is no social life. There’s no such thing as nothing, so I think we really looked for something that was more familiar to us, which was the sounds of the music we were creating.”

“We’re homesick,” Slaver says of missing Nashville. “There’s just something to it. I know it’s growing every day and has gotten so much bigger, but the small town feel is so real in Nashville. When we come back it just feels so good. It feels like you are so supported in the community. It’s our home. I gave birth to my child there. We got married there. It is something very special for us.”

Carmack totally agrees. “We love Nashville,” he smiles. “I don’t know if in the current situation [due to the COVID-19 restrictions] we could use it now, but what I miss the most is the live music. We would look at as much as possible. Of course we have a kid now, but before we had a kid we would go out three or four times a week to listen to live music – people we knew and people passing through town, big shows, small ones Shows, so many of them music venues. When you live in LA and elsewhere for a long time, you start to appreciate the fact that these music venues [in Nashville] not only have fantastic musicians, but they also have good sound engineers and equipment to bring the sound to the room. I miss all those great sounding rooms and all those great musicians and songwriting.”

Carmack and Slaver hope listeners will reconnect with the honesty and vulnerability in Life on Eris’ songs, and they’re not shy about being transparent on social media either. “From day one, we wanted Life on Eris to talk about our lives and the truth about it, not sugarcoat it or pretend that we’re these perfect people in this perfect marriage in this perfect life,” he says. “Let’s talk about what’s really going on, and because we’re so personal with the message of the music, it feels very appropriate to also be personal with some of the posts and some of the things that we put out, because otherwise it’s nobody does write our songs for us. We don’t create a character that we portray. This is us and it’s intimate.”
