Klaus Obermeyer

Klaus F. Obermeyer (born December 2, 1919) is a German-born American businessman and founder of Sport Obermeyer, Ltd.

Biography[edit]

In 1947 Klaus came to Aspen, Colorado, where his friend Friedl Pfeiffer had opened the Aspen Ski School. For the next twelve years, he spent his days working as a ski instructor at Aspen Mountain. He founded Sport Obermeyer based on knowledge he gained about skiwear while working as a ski instructor and started the business in the attic of his home. There was born one of the first of many innovations in the form of a down ski parka sewn together from its goose down comforter. After that came high altitude sunscreen, turtlenecks, nylon wind shirts, mirrored sunglasses, the Boot Fit Press and more. In 1961 Sport Obermeyer’s first factory warehouse opened in Aspen and innovations continued with ‘soft shell’ jackets, double lens goggles, the first waterproof breathable fabrics, an integrated ski boot dump system and fashion forward skiwear.

Awards[edit]

Klaus was immigrated to the U.S. in 1997. inducted into the National Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame.[1] He was also inducted into the Colorado Business Hall of Fame in 2015 by Junior Achievement-Rocky Mountain and the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce. In a news story published in early December 2017, The Aspen Times reported that Obermeyer continues to serve as CEO of his company and has just celebrated his 98th birthday.[2]

Innovations[ edit ]

Among Klaus’ many innovations, some of the most notable are:

The quilted down parka sewn together from its own down comforter.

The first mirrored ski goggles made of vaporized metal. [3]

The first nylon wind shirt.

With Friedl Pfeiffer, the first high-altitude sunscreen. [4]

A two-layer ski boot, the first with a warm inner boot and a rigid outer shell.

The first turtleneck sweaters with an elasticated collar.

The 2-tine ski brakes.

100th birthday party[edit]

On Obermeyer’s 100th birthday, on December 2, 2019, the city of Aspen threw a big birthday party in his honor. The celebration took place in the Hotel Jerome Ballroom and began with a private party at 1:00 p.m., followed by a public party at 3:00 p.m. At the party, according to the Aspen Times, “women showered him with kisses. Men shook hands heartily. Scores of people took selfies with Obermeyer, one of the original ski instructors on Aspen Mountain…”.[5]

As Aspen icon Klaus Obermeyer celebrates his 100th birthday on Monday, friends and family say there really is no secret to his longevity — he’s a testament to the power of positive thinking and mindfulness of one’s health.

“Happy people are healthy people and they live longer,” said longtime Aspen resident John McBride, who first met Klaus decades ago at the age of 9 on a ski trip to Aspen. “He’s a great optimist. It’s a pleasure to be with him.”

Klaus was born on December 2, 1919 in Oberstaufen, Germany. In 1947 he moved to Aspen to teach skiing at the invitation of Friedl Pfeifer. He taught at Aspen Mountain for 12 years before dedicating himself to his ski apparel company, Sport Obermeyer, which he continues to run.

Klaus has the most recognizable face in Aspen and it’s a face that always smiles. He’s quick with a laugh. He always takes the time to say hello. He is as pleasant with strangers as with longtime friends.

Klaus Obermeyer Jr. said what you see with his father is real. Klaus Sr. not only makes a good face in public. He is always positive.

“He never hesitates about that,” he said.

Klaus Jr. said his father was a big inspiration in his life. They always got along well. All his life, he said, he ate breakfast with his father whenever possible. Even if he stayed away a little too long as a boisterous younger man, he would wake himself out of bed to spend time with his father. His filmmaking career requires him to split his time between Los Angeles and Aspen, but he still has breakfast with his father whenever he’s in town and talks to him every night.

He believes that Klaus’ good nature rubs off on those around him. He admires that his father “has so much willpower and uses it well.”

“He works his butt off to stay in shape. He really does,” Klaus Jr. said. “He just split a piece of wood last week.”

Another son of Klaus, Wally Obermeyer, plans to share 10 lessons his father taught him at a birthday party for Klaus on Monday. The lessons revolve around optimism, taking care of yourself and connecting with nature. He shared the 10 lessons in no particular order.

Wally said Klaus always says, “Our greatest freedom is how we look at things. We have the choice of perception. We can choose to look at something positively or negatively.”

People often tend to become jaded as they age. That wasn’t the case with Klaus, Wally said. He stressed the importance of optimism. Obsessing over the “good old days” doesn’t exist for Klaus.

“He would say Aspen has never been better,” Wally said.

He doesn’t let adversity get him down. Wally said one of Klaus’ guiding principles is to take on a challenge.

“Our problems are our teachers and we should embrace them,” he said, quoting his father.

Another lesson is, “Do what you love.” Klaus “likes to ski,” says Wally. Klaus told The Aspen Times a few years ago that he started skiing when he was 3 years old. He’s looking forward to his 103rd birthday and can say he’s spent a century on skis.

Klaus was inspired to start his business to create clothing and gear that enables other people to share the joy of the great outdoors.

Humor was and is a big part of Klaus’ life. He can laugh at himself.

“His inventory of jokes is really good,” Wally said.

He treats his body like a temple. Klaus doesn’t drink alcohol, except as a courtesy by having half a glass of wine on Thanksgiving, Wally said. His only indulgence is whipped cream on his daily morning coffee.

“We have a body and we have to take care of it,” is Klaus’ motto.

Klaus still swims half a mile a day. He also learned the martial art of Aikido from Tom Crum, a recognized expert in conflict resolution, peak performance and stress management. Crum said Klaus is always “fascinated to learn.”

“His mindset is very, very strong. He has very good energy,” he said. “He has a purpose in life. That gives (him) longevity and health.”

While no longer working on the physical side of Aikido, Crum and Klaus have developed a deep friendship and meet regularly to talk about life.

“I would say Klaus is as much a teacher as a student of mine,” Crum said.

Hand in hand with staying active, according to Wally, is Klaus’ refusal to complain about his health. Even when Klaus catches a cold, he credits his body for telling him he needs to tweak something, like getting more rest.

Klaus also stays connected to nature, be it skiing or at his Midvalley Ranch. Wally related how one day Klaus was picking apples from his trees and then sat down in a chair on his open porch with the apple pail on his lap to take a nap. Klaus woke up when a foraging deer started eating one of the apples.

Some of the lessons Wally learned from Klaus are the basics of his business philosophy. Klaus is looking for “win-win situations” with the manufacturers and retailers who sell Sport Obermeyer clothing.

Klaus reminds his colleagues at the company, “Your reputation is your working capital,” Wally said.

Both Klaus Jr. and Wally cited their father’s ordeal in Germany to inspire his everlasting optimism.

“He came out of such hardship and experienced so much horror in Nazi Germany,” said Klaus Jr.

Klaus was an aeronautical engineer and worked in an aircraft factory in Munich. Late in the war, before he checked in one morning, his boss warned him that Gestapo agents were inquiring about him, Wally said.

According to Wally, it’s not widely known that Klaus is partially Jewish. The Gestapo found out about his origins and presumably prepared his transfer to a concentration camp.

“My father tried to escape to Switzerland on skis,” Wally said.

He attempted to cross the guarded border at night but was spotted and told to stop. Klaus was turning and skiing on the German side when he was shot in the back. He fell off a cliff and shattered a femur. He evaded capture and managed to make his way to the nearest village, where nuns and an understanding doctor treated and protected him.

“The war ended while he was still in traction hospital,” Wally said.

Klaus came to the United States at the age of 27. He has often told the story of how he had to make a parka to sell because his Aspen ski school students were getting too cold to stay on the slopes. Without students there was no pay. With a warm down parka, they would stay.

Upon his induction into the Sporting Goods Industry Hall of Fame in 2019, Klaus was credited with inventing zip-up turtlenecks, nylon windbreakers, mirrored sunglasses, double goggles, two-pronged ski brakes, plastic ski boots and high-altitude sun protection. He was also inducted into the Colorado Business Hall of Fame in 2001 and of course the Aspen Hall of Fame.

Clearly he has worked with numerous associates over the years and is well respected by his team. Katie Wabiszewski is a longtime customer service associate at Sport Obermeyer who has also become a close friend of Klaus’s.

“I feel like we’ve been successful here, and to be successful you have to be a great leader,” she said.

Employees are given the freedom to create their own success, Wabiszewski added.

The employees of Sport Obermeyer have family closeness. Wabiszewski often goes to lunch with Klaus and they used to play tennis regularly. Instead of intense battles, they would practice to hone various skills – and just have fun.

“We wouldn’t play tennis to be competitive,” she said. “We would only play until we died laughing.”

She always enjoyed Klaus’ sense of humor. He can make a joke out of any word or phrase that is spoken. He could spontaneously come up with little poems, said Wabiszewski.

“He just looks for the good in things,” she said.

And of course Klaus has achieved legendary status on the ski slopes. Wabiszewski joked that Klaus is a solo skier.

“Most of the time he was going too fast for anyone to keep up with,” she said. “It’s a fact. Ask anyone.”
