Known more for his infamous stage antics than his music, Allin recorded prolifically not only in the punk rock genre but also in spoken word, country and more traditional rock. His lyrics, which often raised themes of violence and misanthropy, polarized listeners and created differing opinions about him within the highly politicized punk community.

Allin’s music was often poorly received and produced due to limited distribution, and was met with mostly negative reviews from critics, though he maintained a cult following throughout and after his career. Allin promised for several years that he would commit suicide on stage during one of his concerts, but he died instead on June 28, 1993 at the age of 36 of an accidental drug overdose.

Early life[edit]

Allin was born Jesus Christ Allin at Weeks Memorial Hospital in Lancaster, New Hampshire, the younger of two sons to Merle Colby Allin Sr. (1923–2001) and Arleta Gunther (1936–2019). He was given that name because his father told his wife that Jesus Christ had visited him and told him that his newborn son would be a great man in the sense of the Messiah.[7][11] In early childhood, Allin’s older brother, Merle Jr., couldn’t pronounce “Jesus” properly and called him “Jeje”,[12] which became “GG”.

Allin’s family lived in a log cabin in Groveton, New Hampshire, with no running water or electricity. His father was an abusive religious fanatic who threatened his family with death, dug graves in their basements, and threatened to fill them in the near future.[13] In an essay titled “The First Ten Years,” Allin wrote that Merle Sr. wanted to kill his family in a murder-suicide. He “scorned pleasure” and allowed his family “very little contact with others.” They lived a “primitive existence” and “were prisoners rather than family”. Allin also stated that his mother tried to escape before filing for divorce, but Merle Sr. thwarted the attempt by kidnapping Allin. Allin said that he was glad to experience such an upbringing and that it “made him a warrior at heart from an early age”.[13]

In 1961, Arleta filed for divorce from Merle Sr. as his mental instability worsened. Raised by their mother and stepfather from this time on, Allin and his brother settled in East St. Johnsbury, Vermont, in 1966.[7] Allin, a poor student, was placed in special education classes and had to repeat third grade. According to his older brother, he was bullied by fellow students for not conforming.[16] In his sophomore year of high school, he began attending school in crossdressing, which he says was inspired by the New York Dolls. When asked about his childhood, Allin said it was “very messy. Full of opportunities and dangers. We sold drugs, stole, broke into houses, cars… People even hated us back then.”[17]

Recording career[ edit ]

Early years[edit]

Allin’s earliest musical influences were British invasion bands of the 1960s, including Mott the Hoople and the Dave Clark Five. In the early 1970s, Alice Cooper became a major influence on Allin.[19] Allin’s earliest recorded musical endeavors were as a drummer. He also wrote most of his songs on an acoustic guitar. As a teenager, he and his older brother Merle, who plays bass guitar, formed their first band, Little Sister’s Date, which lasted just over a year.[18] The group covered songs by Aerosmith, Kiss and other popular rock bands of the time.[18] Both Allin and Merle had strong interests in punk rock. The Ramones, the MC5 and the Stooges were big influences on Allin.

He graduated from Concord High School in Concord, Vermont in 1975 and shortly thereafter formed the band Malpractice with his older brother, local musician Jeff Penney, and Brian Demurs (a high school friend). Allin played drums for Malpractice until the band split in 1977.

He began fronting the Jabbers from September 1977 to April 1984. Allin’s 1980 debut album was Always Was, Is and Always Shall Be for Orange Records. In addition to vocals, he played drums on most of the tracks. It was first reissued on CD by the Halycon imprint in 1995. At one point, industry veteran and Dead Boys producer Genya Ravan acted as his manager. Tensions within the Jabbers increased as Allin became uncontrollable, uncompromising, and vicious. The Jabbers disbanded in the spring of 1984. Her penultimate show was the opening for Charged GBH.[20]

Allin fronted many acts in the early to mid-1980s. These include albums by the Scumfucs, the Texas Nazis and the Cedar St. Sluts. Allin remained in the underground hardcore scene, but was not a part of the East Coast hardcore scene. His performances in Manchester, New Hampshire earned him the nickname “The Madman of Manchester”.

Allin gained wider attention with the ROIR cassette release of Hated in the Nation, which features tracks from Allin’s out-of-print catalog featuring the Jabbers, the Scumfucs and the Cedar St. Sluts. The tape also included several studio and concert recordings featuring an all-star band put together by producer Maximum RocknRoll and early Allin patron Mykel Board. This band consisted of Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis on lead guitar and Bongwater record producer/musician Mark Kramer on bass.

Mid-period and more extreme live performances[ edit ]

By the mid to late 1980s, Allin was an alcoholic and generally abused any drugs provided to him.

Allin first defecated onstage in 1985 at a show in Peoria, Illinois. According to colleague Bloody Mess, “I was with him when he bought the Ex-Lax. Unfortunately he ate it hours before the show so he had to keep holding it or he would have shit before he got on stage. … After he shit on the stage, complete chaos erupted in the hall … All the old men in charge of the hall went damn crazy! … Hundreds of confused punk kids freaked out and ran out the door because the smell was INCREDIBLE.”[21] Defecation became a staple of his stage show.

Allin idolized country legend Hank Williams and saw himself as a soul mate. Both were relative loners and misfits, both were habitual drug users, both lived with few (if any) possessions, and both tirelessly traveled the country. Allin’s acoustic output, documented on The Troubled Troubador EP, was heavily influenced by Williams. He recorded his own re-writes of Hank Williams Jr.’s “Family Tradition” and David Allan Coe’s “Longhaired Redneck”, naming his own versions “Scumfuc Tradition” and “Outlaw Scumfuc” respectively. Allin later also released another country album, Carnival of Excess, his finest recordings.

During this time, Allin also began performing many spoken word plays. Video footage of this is available but rare. Unwilling to seek permanent employment, Allin supported himself by selling his own records. Allin was also fascinated by serial killers. He wrote to John Wayne Gacy several times and visited him in prison, and Gacy painted a portrait of Allin that became the album cover for the film Hated: GG Allin and the Murder Junkies soundtrack.

By this point, Allin’s performances, which often resulted in extensive damage to venues and sound systems, were routinely stopped after just a few songs by police or venue owners. Allin has been charged multiple times with assault and assault or indecent exposure. His constant touring was only stopped by jail time or lengthy hospital stays for broken bones, blood poisoning and other physical trauma.

Another attraction to Allin performances was his constant threats of suicide. In 1989, Allin wrote to Maximum RocknRoll that he would commit suicide on stage on Halloween 1989. When that day came, however, he was in prison. He continued his threat every year, but ended up in jail every year after Halloween. When asked why he didn’t carry out his threats, Allin explained: “At GG you don’t get what you expect – you get what you deserve.”[23] He also stated that suicide should only be committed , when one has reached its climax, encounters the hereafter most strongly, not weakest.[24]

In June 1993, Allin appeared on The Jane Whitney Show. This interview is notorious for being his last interview and for Allin’s aggression towards the audience. Allin openly stated that he would commit suicide and take his fans with him. When questioned by Jane, he clarified that he would force her to commit suicide as well, or kill her. Allin also stated that by the age of 35 he could sleep with girls, boys and animals aged 12, 13 and 16 and claimed that he had raped both women and men at his concerts.[25]

Letter of November 1989

1989 trial and imprisonment

In late 1989, Allin was arrested in Ann Arbor, Michigan and charged with “assault with intent to cause less than murder bodily harm” to an acquaintance.

In a psychological evaluation conducted as part of the trial, Allin was judged to have at least average intelligence and was described as “polite, cooperative and outspoken”. The unnamed reviewer noted that Allin did not appear psychotic and was comfortable with his unorthodox lifestyle. However, the assessor claimed Allin was an alcohol dependent and had a mixed personality disorder with narcissistic, borderline and masochistic traits.

Allin initially denied the allegations, claiming the woman was willing to take part in her sexual activities. Allin admitted to cutting her, burning her, and drinking her blood, but insisted she did the same to him. Allin also claimed that contradictions in the woman’s statements to authorities supported his claims. The judge in the case agreed that the woman’s account had significant discrepancies. Ultimately, however, Allin pleaded guilty to the reduced assault charge, and he was imprisoned from December 25, 1989 to March 26, 1991.

During this time in prison, Allin felt renewed energy about his life and “mission.” During this time he wrote the Manifesto of GG Allin[27].

Hated documentation and final days[edit]

After his release from prison, Allin waived parole to go on another tour, footage of which was filmed for Todd Phillips’ documentary Hated: GG Allin and the Murder Junkies. The film included graphic scenes from a performance Allin gave at the Space at Chase rock club in Manhattan’s East Village. A heavily intoxicated Allin stripped naked, defecated on the floor, wiped his feces on himself, and threw feces into the audience. He also threw beer bottles, broke a woman’s nose and attacked several other people in the crowd. Clips of other Allin performances as well as interviews with Allin, his band and their fans were included. The film was released in 1993 and later released on DVD in 1997.

In 1991, GG recorded an album entitled Murder Junkies which was released by New Rose Records and featured Antiseen as his backing band. This album contained 10 pieces of music and 10 pieces of spoken word. Freaks, Fagots, Drunks and Junkies aside, Allin considered this album to be the one that most accurately reflected his personality and philosophy of life. During this period, Allin also recorded the album War in My Head – I’m Your Enemy, which was released on Awareness Records and performed with the band Shrinkwrap. This particular album consists of a 45 minute track that is a collage of spoken word pieces (mainly from the same recordings as Murder Junkies) set to music by Shrinkwrap.

Allin’s growing fame led to appearances on various television shows: Geraldo, The Jerry Springer Show and The Jane Whitney Show. At the time of his death, Allin was making plans for a spoken word album. He also mentioned a somewhat unlikely European tour, which he talked about enthusiastically in the hours leading up to his death.[29]

Personal life[edit]

Family and relationships[edit]

GG Allin married Sandra Farrow on October 6, 1978.[30] They divorced in 1985.[30]

In the mid-1980s, Allin became engaged to a young girl named Tracy Deneault from Garland, Texas.[30] She became pregnant and their daughter Nico Ann Deneault was born on March 13, 1986.[30] Nico has chosen to distance herself from her family.[31] Allin and Tracey Deneault never married.[30] At the time of his death, Liz Mankowski was GG Allin’s “girlfriend”. Mankowski was 17 when they met while appearing together (alongside Mankowski’s sister and father) on The Jerry Springer Show. They also appeared on The Jane Whitney Show in 1993 along with another Allin fan named Wendy. [33]

GG Allin’s older brother, Merle Allin, was bassist for his last band, the Murder Junkies.

beliefs [edit]

Allin was a self-proclaimed extreme individualist, misanthrope, and anti-authoritarian who promoted lawlessness and anti-cop violence in many of his lyrics; his essay The GG Allin Manifesto[34] was intended to summarize his personal philosophy. He revealed to Geraldo that he believed his body was a temple of rock and roll and that his flesh, blood, and bodily fluids were a communion with humans. Another reason for his on-stage antics (from Dino, his band’s drummer) was that he wanted to draw a parallel between his actions and “a society going mad with violence”. He has also said that if he weren’t a performer, he would probably be a serial killer or a mass murderer.[16]

Regarding Allin’s views on death, he believed in some sort of life after death. He planned to kill himself on stage on Halloween many times in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but was stopped for jail time around Halloween each year. Explaining his views on death in the film Hated: GG Allin and the Murder Junkies, he said, “It’s like I have this wild soul that just wants to get out of this life. She’s too limited in this life. I think that pulling yourself out at your peak…if you could die at your peak, your strongest point, then your soul will be so much stronger in the next existence.”[35]

death [edit]

GG Allin’s last show was on June 27, 1993 at a small club called The Gas Station, a punk venue in a former gas station at 194 East 2nd Street in Manhattan. In a first-hand account by Michael Bowling [36], the show ended after three songs when a scuffle broke out. Allin ended up outside leading a group of fans around the neighborhood.[29]

Bowling continued his narration of the evening after the show. After walking the streets for almost an hour, Allin finally went to Johnny Puke’s apartment. There he and others continued to party and take drugs. Along with Johnny Puke, Allin took large amounts of heroin, which he overdosed and ended up in an unconscious state. Sometime in the early morning of June 28, Allin died from complications from a heroin overdose. Later that morning, Puke noticed Allin still lying motionless in the same spot he left him and posed with the body for Polaroids before calling an ambulance. Allin was pronounced dead at the scene. He was two months short of his 37th birthday.[29]

funeral [edit]

Allin’s funeral was on July 3, 1993 in his native New Hampshire at St. Rose Cemetery in Littleton. At his funeral, Allin’s bloated, unpreserved body was clad in his black leather jacket and signature jockstrap.[37] Allin’s funeral turned into a low-level party.[38]

Video footage of the sound check, concert and aftermath of Allin’s final concert on the day of his death was included with the 1997 DVD release of Hated.

GG Allin’s grave was frequently vandalized by fans with urine, feces, cigarette butts and alcohol,[39] an act strongly discouraged by GG’s mother Arleta.[31] His gravestone was removed in 2010 after he was pushed off base by a fan, GG’s brother had just moved and his mother was going to Florida for the winter while this was happening.

Hank Williams III’s 2008 album Damn Right, Rebel Proud includes the song “P.F.F.”, which includes the line “This song is written and dedicated to GG Allin” at the beginning.

On December 13, 2018, Showtime premiered the 2017 documentary GG Allin: All in the Family, which documents Allin’s life, career, and death, and how his brother and mother coped with his death 20 years later.
