Gregg Russell is a nationally known singer, songwriter, and actor who performs regularly on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.[1] He has shared the stage with such famous acts as Steve Martin, The Beach Boys, George Burns and Stephen Curtis Chapman. He has performed at hundreds of college campuses, many major corporate conventions, family reunions and events across the country and is Carnival Cruise Lines’ lead entertainer.

Entertainment and music career[edit]

As of 2021, Russell has been performing under an old oak tree in Harbor Town on Hilton Head Island every summer for the past 44 years.[2][3] Based on concert attendance records and YouTube hits, Russell’s performances have been viewed by over three million people.[2] Many children who see his show sign up for the “kid friendly Bubble Gum Cruise,” where Russell performs as the singer and entertainer. The cruise is intended to be family-oriented and features dolphin watching on Calibogue Sound.[1] Gregg also has over 30 YouTube videos and some with over 5000 views.[4]

Original compositions [ edit ]

With the help of Dennis Scott, Gregg Russell wrote the music for the SCETV/Wardley children’s series Dooley and Pals. Gregg Russell has created a CD album entitled Stop, Look and Listen containing many of the songs from the series. He has written and performed hundreds of children’s songs. His credits include writing and performing original music for specials on the USA Networks, CBS, and NBC.[5]

Acting career[edit]

Gregg Russell has appeared in two award-winning productions, Come Away Home and Camp Tanglefoot.[1][2]

Come away home[edit]

Come Away Home, written by Kat Shehata, won the Benjamin Franklin Award. It’s a film about a girl named Annie who is forced to stay with her grandfather on Hilton Head Island for a summer. The film was shot exclusively on Hilton Head Island in the summer of 2004 and released in 2005.[6] Russell made his debut as a performer who lost his family in a tragic accident and became friends with Annie. Through their friendship, they find a sense of belonging and overcome similar tragedies in their family situations.[7] This film was made by American Family Movies, Stephen M. Zakman Productions and directed by Doug McKeon.[6] Most reviews were positive, with a minority of negative reviews. One of the many reviews on Flixster.com read: “Sweet movie about realizing what you have and not wasting it. A touching film about the classic coming-of-age country girl who realizes there’s more to the world than malls and big city fun. “[8] Another review of the film Come Away Home is found in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, “Some of the acting was unprofessional but otherwise a great family film to watch with the kids.”[9]

Russell plays the camp counselor in the Camp Tanglefoot film production. Not only did he play a leading role in the film, he also produced it. Camp Tanglefoot was filmed at Camp Highlander in North Carolina and released in 1999. The film won Best Live Action Video for Children in 2000.[10] According to Russell’s official website, greggrussell.com, “it shocked millions when the video sold out in four days.” The video went “gold” upon initial release, indicating a million dollars in sales. It contains numerous children’s songs written and performed exclusively by Gregg Russell himself.[11] According to a review on Amazon.com, “The video’s message brings families heartwarming drama and good, clean entertainment.”[12]

Philanthropy[ edit ]

Hilton Head Heroes[edit]

Russell is co-founder and president of Hilton Head Heroes, a non-profit charity.[2] His wife, Lindy Russell, is the other co-founder and CEO.[13] This philanthropic venture was established in 1998. As reported by hhheroes.com, “Gregg would travel the country entertainingly, and after his performances would go to local hospitals in the area and sing to the sick children there.”[14] Gregg and Lindy loved the children and knew what for a great time the kids would have if they could spend a week at the beach away from the hospitals with their families; thus was born Hilton Head Heroes.[15] The reported mission is to help families with children aged 4 to 18 suffering from serious illnesses by allowing them a week-long vacation away from doctors and hospital stays.[2][16] Hilton Head Heroes spends approximately $1,500 per family to help with housing, meals, gas, gift certificates, many family activities and day camps like miniature golf, boating, beach toys and more. The families are staying at the HERO house on Hilton Head Island at Sea Pines Resort.[17] Donations from companies and individuals keep this project going. Lindy Russell searches for potential children and their families through the Medical University of South Carolina and Backus Children’s Hospital in Savannah, Georgia. They narrow it down by selecting families who can’t afford vacations.[18]

Lids for children [ edit ]

Lids for Kids is another program launched as an extension of Hilton Head Heroes. In recent years, this program has distributed over 1,000 baseball caps to children undergoing chemotherapy.[5]
