Season 2 episode list
The first season of the American reality competition streaming series The Circle began on January 1, 2020 on Netflix and ended on January 15, 2020. This season was hosted by Michelle Buteau.[1]
Prior to the season, it was announced that players would compete to become the most popular, but would never actually meet. Instead, they would communicate via a specially developed app and be able to present themselves in any way they wanted. Netflix renewed The Circle for a second and third season on March 24, 2020.
On January 15, 2020, the season was won by Joey Sasso, who played the game as himself, and won the associated prize of $100,000. Shubham Goel was second. Sammie Cimarelli won the Fan Favorite Award and $10,000.
format [edit]
The candidates or “players” move into the same apartment building. However, the participants do not meet in person during the competition, as they each live in their own apartment. They communicate solely through their profiles on a specially designed social media app that gives them the ability to represent themselves in any way they choose. Players can thus choose to present themselves as completely different personalities to the other players, a tactic also known as catfishing.[2]
Throughout the series, contestants “rate” each other from first to last. At the end of the reviews, their average ratings are revealed to each other from lowest to highest. Typically, the top two rated players become “influencers” while the remaining players risk being “blocked” by the influencers. Occasionally, however, there can be a twist in the blocking process – varying from immediately blocking the lowest rated players, keeping the identity of the influencers secret, or blocking multiple players at once. Blocked players are eliminated from the game, but have the opportunity to personally meet a player who is still in the game. Then, the day after a suspension, the remaining players are shown a video message to reveal whether they were real or fake.[2]
During the finals, contestants rate each other one last time, with the player with the highest rating winning the game and $100,000.[3] Plus, fans of The Circle can vote for their favorite player. The player with the most votes is designated a fan favorite and receives $10,000.[4][5]

The first eight players were announced on Instagram by The Circle on December 16, 2019.[6][7][8] A total of 13 players were selected from the “20–25 people” cleared to appear on the show, with the remaining people never leaving standby status and not appearing on the show. The five players, who were not announced ahead of the show’s premiere, were revealed when they introduced themselves on screen during an episode.

Code [14] Week 1 1 1 “Hello, Circle” Day 1 January 1, 2020 ( ) 101 The first eight players entered the Mansion and created their profiles. Then a notification informed the players that they can now look at the profiles of the other players. The players immediately had to rate the others from first to seventh place based on their first impressions. Then the Circle Chat opened, where the players could get in touch with each other for the first time. Game (“Ice Breaker”): Players had to answer multiple choice questions on serious and non-serious questions. After everyone answered the question, their decisions were revealed to everyone. The players then had time to discuss the question and their answers. The next day, after several players got acquainted, the ratings were announced. Sammie and Antonio took first and second place respectively, making them the first influencers. Sammie and Antonio immediately had to go to the hangout to determine which of the other players should be banned from The Circle. They decided to block Alana. Alana went to meet one of the players face to face.[15] 2 2 Face-to-Face Days 1-2 January 1, 2020 ( ) 102 Alana visited Sammie’s place because she thought they were close, but Sammie ended up blocking her. Sammie told her that she sounded fake and wasn’t supposed to be like a professional model. The next day, The Circle presented a video message from Alana, revealing that it was real and not catfish. After finding out Alana was real, Antonio Joey confessed to feeling guilty about sending Alana home because of “Mercedeze”/Karyn. Game (“Who Dis?”): One by one, a picture of a celebrity was shown to a player. This player then had to describe the celebrity to the other players. If the other players could guess which celebrity was being described, they got a prize. Since everyone got the celebs right, that night they got a party and were able to add another photo to their profiles. During the party, a new player, Miranda, joined The Circle and created her profile. After creating her profile, she was able to follow the ongoing conversation on The Circle Chat. Then she had to choose a player to send a gift to and chat with privately.[16] 3 3 There’s a Catfish Among Us Days 2-3 January 1, 2020 ( ) 103 Miranda chose Mercedeze/Karyn as she wanted to get to know them more and thought they would connect. All other players were “buffered” until morning, meaning they were unable to access The Circle at all. The next day, the ratings opened with the caveat that Miranda could not rate or be rated as she was the new player. Game (“Ask Me Anything”): One at a time, each player could anonymously ask another player a question in The Circle Chat. This question must be answered publicly. After the question was answered, all players were able to respond, allowing them to share their thoughts on the question and the answer. The ratings were announced and Chris and Shubham, who shared first place, became influencers.[17] 4 4 “Planting Doubt” Days 3-4 January 1, 2020 ( ) 104 Chris and Shubham had to make their way to the hangout immediately, where they had to decide which of the remaining players to block. They decided to block Antonio as nobody knew him well. Antonio decided to visit “Mercedeze” / Karyn’s apartment where he discovered Karyn was playing as Catfish. The next day, The Circle published a farewell message from Antonio. Game (“Nailed It / Failed It”): Players were shown a photo of a cake and given 30 minutes to create it from scratch. Then everyone voted on which cake looked the best. The player who created the cake with the most likes received a special prize. Miranda won and posted a short video on her profile. This game is based on the other Netflix series Nailed It!. Shortly thereafter, Alex entered The Circle as a catfish named Adam.[18] Week 2 5 5 “Sliding in DMs” Days 4-5 January 8, 2020 ( ) 105 “Adam”/Alex was given the opportunity to go out to dinner with one of the players. To help him with his decision, he was able to chat with three players of his choice. He chose “Mercedeze”/Karyn, “Rebecca”/Seaburn and Sammie. Alex decided to have dinner with “Rebecca”/Seaburn. He also sent along a giant teddy bear after The Circle asked him to include a gift as part of the date. Then the ratings opened and “Adam”/Alex was removed from the rating. Game (“Hashtag This”): Each player can post a new photo on their profile. Then all players chose a hashtag that matched the photo. During the game, many players accused “Mercedeze”/Karyn of being a catfish.[19] 6 6 Anonymous Trolling Days 5-6 January 8, 2020 ( ) 106 reviews were posted and Shubham and Sammie, who placed first and second respectively, became influencers. Shubham and Sammie decided to block Mercedeze/Karyn. Karyn decides to visit Chris’ apartment and reveals that she was a catfish. During the next day’s video, she reveals her true identity to everyone. Then Bill and Sean joined The Circle.[20] 7 7 Select Teams Days 6-7 January 8, 2020 ( ) 107 Bill and Sean created their profiles, with Sean using a friend’s photos. Game (“Trivia Night”): The two new players, Bill and Sean, were assigned to choose two teams for a trivia night. Bill chose Chris, “Rebecca”/Seaburn and Shubham; Sean chose Sammie, Joey, “Adam”/Alex and Miranda. After Sean’s team won, each team member received a video message from their family. The judging opened soon after, and Bill and Sean were exempted from judging. Joey and Shubham became influencers after taking first and second place respectively. The influencers came to the hangout but weren’t allowed to discuss who to block. Instead, the influencers were allowed to save two players each. The unsaved player has been banned.[21] 8 8 “The player I’m rescuing is…” Days 7-8 January 8, 2020 ( ) 108 Sammie, “Rebecca”/Seaburn, Chris, and “Adam”/Alex were saved meaning Miranda was blocked. She decided to visit Joey’s apartment where they kissed. Overnight Ed and Tammy joined The Circle and starred together as “Ed”. Game (“Portrait Mode”): Each player was given painting supplies, a canvas, and a photo of a player to paint however they wanted. Then, after 30 minutes, their finished paintings were shared on The Circle. Sean, who was beginning to feel bad about using photos that weren’t hers, was reinforced by the game. She created a group chat with Chris, Sammie, and “Rebecca”/Seaburn and told them she wasn’t using her own photos. She then asked The Circle to send them a picture of herself.[22] Week 3 9 9 Instant Block Days 8-9 January 15, 2020 ( ) 109 Sean sent a real photo of himself to Chris, Sammie, and “Rebecca”/Seaburn. The ratings soon opened up and “Ed”/Ed&Tammy were removed from the rating. The ratings were announced immediately afterwards. The least popular player was automatically banned. After Bill was blocked, the top two rated players, “Rebecca”/Seaburn and Shubham, became influencers and had to block another player. They decided to block “Adam”/Alex. Bill didn’t get a chance to visit anyone face to face, but “Adam”/Alex went to “Rebecca”/Seaburn’s apartment where they both found out they were fishing for catfish. The next day, Sean changed all the pictures on her profile to her real photos. Then the videos of Bill and “Adam”/Alex were posted to the newsfeed when they found out that “Adam”/Alex was a catfish.[23] 10 10 Declare Your Rival Days 9-10 January 15, 2020 ( ) 110 Game (State Your Case): All players had to explain why they should win The Circle over their biggest rival. After presenting their case, their “rival” was able to provide a response statement. Ratings were opened but players were told the ratings would not be disclosed. The first-placed player became the “super influencer” and made the sole decision on who to block. Joey turned super influencer had to visit the home of the player he wanted to block. He was visiting Sean’s apartment, which meant it was blocked. Sean’s video was posted to the newsfeed.[24] 11 11 “The Last Rating” Days 10-12 January 15, 2020 ( ) 111 Game (“Most Likely”): Players were given a “Most Likely” statement, which players would have to answer with the name of a player they believe that he would do it fits the statement best. The replies were all sent to The Circle Chat so nobody’s replies could be hidden. The ratings were then opened as the final rating of The Circle. However, what players were not told was that the player with the lowest rating would be banned immediately after the ratings. “Ed”/Ed&Tammy were rated the lowest, meaning they were blocked. They visited Sammie’s apartment. Each of the remaining players who had not previously received a message from home (Chris, “Rebecca”/Seaburn, and Shubham) received one. As part of finals night, the players all went into one room to meet face-to-face for the first time in the entire game.[25] 12 12 “Finals” Day 12 January 15, 2020 ( ) 112 “Rebecca”/Seaburn entered the room and revealed to Shubham that he was a catfish. Then all the other players stepped in and found out as well. On finals night, Michelle Buteau spoke to the suspended players before announcing the final ratings. Joey Sasso took first place and became the winner of The Circle. Shubham was second, Sammie third, Chris fourth and “Rebecca”/Seaburn fifth.[26]
production [edit]
Development [edit]
The UK version of the show premiered in 2018 and was renewed for its second season a few months after the end of the first season. After the first season was Channel 4’s “youngest profiling” show in six years, according to British TV industry magazine Broadcast, talks about international versions began.[8] On October 8, 2018, Netflix announced its partnership with All3Media to create three international versions of The Circle on Netflix, including the American version. Brandon Reigg, vice principal of unscripted content at Netflix, said, “We believe the combination of modern social media interaction and competition will captivate Netflix members around the world in multiple languages, and we’re excited to partner with.” Studio Lambert and Motion are producing these three new local versions.”[29]
casting [edit]
On April 11, 2019, casting for the first season opened via an online website.[30]
In an interview with Variety, Studio Lambert executive producer Tim Harcourt explained that The Circle’s format and premise allowed the casting team to look for all kinds of people. He noted how casting differed from casts on shows like Real Housewives or Jersey Shore and that those shows were “all a bunch of pretty similar characters.”[9] He explained that there was no permanent cast for the show until it was over. The first eight players to compete were all predetermined and planned, but everything after that was sheer luck for whoever jumped in. Harcourt explained that the production team would decide who was the right one based on who just left the game, acknowledging that with thirteen contestants not all possible players end up on the show at all.
filming [edit]
In October 2019, it was reported that filming had wrapped. All filming was conducted in August 2019 ahead of the UK version’s second season in September 2019[31] and was completed in fifteen days.[9] It was also reported that the American version was filmed in Salford, England using the same apartment building used in the second season of the UK version.[32] Attempts to disguise the filming location from appearing to be in the United States were evident, including overhead shots of the cities of Chicago and Milwaukee throughout the show, as well as aerial shots of the UK reversed so the cars are on the US appear to be driving on the right side of the road.[33][34]
According to contestant Joey Sasso, filming for the show took about a month. The participants’ homes were partially brightly lit so that the cameras could record them, but also to disorient the players’ perception of time; Sasso stated that they often had no idea what day or what time of day it was, and he had made a habit of wearing sunglasses indoors to cut the glare from the lights, which had been mistaken as a fashion statement by fans of the show . Participants were given a few minutes each day to spend on the roof of the apartment complex.[35]
release [edit]
A trailer for the American version was released on December 10, 2019, stating that the premiere date is January 1, 2020 and the price is $100,000.[36] On December 29, The New York Times announced that 12 episodes would air from January 1-15, with four episodes released each Wednesday as part of the “three-week event.”[8] On December 30, 2019, to get more people interested in The Circle, Netflix released a 30-minute snippet of the hour-long first episode of the season for free on its YouTube channel.[12] Then, beginning January 1 and continuing through January 15, Netflix dropped four episodes each week on Wednesdays.[8]
Fan Favorite Voice [ edit ]
On January 8, 2020, The Circle announced via Twitter and Instagram that voting for the Fan Favorite Award had opened. The player who received the most votes would win $10,000.[4][5] Voting opened at midnight on January 8th, 2020 PST and lasted until midnight on January 17th. The winner of the fan favorites vote was announced on Instagram by The Circle on January 17 as Sammie Cimarelli[37][38].[39]

Reception [edit]
The Circle received positive reviews from critics. On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the season has an 80% approval rating with an average rating of 6 out of 10, based on 15 reviews.[40] The circle also became a topic of discussion in the sixth episode of I Like to Watch, where drag queens Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamolodchikova reacted to the first episode. Due to positive reviews and large viewership, Netflix renewed The Circle for a second and third season on March 24, 2020.[41][42]
When the show aired, it was well received. Vulture’s Megh Wright said The Circle is a “fascinating series” that “brutally reflects how fragmented we are in trying to connect today.”[43] Wired’s Kate Knibbs called it “the best TV show over the internet, which “actually takes its audience’s seats and dramatizes the experience of online social interactions in all its ebb and flow.”[44] The show was also praised for its diverse cast and personalities. According to Etan Smallman of The New York Times, this type of diversity is what makes The Circle so unique among other reality TV shows.[8]
Meanwhile, Fortune’s Isaac Feldberg urged readers to skip The Circle because of “the aggressively irritating manner in which the series has been put together.” She comments on how common it is to “develop entire relationships through purely digital interactions,” and that is what The Circle seeks to explore.[46]
Nev Schulman, host and executive producer of Catfish: The TV Show, criticized The Circle in an interview with People. He said if you remove the realistic circumstances and realistic people with normal personalities, it’s less entertaining than realism. He also expressed his disappointment at the use of the word “catfish”; He cites the definition as “a complicated person who, for a variety of reasons and personal struggles, has found themselves profiling different truthfulnesses or truths to explore, interact with, and discover themselves” while players on The Circle use it to simply call someone a liar. Despite these statements, he admits that he still watches and enjoys the show.[47]
Vox’s Aja Romano praised The Circle for embracing inauthenticity as part of social media and human nature as a whole. Likening The Circle to a microcosm of social media, she says, “Rather than treat ‘being wrong on the internet’ as a shocking betrayal, The Circle embraces it as something we all do in ways big and small, often to make friends and blending in.” She also praises the cast. She mentions how the cast often shares deeply personal things, including through the anonymity of The Circle. Romano states that the cast has developed character arcs and the production team could get away with creating a narrative to create structure.
