Raelyn Nelson Follows In Papa Willie’s Footsteps – Gainesville Downtown
Willie Nelson’s grandson was performing with his band Thursday night at High Dive, but his music style is more rock and roll than country.
(Note: We apologize if some of the language in this article is offensive to readers.)
It’s hard to interview Raelyn Nelson about her music without the conversation going away from her grandfather. That will surely happen when you are the oldest grandson of the legendary Willie Nelson.
And he’s more okay with that. In fact, he can’t praise his “Papa Willie” enough.
“I’m so proud of him,” Raelyn said. “I think he’s the most like Jesus who lived in the world after Jesus.”
High praise, really!
Raelyn Nelson, 33, knows that her new career in music is fueled by the encouragement she receives from her 85-year-old grandfather-as well as from a fan base that embraces the Willie Nelson family brand.
On Thursday night, the four -member Raelyn Nelson Band led a show at High Dive, 210 SW 2nd Ave., which also included Gainesville’s own Company Man and Carey Matthews. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the music will start at 9. Tickets are $ 8 in advance at eventbrite.com and Hear Again Records or $ 10 at the door.
As much as Raelyn Nelson respects her beloved grandfather and her music, her band doesn’t necessarily go down the narrow country road.
If Loretta Lynn and Joan Jett had a baby, it would be Raelyn Nelson. ”
– Raelyn Nelson
“It’s more like country/garage rock,” he told gainesvilledowntown.com in a recent interview. “I’m really the country in the band. I write country melodies and my band is a group of rockers and we organize it that way.”
Jonathan Bright is Nelson’s guitar player and musical partner. They wrote songs together and “he forgives me.” In other words, rock and roll is the music where Nelson’s country melodies sing it.
“My favorite description that people have said is Loretta Lynn with a Cheap Trick supporting her,” Nelson said. “It’s kind of like that, but it’s definitely a bit more in-your-face than Loretta.
“She was one of my biggest inspirations,” then added, “If Loretta Lynn and Joan Jett had a child, it would be Raelyn Nelson.”
On their set at High Dive, the Raelyn Nelson Band will play everything, including her new song “Mama Cry.” (“I wrote this with my brother Scout about when we were on vacation with our mom and Scout made her cry.”) Another new song is “Nothing On.” (“It’s about being stuck at home alone when the person you love is with someone else,” she says.)
The band will also play their original songs such as “Do You,” “Moon Song,” “Mason Jar” and “Sweetwater,” but Nelson also enjoys performing several covers of Papa Willie, a cover of Loretta Lynn and – to spice it up. up a bit-some punk-rock cover.
“We want to cover all the bases and make sure everyone is having a good time,” he said.
The Gainesville look is the start of a three-day “mini-tour” in Florida for the Raelyn Nelson Band. They also have shows in Pensacola on Friday and Santa Rosa Beach on Saturday. Nelson said the band deliberately book gigs every other weekend because there his ex-wife has custody of their three children.
You see, Raelyn Nelson is a working mother with an 11 -year -old twin boy and an 8 -year -old daughter.
“We divorced six years ago, but we’re good friends now,” she said. “The kids stay with her every other week. She helps me home-school with them. She’s very supportive.”
He said it’s possible Willie Nelson’s entertainment genes are passed on to his great -grandchildren. Raelyn said one of her sons is quick to make melodies while the other is already an excellent percussionist and teaches himself the piano. Her son is more of an actor/comedian.
“He said he wanted to sing, but he doesn’t do it very often and I think maybe it’s because I do,” Nelson said. “She’s definitely making everyone around her attention to her and make them laugh. It’s like ‘Look at me!’ ”Raelyn Nelson was a teenager when she found out she wanted to pursue music. At 14, he mustered up the courage to ask his famous grandfather for one of his guitars. Instead, he bought it a new Martin. Although his chosen instrument on stage today is the ukulele, Nelson still wrote all of his songs with that precious Martin.
In Jan. 1, 2016, Nelson feared a Martin guitar caught fire when his home in Goodlettsville, Tenn., Caught fire in the middle of the night. He tried to save his children and siblings. There was no time to rescue their belongings.
“Martin was sitting with all the other instruments, and all the other instruments were broken except for that one,” Nelson said. It went through without a scratch. The guitar luthier who inspected it said it didn’t even go through the fire. ”
He added: “The guitar my grandfather gave me when I was 14 is probably the most valuable possession I have other than my children.”
Raelyn Nelson is the daughter of Willie Nelson’s eldest son, the late Billy Nelson. Sadly, she took her own life in 1991 at the age of 33. Raelyn was only 7 years old when her father died, but it still clings to memories about her.
“We’re close,” he said. “One of the first memories I have is of my father and grandfather teaching me to sing ‘Jingle Bells.’ They also taught me ‘On the Road Again’ and ‘All My Ex’s Live in Texas’ when I was 3 or 4. I had a picture in front of the microphone with my dad. ”
Raelyn Nelson said she was in her father’s arms when she first realized her Papa Willie was different from everyone else.
“We were on a show and after the show and Papa Willie was trying to get back on the bus, and there were a lot of people attacking him,” he said. “I felt everything, and I was scared. Dad hugged me tightly because it was dangerous. I was like, ‘I want to go see Papa Willie! Where is he? ’And my father was like,‘ He’s working ’but in a very serious tone. And I remember thinking, ‘This is not normal. It’s weird. ‘”
These days, Raelyn Nelson is responsible for letting die-hard fans know about her famous grandfather. He works from home and responds to emails sent by fans on his willienelson.com website.
He was busier than usual last week after Willie Nelson caught his stomach and took the stage before a concert appearance in Charlotte, N.C.
“He’s doing good, he’s doing good,” Raelyn Nelson said last week. “I just talked to him and he said he was feeling good. He was trying to make the show and didn’t go on. She’s really annoying. ”
Willie Nelson has already scheduled that concert date and has a full tour schedule this summer, including Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Picnic in Austin, Texas. The Raelyn Nelson Band was among those who performed that day.
“It’s so hot and everyone makes funny jokes about the heat,” he said. “It’s so hot but so much fun.”
His band played before thousands at Farm-Aid and opening for Tim McGraw and Rascal Flatts. They recently opened at a main venue in Nashville for the revered punk rock band The Descendents, but Raelyn Nelson said she was also comfortable performing in rock clubs in front of small people.
“You have to do everything,” he said. “The normal show for us is maybe 60 to 100 people. It’s okay because you’re just building your craft and you’re learning who you are as an artist. I’ve started doing this since I stopped caring for my kids, so it’s been five almost six years now that I’ve been actively pursuing music every day.
He didn’t know what to expect on Thursday at the High Dive. He never performed in Gainesville.
“I know Tom Petty is from there. That’s about it, “he said.” I haven’t been there yet. I haven’t even been through. ”
The Raelyn Nelson Band includes Nelson on ukulele, Bright on guitar, Preach Rutherford on bass and Angela Lese Gregory on drums. Their sound resonates with fans of both punk-rock and country music.
“You can put us in a lot of different genres and we’re kind of molded,” he said. “Most of the time people understand it and get it and like it and have fun. It’s really high energy. No sad song. I want to keep people dancing and having fun. I want to leave a fun, party flavor in everyone’s mouth. ”
Regardless of the music the band plays, Nelson said his grandfather fully supports him.
“He told me he was really proud of me and my dad would be really proud of me,” she said. “He always tells me,‘ You’re on a roll. Keep up the good work. ’And he didn’t let me change what I was doing, you know? ‘If someone tries to change what you’re doing, don’t let him do it!’ He was like, ‘Fuck off and do your own thing because what you’re doing is important and what you have to show the world through your band is important and you just stick with your guns.’ Of course he would say that. He went through people trying to change him. ”
Raelyn Nelson thanks her grandfather for being an activist. She and her Aunt Amy started Willie’s Kids, a global initiative to encourage and provide humanities education in the school curriculum through WillieHughNiversity, an online university.
He said his grandfather gave a lot of wisdom to his children, grandchildren and, now, great -grandchildren.
“The No. 1 rule in the family is ‘Don’t be an asshole,'” he said. “The second rule is ‘Don’t be an asshole,’ and the third role is ‘Don’t be a fucking asshole.’ Those were always Nelson family rules and I passed them on to my children.
“If everyone would just follow these three rules, I think the world would be a better place.”

Raelyn Nelson, granddaughter of famed singer, brings ‘countrygarage rock’ to local stage
Journal-News caught up with Raelyn Nelson in a phone interview recently to find out more about her, the band, and what we can expect when she plays at Hamilton. Raelyn also hosts several podcasts, including “Music Is Funny.”
Q: What are some of the things you do right now, in music?
Raelyn Nelson: We’re releasing a new single called “Free.” I wrote this a few years ago, after I got divorced, and I was stuck at home with three small children, two dogs, five cats, two birds, a gerbil and a fish. I sat down and wrote a song called “Free,” because I felt like I was free, even though I was stuck at home with all these animals and kids. So, that song feels right to start the next leg of singles. I’ll release singles moments, and package them on a CD later, after I release some. So, we’re releasing this new single and we’re making a video with a production team and that’s coming out soon.
Q: On your website, you are labeled as “Stone Country/Garage.” Some of your band members have more rock backgrounds and your upbringing is more rooted in the traditional country. How would you describe your sound?
A: Rolling Stone Country said, “Mixing old country and dirty garage rock.” They wrote that when we did our first single, “Brother.” We were also called “Caffeinated Country Punk.” That’s another way they say it, and I’m like, I like that, but it’s hard to label yourself and what you are. So, I want to hear other people’s views about it, because, for me, it’s just me, but my biggest influences are Loretta Lynn, my grandfather (Willie Nelson), and Dolly (Parton,) and all the old country such as Kitty Wells and Tammy Wynette. I was limited to Christian gospel music and old country when I was young. Until I was a teenager I spread into the Top 40, pop, R&B, and rock. My mother listened to nothing but praise and worship music when I was growing up. My dad died when I was little, so praise and worship, old country and my grandfather’s music were the first things I started. So, that’s my feeling. And my band, they grew up doing all sorts of rock, like The Clash and The Ramones, and they introduced me to all of that. Then, once I heard some of those artists, I was like I love The Runaways, I love Joan Jett. So, later in life I came in contact with Joan and Chrissie Hynde, and others. They really gave way for us, but I just wasn’t exposed to them early on.
Q: What do you think was one of the biggest things you learned from your grandfather? And what is the greatest advice he has ever given you?
A: He always says, You’re on a roll. Go on, go on writing. don’t stop. The only way you can’t do it is if you stop or you die, obviously, before you can do it, but just don’t stop. ”People who do it don’t stop, and whatever does it, you’ll know, you’ll know what is the reason. He also taught us that horses are smarter than humans. I try to think of the sayings he said, “A family that smokes together, stays together.” He was the coolest. He is exactly like you want him. I think he is the most like Jesus who walked the earth after Jesus, because he is for everyone. (He stands for) The underdogs. If someone speaks badly about to someone, he would be the first to pop up and make us all feel, and tell us why we should love them.He just had a very Jesus way about him.I remember one story, not the people working ho for him now, but years and years ago, some people worked for him to take merch money and Paul, his drummer, approached “Papa Willie” on the bus, or in the van, or wherever they were and said, this and that left with all the money and I was going to get them… He said I would go to them and we would get our money back, and said “Papa Willie,” “No, they just need it more than we do, let’s let them.” It’s things like that, that he’s done, just out of his actions, which have taught me so much.
Q: Do you have any other musical inspiration in your family?A: My aunt, Amy, and my aunt, Paula, both write and sing music. They are wonderful. My uncle Lukas & Promise of the Real is great. Like a rock and roll church. Then, my Uncle Mike is like psychedelic rock. This is cool. We all have different sounds, and it’s really interesting, because I’m sure it’s all just from the different influences we had growing up and “Papa Willie,” obviously. They were all his children, so I was the only grandchild who played music. They were all my father’s brothers. Paula no longer sings much, she is already doing a radio show on SiriusXM, on the channels “Willie’s Roadhouse,” and “Outlaw Country”. Amy has a band, Folk Uke with Cathy Guthrie, the daughter of Arlo Guthrie, and grandson of Woody Guthrie. Woody wrote “This Land Is Your Land.” Micah Nelson is also doing his own single thing. Check them all out because we all have different sounds, for sure.
Q: What contribution are you expected to make, to music, and do you think you are making a difference?
A: I just want to be genuine, true and not fake. I am a mother. I’m a woman, living in 2022. I’m 37-years-old, and I’m identified as 27. I’m all about honesty, profanity and comedy, and laughter. That’s the kind of impression I want to leave in this world. Musically, it’s the same thing really, pure laughter and happiness. I’m not a fan of ballads … I just want to leave everything up.
