The Krankies reveal truth about swinging and ‘anywhere, anytime’ sex life

The pair hang Jimmy Krankie’s schoolboys forever after a fan Dabi Dozi career

The Krankies reveal the truth about swinging and sex life ‘anywhere, anytime’.

Ian Tough takes a seat and hoists his 4ft 5in wife onto his lap as he has done for the past half century.

Janette sits on his left knee, her tiny ones dangling, before turning to give him a wide, cheeky grin.

But then, for the first time in 50 years, the couple just stare into each other’s eyes and enjoy the moment.

Instead of Ian grabbing Janette’s neck and tossing her around like a ventriloquist’s dummy as she sings “But You Love Me Daddy” through a godforsaken grin.

Because – keyword painful breathing from every child of the 70s – the Krankies have made an end.

Yes, the fan dabi dozi comedy legends loved by millions of crackerjack and panto fans have announced their retirement from showbiz.

In an exclusive interview, Ian and Janette have debunked pal Christopher Biggins’ recent claims that political correctness killed their innuendo-laden act. And they sadly revealed it was ill health that forced Wee Jimmy to hang up his school cap for good.

“I was diagnosed with osteoporosis three years ago,” explains Janette, 73.

“My back isn’t good and I can’t do as much as I used to. When Ian and I took a cruise to the Caribbean last month to celebrate our golden wedding anniversary, we decided it was time to put our feet up.”

Chatting over tea and jam sandwiches at their home in Torquay, Devon, the pair share funny tales of their careers – and some cheeky tales of sick-panky, too.

They admit they are a psychoanalyst’s dream — a woman playing a 10-year-old schoolchild married to a man who dresses up as her aunt, with a tongue-in-cheek routine.

“There won’t be another character like Wee Jimmy Krankie,” says Ian, also 73.

“Today you would call him transphobic. But it was just innocent fun – traditional pantomime humor.

“Everyone loves double meanings – the kids get the humor on one level and the adults get the gag.”

They had never had a complaint until 2017, when they appeared in Dick Whittington with good friend John Barrowman.

“One woman called it dirty,” says Janette. “We shot a scene in bed with John. Wee Jimmy said “I can feel your Tinkie Winkie” and pulled out a Teletubby. Then John said ‘No – that’s MY Tinkie-Winkie’ and pulled out a big one.”

“Dirty Thirties”

There were other side issues, though… poking fun at reports that the Krankies were, um, swingers. So is it true?

“No,” says Ian. “It was never an orgy or a wife swap party or a swinger club. We just had a bit of a wild time when we had a lot of fun – our Dirty Thirties.”

And what exactly did that entail?

“Well,” explains Janette, “We did a revue act in 1981 that had a magician with a leopard named Scorpio on his show.

“He had a lion tamer named Rocky and an assistant named Angie – so I had a little ding-dong with Rocky and Ian did the same with Angie.

“Ian used to joke that I smell home and smell like leopard while he comes back with glitter on his dentures.”

“We always had an attitude about sex, but we both knew what the other was doing,” says Janette.

“But as we got more exposure on children’s television, we were playing with fire. We didn’t want kisses and stories to be told, so we calmed down.”

Presumably after the incident with the Status Quo tour bus?

“Oh yeah,” says Ian. “We needed a bus for our support act, a five piece band and a troupe of dancers. Status Quo kindly lent us theirs.

“But when we returned it a week later, it was broken. Even the rockers were stunned.”

Ian and Janette met while she was working at Panto’s Glasgow Pavilion and he was the theater electrician. They married in 1969, but were already doubles and learned the trade in workers’ clubs.

“In the beginning we did visual humor with big props,” says Janette. “I played Moira Anderson singing ‘These Are My Mountains’ while my breasts were inflated with a pump.”

(Prince Philip was a fan and once told them he “loved the fools.”)

“I used to dress up as Womble, too,” she says. “This scared a drunk to death at the stage door in Partick who thought he saw a giant walking rat.”

His wife’s childish looks got her into trouble. Ian says: “In 1969 we were driving back from a gig when the police stopped us. They were hunting the Cannock Chase child killer and wanted to know what I was doing with a little girl.

Little Jimmy is born

“Janette said ‘I’m not a kid’ and had to explain what we did before they let us go. It wasn’t very nice to be taken for a madman.”

It could be worse. The original plan was for Janette to be a St. Trinian style schoolgirl. “But as soon as she put on gym briefs and ripped stockings, we were like, ‘Whoa, no… Too sexual!'”

Then they found Ian’s brother’s school cap and his grandfather’s boots – and Wee Jimmy was born.

The Krankies had their big break on television in 1974 on Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club.

Four years later they won Comedy Club Act of the Year and got a spot on The Royal Variety Show ahead of the Queen Mum. “It was incredible,” Janette recalls.

“I made the joke where Jimmy counts his fingers with his hands in his pockets… and comes to 11. The Queen Mum loved it. The next morning people on the street started shouting ‘Hey Jimmy’ because 24 million people were watching.”

The Krankies were stars and when they joined Crackerjack, viewership went from 2.5 million to 8.5 million. They had their own show, The Krankies Klub, and recorded an album called Fan-dabi-dozi – Jimmy’s popular catchphrase.

They were so famous they even had a stalker. “She was about Janette’s height and I think she was into me,” says Ian. “She started writing Jan fan letters but then said she was going to kill her.

“She showed up in the theater on the second row. We never took any police action but I believe she was eventually separated when she disappeared.”

In later years, The Krankies became panto favorites. But in 2004, tragedy struck during Jack and the Beanstalk in Glasgow. Janette fell 15 feet from the mechanical beanstalk, sustaining a fractured skull, collarbone, ribs and two vertebrae. “I thought I lost her,” says Ian. “It was terrifying.”

Janette recovered physically (she later received £130,000 in compensation) but the psychological impact was huge. “She lost her confidence and wanted to go out of business,” says Ian. “But Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders sent her a get well gift and invited her to their show.”

Janette made a string of hilarious guest appearances and Ian joined her in a brilliant spoof of The Silence of the Lambs.

“French and Saunders got Janette back in business,” says Ian.

“But now I’m really ready to quit,” she says. “It became more and more difficult to learn new panto parts. Last year Ian Donald Trump and I was Kim Jong Un – guests at Cinderella’s Ball. Now I just want to be me.”

But after half a century of bewitching, won’t they get bored?

“Oh no,” says Ian. “We still love a good party — they’re just a little more tame…

“We’ve always been careful with money – so now we’re going to spend it and enjoy our retirement.”

“It’s going to be Fan-Dabi-Dozi.”
