He’s from Massachusetts
Jamie Benjamin Horowitz is from Massachusetts, although his work took him to Los Angeles. There is not much information about his early life. Big Ten Network’s Mark Silverman hired for Jamie Horowitz’s old Fox job
Fox Sports has finally filled the position of Jamie Horowitz. Horowitz, the former president of the company’s national networks, was fired in July on allegations of sexual harassment, with no immediate replacement named. According to Sports Business Journal’s John Ourand, Fox has now brought in Mark Silverman, president of the Big Ten Network, for the role.
Interestingly, Silverman will also continue to oversee BTN (which is 51 percent owned by Fox, 49 percent owned by the conference and operated by Fox).
Here are more details from Ourand’s play:
Fox Sports hired Mark Silverman as president of National Networks, a position that has been open since July when the network fired Jamie Horowitz. Silverman, who is currently President of Big Ten Network, will have a larger role than Horowitz as he will oversee all programming, production, marketing and digital for Fox Sports, FS1 and FS2. Silverman will oversee all live events and studio shows produced by these networks. Silverman, hired 11 years ago as BTN’s first and only President, will continue to oversee this channel.
The “greater role” comment appears to refer primarily to live event production, since Horowitz appears to have held those other responsibilities. When he was hired in April 2015, Fox said he would “oversee all programming, marketing and planning for Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2, reporting directly to [Fox Sports President Eric] Shanks.” However, John Entz became concurrent Promoted to “President, Producer and Executive Producer, responsible for all live event production, pre- and post-game coverage, and studio and technical operations.” And although Horowitz initially had no control over Digital, he controversially took over that division between September 2016 and January 2017, eventually firing all of Fox Sports’ writers and transitioning their website to video clips from their debate shows. (Which didn’t go well, to say the least.)
FS1’s non-event studio shows, however, seemed to have mostly fallen under Horowitz when it came to production when he appointed Charlie Dixon as his deputy in July 2015 with the title of “Executive Vice President of Content and Production for Fox Sports 1 and Fox ‘ hired Sports 2’ and the responsibility of ‘overseeing all content and production on the channels’. Both Dixon (now Executive Vice President, Content) and Entz (President, Production) will now report to Silverman per Ourand’s article, making for a simpler structure. Silverman’s other direct reports at Fox include Bill Wagner (executive vice president, programming, live operations & research) and Robert Gottlieb (executive vice president, marketing).
Although Silverman still reports to Shanks, he oversees a lot of things here. It was probably necessary to bring him in; Silverman was BTN’s first and only president for 11 years, overseeing everything from business to content, so he had a very good job in Chicago. There had been speculation about him as a potential Horowitz replacement, but only if Fox could persuade him to move to Los Angeles, with Ourand listing him as one of six candidates in July, writing: “Fox Brass would like to persuade the respected Silverman to move from Chicago to take this job. But it would take a Herculean job in sales to convince Silverman to accept a job so heavily focused on studio production, especially considering he currently handles everything from ad sales and affiliate relationships to the production of live events at BTN.” Well, they did it.
What will be really interesting to watch is how many of Horowitz’s decisions, if any, Silverman reverses. Going another route won’t be easy, as it seems that Horowitz’s plans were largely backed by Shanks, and most of them wouldn’t be easy to undo. For example, the move to video was a Horowitz idea, but Shanks endorsed it, saying shortly after Horowitz was fired, “It was a strategic decision that I and the entire company wholeheartedly supported. Our unique consumer proposition is that we make premium videos.” And while that has destroyed FoxSports.com’s traffic, as has been the case with several other outlets that have taken similar steps, it also means they don’t pay writers have to. Also, this step is a bit of a “can’t put the genie back in the bottle” in a way, especially after this amount of time; Even if FoxSports.com were to return to something similar to what it used to be, it probably wouldn’t get its old audience back (at least not right away), as many of those readers have moved on and don’t see the Fox website as a travel destination anymore.
Likewise, making drastic changes to FS1 studio programming and its Embrace Debate philosophy will be difficult, at least for the foreseeable future. Undisputed co-host Skip Bayless joined the network in August 2016 on a four-year deal worth close to $25 million, so he’ll be there at least until 2020, and you can’t really ask him to do anything other than debate . Colin Cowherd joined Fox in August 2015 on a four-year deal valued at over $6 million annually (including TV and radio work), so he’ll be staying until at least 2019. And while Undisputed and The Herd don’t generally garner great ratings, they seem to have more traction than anything Fox has tried (outside of NASCAR Race Hub, maybe). More marginal shows like Speak For Yourself could see adjustments or cancellations, but the key parts of the FS1 lineup seem likely to stick around for a while.
Of course, Silverman also oversees the successes of Fox Sports and in particular their live event broadcasts. They’ve done very well with ratings for MLB (especially the playoffs and World Series), the NFL, major NCAA games (including their new top pick of Big Ten games), and soccer, and haven’t had too many major complaints either one of these shows. It will be interesting to see how their coverage of the 2018 World Cup fares in terms of ratings, especially with the USA not participating in the tournament, but the 2015 Women’s World Cup indicated that Fox will likely be fine on the broadcast side. So there’s not necessarily a ton of changes Silverman needs to make to Fox’s live events, and those are achievements he can perhaps build on.
It will be worth keeping an eye on how Silverman fares in this new role. He’s well respected for his tenure at BTN, and he’s been given quite a bit of power, at least seemingly. But FS1 and FS2 still face myriad challenges, as does Fox Sports Digital, and none of them have particularly easy solutions. It’s a tough job Silverman gets into and it will be interesting to see what he does with it.
