What was your introduction to burlesque?
I’ve always been a collector of vintage decorations, and whenever I looked for vintage things, the images of Dita Von Teese always popped up. I never fully understood what she was doing until I attended one of her shows in San Francisco. From then on, I knew, THIS is what I want to do.
When did you know you had what it takes?
I never knew if I had what it took, but from the start I always said to myself, ‘I’m going to thrive in burlesque, this is what I’m going to do for a living’. I’ve always lived with the mindset that anything is possible if you just keep working hard and striving towards your goal. Who is your inspiration?
My friend and burlesque legend, the late Coby Yee. Coby was a burlesque dancer, fashion designer, and the boss of SF’s Chinatown’s Forbidden City. She started dancing in the 1940’s and has paved the way for me and so many other Asian burlesque performers ever since. Assuming your birth certificate doesn’t say Frankie Fictitious, where does your stage name come from?
I didn’t realize it at first but I think I named myself after my grandpa whose name is Franklin but his friends called him Franky for short!
What percentage of Frankie Fiction would we see if we met you at the grocery store?
The only way you could tell it was me is because I would wear either an all animal print or a matching tracksuit. What is your trademark?
Hmm…I’ve been told I always do that thing where I stick my tongue out and lick my teeth! But I also do a lot of backbends! What is your favorite costume piece of all time?
My favorite costume piece is always my newest costume! What is your most embarrassing mishap on stage?
Hmm…probably whenever I fall all the way on my bum or back and I’m looking at the ceiling. But I wouldn’t say it’s terribly embarrassing, it happens! What has been the best performance of your career so far?
My favorite performance was when I won Miss Exotic World in the Burlesque Hall of Fame in 2019. What’s your favorite place?
I love any venue with good lighting, a stage and curtains, or even a venue with a fun bar to dance to! How much do you ACTUALLY exercise?
I used to do a lot of rock climbing and yoga, but since I started burlesque my training has consisted of rehearsals and performances! Do you have any annoyances when it comes to other performers?
I just want people to celebrate and uplift each other. Have you ever dated a fan?
I hadn’t.
What’s the strangest gift you’ve ever received from a fan?
I wouldn’t call any of the gifts I received strange! Do you have any rituals before the show?
Not really, other than making sure I’m ready for the stage! If you could change one thing about the industry, what would it be?
I would love it if burlesque was more sustainable for artists to make a living from. If you could give a newbie one piece of advice, what would it be?
Work hard and when people discourage you or don’t support your burlesque style… prove them wrong!! What would you do if it wasn’t burlesque?
I think I would love to do interior design or fashion design! What do you want to be remembered for?
