More than 4 million people have signed a petition on Change.org asking Colorado Gov. Jared Polis to pardon or commute truck driver Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Mederos’ sentence.
The 26-year-old Cuban immigrant was sentenced to 110 years in prison on Monday, two months after a jury found him guilty of four counts of 27 counts — including involuntary manslaughter — for his involvement in a 2019 crash on I-70 in Lakewood people dead.

The petition, created by Heather Gilbee, was revived Monday after a three-year hiatus following the court’s sentencing of Aguilera-Mederos.
“We all know about the crash on I-70 in Denver, Colorado. Most of us have heard facts about this case,” the petition reads, adding later: “This accident was neither intentional nor a criminal act on the part of the driver. No one but the trucking company he is/was employed by should be held responsible for this accident.”

A Change.Org spokesperson told FOX 31 that the petition in support of Aguilera-Mederos was the site’s fastest-growing petition of the year.
The office of Gov. Polis said in a statement Wednesday that they are “aware of this issue,” according to the outlet.
Domingo Garcia, president of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), told ABC7 that the organization had sent a letter to Governor Polis asking for a pardon or reduced sentence on Aguilera-Medero’s behalf.
Garcia also said LULAC is investigating whether the Jefferson County District Attorney abused its powers — and may file charges with the Colorado Bar Association.
“The injustice in this case is so outrageous,” he told the broadcaster.
Judge A. Bruce Jones remarked on Monday’s sentencing of Aguilera-Mederos that he believes the truck driver did not intentionally harm others but is required by law to hand down 26 consecutive sentences.

“If I had the discretion, if I thought I had the discretion, I wouldn’t impose those sentences back-to-back,” Jones said at the time. “I accept and respect what the defendant said about his lack of intent to hurt people, but he made a series of terrible decisions, reckless decisions.”
Before sentencing, one of the victims’ daughters told Judge Jones, per FOX 31, “I know I won’t have my father for the rest of my life, but I hope the defendant’s son can have his father for the rest of his life.” ”
Millions Sign Petition to Reduce 110-Year Sentence for Trucker in Deadly Crash
“I’ve been in this system for 32 years and I’ve never seen anything like this,” said James Colgan, an attorney for Mr Aguilera-Mederos.
“I think there’s a pretty good chance the governor will be positive about that,” he said, adding, “This is really, really, really something extraordinary.”

Conor Cahill, a spokesman for Mr Polis, said: “We welcome a request” from the defense “and will expedite the review, but have not received one at this time.”
Mr Colgan said he was planning a commutation that mitigates the severity of the sentence, not a pardon that excuses or forgives the offence. A commutation would not change the jury’s decision to convict Mr Aguilera-Mederos, but would change how much time he would spend in detention, if any.
Gage Evans, the wife of William Bailey, who died in the crash, said on Sunday that she did not believe Mr Aguilera-Mederos’ sentence should be commuted. Instead, she believes state legislatures should reevaluate the law that forces him to serve each of his sentences sequentially.
