Amateur career[edit]

Tony Tucker became a boxer under the influence of his father, Bob Tucker, also a former amateur boxer who became his trainer and manager and poured his fortune into developing his son’s boxing career. Tony fought in Grand Rapids, Michigan and competed at the light heavyweight division for most of his amateur career, his billed weight at the 1979 Pan American Games right up to the division’s weight limit (178 lbs).

Robert Surkein, the national boxing chairman of the Amateur Athletic Union, said of Tucker, “Believe me, he’s better than Leon Spinks. Spinks couldn’t hold this kid’s gloves at a comparable stage.”[3] Rollie Schwartz, former national chairman of the AAU Boxing Commission, said of Tucker ahead of the Olympics, “Tucker is a combination boxer and puncher, much like Joe Louis . He comes straight at you. I would take him over the two so-called light heavyweight champions tomorrow.”[4]

1980 Olympics[edit]

Tony Tucker had been anticipating participation in the Olympic Games in Moscow since 1979.[5][6] Tucker was a proxy for the United States Olympic team for the 1980 Summer Olympics (Lee Roy Murphy qualified first.) President Jimmy Carter ordered the Olympics to be boycotted, which resulted in the US team withdrawing its participation in the Olympics Play canceled and instead embarked on a series of exhibitions in Europe. On March 14, 1980, their plane Polish Airlines IL-62 en route to Poland crashed near Warsaw, with the US boxing team on board, consisting of 22 boxers, there were no survivors. Several people, including Tony Tucker, missed the flight and stayed in the United States for various reasons, in Tucker’s case an injury he sustained shortly before the accident. It was at this point that Tucker became religious, believing that God had spared his life for a purpose so that he could become the world heavyweight champion. Shortly thereafter, Tucker turned pro.[7][1][8]

Tucker finished his amateur career with 121 fights and a record of 115-6.

Career[edit]

After turning pro in 1980, Tucker’s early fights were often featured on NBC as part of a collection known as “Tomorrow’s Champions.”

Tucker’s progression through the professional ranks was slow. Prone to injury, he changed managers and coaches several times. Eventually, his father, Bob Tucker, played both roles. After gaining a high profile on his professional debut, Tucker spent most of the 1980s boxing in off-TV fights. He also injured his knee in a fight against Danny Sutton, which caused him to be out for just over a year.

In June 1984, he scored a win by knocking out Eddie “The Animal” Lopez in 9 rounds on the undercard of the Tommy Hearns vs. Roberto Durán bout. It was the first time Lopez had been put down. In September 1984, he followed suit by pointing out Jimmy Young.

In September 1986, Tucker finally landed a big fight against 242-pound James “Broad-Axe” Broad for the USBA belt and a world title. Tucker won unanimously.

IBF Heavyweight Champion[edit]

Home Box Office and Don King Productions orchestrated a heavyweight unification series in 1987, planning among other things a match between reigning IBF champion Michael Spinks and Tucker. Spinks refused to fight Tucker, instead opting for a more lucrative fight with Gerry Cooney. The IBF withdrew Spinks’ championship recognition on February 19 and ordered Tucker (as the IBF No. 1 contender) to play his No. 2 contender, Buster Douglas. Tucker won the fight and the vacant IBF crown via technical knockout in the 10th round.

Tucker vs. Tyson[ edit ]

As the winner of the IBF title, Tucker immediately had to defend his title in a unification match with WBA and WBC champion Mike Tyson in the tournament finals, in which Tucker was a 10-to-1 underdog ] Previously, Tucker was managed by Emmanuel Steward, who received a negotiated percentage of each payday. At that time, a joint venture called Tucker Inc. was formed for the same purpose by its promoters Cedric Kushner (18% total interest) and Josephine Abercrombie with Jeff Levine (also 18%) merging with Dennis Rappaport and Alan Kornberg (13%, ) and finally Emmanuel Steward (6%). His father Bob Tucker also secured a stake in Tucker Inc. (12%)[11]

Prior to the Tyson bout, Tucker was on an eight-year winning streak, his last loss coming in 1979 when he competed in amateurs.

Despite a broken right hand, Tucker faced Tyson on August 1, 1987. Tyson defeated Tucker by unanimous decision to unify the three championship titles, giving Tucker the distinction of having the shortest championship reign in heavyweight division history (64 days). According to HBO Punch Statistics, Tucker landed 174 of 452 punches thrown, while Tyson landed 216 of 412 and actually passed Tucker, who had a range advantage of more than 10 inches (81½” to 71″).

HBO host and major boxer Sugar Ray Leonard said, “What Tucker showed tonight was the fact that he’s a nonconformist. He did what a lot of us thought was impossible and that’s why I respect him so much because he boxed, he picked, he was a very strategic, very tactical, very intelligent fighter.”[1]

Coincidentally, this very scenario unfolded eight years later to give Tucker another title shot, as the WBA would withdraw its championship recognition from George Foreman on March 4, 1995 after Foreman refused to challenge Tucker (who was his designated No. 1 contender ) to compete. Unlike the 1987 scenario, Tucker would not win a championship this time, as he would lose the WBA-mandated match to 2nd-rank contender Bruce Seldon.

comeback [edit]

Tucker returned to boxing in 1989 and was back in Don King’s stable by 1992. He won the NABF belt with a split decision over senior Orlin Norris and successfully defended it against future world champion Oliver McCall, winning another 12-round decision. He ended 1992 with a 6th-round TKO of Frankie Swindell and set himself up for another world title.

By 1993 Tucker had increased his record to 48-1 and in May of that year he challenged Lennox Lewis for the WBC world heavyweight title. Lewis won a 12-round unanimous decision, knocking out Tucker twice (for the first time in his career). It was the first time in 34-year-old Tucker’s career that he was off his feet.

“They tried to force me to fight Tony Tucker. And I remember looking at Tony Tucker and saying, ‘Mom didn’t raise fools. I’m not fighting him.’ And they got the titles. I won’t fight some people. That’s the good reason. I didn’t want to fight him. Too hard.” – George Foreman, on his refusal to fight Tucker.[13]

In 1995, George Foreman, who defeated Michael Moorer in November 1994 to become the oldest heavyweight champion in history, refused to defend his WBA world heavyweight title against Tucker and opted to fight German Axel Schulz. For breaking the rules, WBA officials stripped Foreman of the title. Tucker and Bruce Seldon fought for the vacant WBA belt in April 1995. Seldon won by TKO after 7 rounds when the doctors stopped the fight due to Tucker’s eyes being closed.

Tucker lost his shot in a rematch when he was passed over ten rounds by a newly signed Don King heavyweight boxer, British-Nigerian boxer Henry Akinwande, later that year.

In 1996 he was outpointed by his old rival Orlin Norris. He scored two unremarkable wins in California and traveled to the UK in 1997 to challenge Herbie Hide for the vacant WBO title. Tucker was dropped three times and eliminated in round 2.

In 1998, Tucker challenged John Ruiz for his NABF belt. Despite a big 6th lap where he got Ruiz in trouble, Tucker was eventually stopped on the 11th lap.

He came back in May to take out journeyman Billy Wright in one round, but later had his license revoked due to medical concerns about Tucker’s eyesight.
