In each episode, four bladesmiths compete in a three-round elimination contest to forge bladed weapons, with the overall winner receiving $10,000 and the show’s Forged in Fire Champion title. The series has a host (formerly Wil Willis for the first seven seasons, currently hosted by Grady Powell) and a panel of three judges consisting of J. Neilson (Jason Knight during portions of seasons 3 and 4; Ben Abbott during portions of the season 4). , 5th, 6th and remaining in Season 7), David Baker and Doug Marcaida: Experts in Weapons Manufacturing, History and Use.
The History channel initially ordered eight episodes of the series [1], with the first show airing Monday, June 22, 2015 at 10 p.m. ET. [2] [3] The second season premiered on February 16, 2016 and increased to 10 episodes.[4] The third season premiered on August 23, 2016 with a “Champion of Champions” match and was announced to have 16 episodes. The fourth season premiered on April 11, 2017 with a “Judges’ Pick” episode in which the four judges (Neilson, Knight, Baker, Marcaida) each chose a blacksmith from past seasons to compete again. The fifth season premiered on March 7, 2018. The sixth season premiered on February 6, 2019. The seventh season premiered on October 9, 2019 and was extended to May 6, 2020. The eighth season premiered on November 18, 2020.

Dubbed ‘The Forge’, the set is equipped with a wide range of metalworking equipment including propane forges, coal forges, grinders, electric hammers and hydraulic presses. Medical personnel are on hand to treat injuries or other health issues and may, at their discretion, disqualify Blacksmiths who are unable to proceed safely. At the end of each round, the blacksmith whose weapon is the least satisfying must give it up and leave the competition.
In a typical episode, the four smiths are presented with a quantity of steel to use in the first round to forge a blade in a style of their choosing. In some episodes they all start with the same source material; in others, they can choose from a selection of metal objects, or must salvage their material from a source such as a junk car or a lawnmower. The host provides one set of criteria related to blade or blade/tang length, and often a second set for a feature that needs to be incorporated, such as a blade. B. spikes or a fuller groove. The smiths have 10 minutes to sketch their designs, followed by three hours to forge the blades; they don’t have to stick to their original designs. Once time is up, the judges will rate the blades based on the host’s criteria and inspect their craftsmanship, quality and design, then deliberate privately before announcing their decision. Any smiths that don’t meet the criteria or don’t turn in a blade at all are eliminated immediately.
For the second round, the three remaining blacksmiths have an additional two (originally three) hours to turn their blades into fully functional weapons. You must attach a handle, choose from a range of materials provided, and incorporate any additional special features specified by the host. They are also required to grind, sharpen and polish the blades and can address any faults or issues that the judges point out in the first round if they wish. After the time has elapsed, the judges put each weapon through a series of tests to assess characteristics such as sharpness, durability and ease of use. In these tests, the weapons are used to chop/cut/stab objects such as rope, blocks of ice, animal bones/cadavers, and metal pipes. If a weapon suffers catastrophic failure, defined as damage that renders it unsafe or unsuitable for further testing, its manufacturer is immediately disqualified. In the event of a catastrophic failure of multiple weapons, the worst player will be eliminated. Judges, in their sole discretion, may decide not to submit a weapon to a particular test if it has sufficient cracks or defects.
In the third round, the two remaining blacksmiths are shown a historically significant (and technically difficult) weapon, largely made by David Baker, [6] and given four (originally five) days to create a version of it. Returning to their home forges for work, they must abide by all of the host’s specifications. Afterward, they return to the Forge and submit their weapons for testing against objects and environments resembling the historical scenarios in which they were typically used. Based on the test results, the judges will select a blacksmith to receive the $10,000 prize and champion title of the day.

His catchphrase is the declaration of a worthy weapon: “It will KEAL.” He also tests the sharpness of the weapon and, if found worthy, is given the declaration “It will cut”.

Ben Abbott, a nine-time Forged in Fire champion as of February 2022, made his debut as a judge beginning in the 21st episode of season four. Abbott would replace Neilson in a few episodes after Season 5 and would replace Baker when Baker competes in the final round in Super Champion Edition (Season 7) and Beat the Judges episodes. In Season 8, Ben faced off against multiple opponents in a five-part Beat the Unbeaten series. He went undefeated, taking his record at the Forge to 9-0.

Tim Healy and Steve Ascher are executive producers of History.[1][7] Jodi Flynn, Brent Montgomery, David George, Shawn Witt and Simon Thomas are executive producers for Outpost Entertainment.[1][7] Healy watched the demonstration and later filming from the sidelines. Healy says the inspiration for Forged in Fire came from his and other developers’ love for food competition shows like Chopped and Iron Chef.[3] However, to appeal to the history channel’s audience, they decided to focus the competition on historical weapons.[3]

Typically, Forged in Fire episode candidates go through a casting call and screening process before appearing and competing on the show. For example, on October 18, 2021, Doug Marcaida shared a casting call on his Facebook page with a search for “…metalworkers to forge iconic edged weapons from history!”[11] After applying for the show, the potential competitors are interviewed via video and phone; asked questions about their metallurgical knowledge, experience and skills; and undergo background checks. Sometimes contestants are asked to build a weapon to specific specifications, with progress pictures being sent to the show’s producers and analyzed by them before being considered for participation in an episode.
Occasionally, former contestants are invited back to the show to compete in another competition. For example, bladesmiths have reappeared and competed in a branch military tournament, the Second Chance Tournament, or a broken blade episode of Revenge, to name a few.

Forged in Fire episodes are filmed in a safe, professional environment at Brooklyn Fireproof Stages in Brooklyn, New York City, New York.[13]
The set consists of a large judges table from which the judges watch throughout the episode, 3 or 4 main work tables for the contestants, large shelving units called the “pantry” for various handle materials and large quantities of different metal types, grades, sources and forms. The rest of the set floor is spotted with other workstations for tools and equipment such as venturi forges (made and supplied by Majestic Forge[14]), a variety of hammers, steel files, wire brushes, anvils, foot operated electric hammers, hydraulic presses, electric buffer wheels , grinding wheels, vices, welders and other hand and power tools.[15] Safety gear is also found throughout the set and is used in building and testing weapons.
The winning blades of each episode will be presented on the film studio’s “Winners Wall”. Some of these blades can be seen on the wall behind the standing contestants as parts of different episodes are tested. As a token of the show’s respect and gratitude for the contestants’ effort, time, and labor that went into the creation of each weapon, non-winning blades will be returned to contestants after each episode has aired.

The Season 4 episode “Master & Apprentice” featured four master/apprentice pairs of blacksmiths. Only one member of each pair was allowed to work at any time, swapping out every 30 minutes for the first two rounds and every day for the third. The non-working member was allowed to act in an advisory capacity. For this episode, the first round forge time has been increased to three and a half hours.
The “Ultimate Champions Edition” (Season 4) and “Rookies Edition” (Season 5) each contained five blacksmiths instead of four. The smiths had to forge a specific type of blade in their houses and bring those weapons to the studio for a pre-test. One blacksmith was eliminated based on the results of this test, after which the competition went through the normal three rounds.
On October 3, 2018, a five-week invitational tournament made its debut, consisting of four heats and a final. Four blacksmiths with a particular specialty (farrier, armorer, blacksmith, metalworker) competed in each heat, with the winners advancing to the finals for a $50,000 prize. Dave Partthemore from Connecticut won.
On May 8, 2019, a “Battle of the Branches” tournament began, in which four Blacksmiths from a different branch of the US Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines) competed in each heat.
During the 2019 season, Forged in Fire aired “extended” episodes called Forged in Fire: Cutting Deeper, which included bonus scenes from older episodes with expert tips and techniques from judges like Dave Baker explaining what happened to each blade during weapon testing. Each episode was two hours long (consisting of 2 older one hour episodes) and highlighted blade themes such as “Revolutionary War Swords” and “Curved Blades” etc.
On May 13, 2020, a special entitled Forged in Fire: Meet the Judges aired at 8/9c on History. Judges J. Neilson, Dave Baker and Doug Marcaida were in the “hot seat” as fans asked them questions about the show, their personal lives and bladesmithing techniques.
A special episode titled “Bladesgiving” aired at 10 p.m. on November 24, 2021. EST to history. The hunt takes place before Thanksgiving, where the Forged In Fire team presented classic hunting weapons. The episode saw five showdowns between championship hunting blades, bows, and spears crafted by some of the bladesmiths of the forge.

Beat the judges[edit]
On June 3, 2020, another spin-off series titled Forged in Fire: Beat the Judges premiered on History, hosted by Willis. Each episode, three previous Forged in Fire champions return to compete for an opportunity to face a judge (Neilson, Baker, or Abbott) and win an additional $10,000. For the first round (Level 1), the three smiths each brought a weapon in a style of their choice and made in their home smithy to the smithy and submitted it to Doug Marcaida for testing. The second round (Level 2) follows the same format as the third round in a typical Forged in Fire episode. However, the two remaining blacksmiths have only three days to forge a specimen of the featured weapon in their home forges. In the third round (Tier 3), the last remaining Blacksmith and the competing Judge have eight hours to create a fully functional example of a specific weapon type in the Forge, including handle assembly and grinding/sharpening/polishing. The other judges then test the guns and choose the $10,000 winner. I want to be prepared to provide the best possible service while going about my life, and I can’t tell you how many times the knife on me has allowed me to do just that. I think this experience has kept my knives very useful. From the cheapest to the most expensive, they are all tools for me. How they feel, how they cut, how they balance, how they fit in the sheath…these are my main concerns on the journey from raw material to finished knife. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a dreamer. But I live in the real world where real men with real tools still matter.
Having started making knives as a hobby when I was nineteen, I had the opportunity in my late twenties to leave the security of a regular job behind and see if I could once again venture further into the unknown and make a living from the hobby I loved. A few years later I left California with my pregnant wife and two children and moved to the southwestern Virginia mountains. Every day I leave my house, walk about 300 feet to my shop and continue the adventure. I work alone because that’s how I do my best work, and while I’m working on today’s knife, I’m working out the idea for tomorrow’s. The knife has evolved from being a metaphor of adventure to becoming an integral part of it.
Well, I’m not an adventure junkie. I like good coffee, homemade food and good cigars. (All good things alone, but all better in good company.) But I see the fallen tree and flat tire as an opportunity to see if I’m the man the little kid staring out of the classroom wished him to be would it be. I owe my God nothing less. Whether the path leads to failure or success, I do my best to thank him for every breath I got. As the writer to the Hebrews put it: “…Let us cast off every burden that weighs us down, especially sin that so easily causes us to stumble.
