National Coming Out Day 37 celebrities who’ve come out this year

Since last National Coming Out Day, dozens of celebrities have stopped, taken a deep breath, and revealed to the world that they are gay, bisexual, lesbian, transgender, queer, non-binary, pansexual — and even in one controversial case, twin spirit.

From singers and politicians to sports stars and Hollywood’s brightest, the last 12 months have shown if anyone needs a reminder that anyone can be LGBT+.

As we look forward to National Coming Out Day on Thursday (October 11), let’s celebrate the icons who raised their heads above the parapet to represent the community – starting with some amazing musicians.

The Dirty Computer singer came out as a “queer black woman” in April after years of speculation, revealing that she “has been in relationships with both men and women.”

Monáe explained that she first identified as bisexual, “but later I read about pansexuality and I said, ‘Oh, those are things I identify with, too.’

“I’m open to learning more about who I am.”

The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer, a longtime LGBT+ advocate, revealed last year that she’s open to dating women, saying, “It’s always been how I felt.”

Lovato then explained more about how she views her sexuality in March, saying, “I’m very fluid and I think love is love.

“You can find it in any gender. I like the freedom to flirt with whoever I want.”

The panic! at the Disco frontman revealed in July that he was pansexual and performed publicly alongside Monáe in his early 30s.

The emo-rock singer, who also donated $1 million to help LGBT kids in US schools this year, said they’re “just people I’m attracted to.”

He continued, “I guess you could call me pansexual because I really don’t care. When a person is great, a person is great. I just like good people when the heart is in the right place.”

Coming out can be difficult – and so can labels. When the “I’m Yours” singer revealed in July that he’s enjoyed having sexual experiences with men in the past, he defined himself as two souls.

This term, used by Native American and First Nations peoples to represent those who possess both male and female spirits and may encompass sexual, gender, and/or spiritual identities, has drawn backlash.

Still, it’s good that the 41-year-old musician has felt comfortable going public with his sexual orientation.

The US singer came out on Twitter in April and wrote: “I’m queer. Not bi, not straight.

“I’m attracted to women, men, REALLY queer men, non-binary people, intersex people, trans people.”

The lead singer of rock band Say Anything also came out as queer, making the announcement in an emotional letter that also revealed the group was disbanding.

Under the caption “GAY STUFF,” Bemis, 34, wrote: “I’ve always been bi-ish or queer or a straight guy who can also be into boys.

“I’ve always talked or joked about it with my friends and found it blatantly clear that it was me.”

The Finnish singer and Eurovision 2018 star came out to PinkNews in March, saying: “I’m very proud to be a lesbian and I feel very lesbian, absolutely.”

She said she’s fortunate to never have struggled with her sexual identity, saying, “My sexuality has never been an issue.”

The British musician – who hit number one in more than 20 countries as the lead in Clean Bandit’s hit “Rockabye” – has spoken openly about her sexuality following the release of her debut album, Speak Your Mind.

She said: “I’ve never been attracted to just men. I’ve never been only attracted to women. I’ve never felt the need to tell anyone I’m bisexual.

“I don’t feel like who I am. I’m just attracted to someone I like. I honestly feel like everyone is like that.”

Lorde’s sister Indy Yelich-O’Connor announced in May that she is bisexual.

The 19-year-old author took to Twitter to share the news and kept things short and sweet by simply writing, “Plot twist (I like boys and girls)”.

The teen sister of the global singing sensation then screengrabbed the tweet and shared it via an Instagram story, making sure all her followers were up to date on her sexuality.

The British model, actor and Instagram star was one of many celebrities who decided to appear in a heartfelt YouTube video this year.

The actor, who lives in Los Angeles and has had small roles on Hollyoaks, Coronation Street and Shameless, decided to share his sexuality to inspire others who may be struggling to come to terms with their LGBT+ status.

In the video, Hodgson said, “I wanted to tell everyone that I’m gay and while that doesn’t change anything for me and hopefully not for you, I just thought it’s a really important thing to share with everyone.”

He added: “I wanted to make this video too because when I think of all the kids out there who are being bullied or are really struggling with their sexuality, even teenagers or adults, I just want you to know that you they are not alone.”

Another model, actor and Instagram celebrity to come out this year was Derek Chadwick, who made the announcement in July and explained that his parents were “not very accepting” when he first told them he was gay — and that he hoped that coming out would help others.

“Coming out in this way allows me to use the privilege I have to help other people who don’t have that,” added the Scream Queens actor.

Andrea Russett came out to her 7.5 million Twitter followers and four million Instagram fans last month, the day before Bi Visibility Day, because, she said, her best friend Sandra Poenar told her she believed that queer people go to hell.

“I came out as bisexual to Sandra four years ago. (Surprise! Yeah. Not exactly how I planned to come out publicly, but it’s not happening I guess),” she wrote in a lengthy social media post.

She added that she wanted to say, “Anyone who is struggling with something similar in their life, you are not alone.

“You are no less a person because you choose to love.”

The YouTuber, who has more than 1.5 million subscribers, came out with a spectacular video in November 2017 that has had around four million views so far.

She told fans her sexuality is something she’s had a hard time speaking up with people close to her, which leaves her depressed.

But after embarking on a personal journey, she posed in front of her rainbow-covered home and told her audience, “I’m Elle Mills and I’m bisexual.”

Athletes from scuba diving, auto racing, swimming, squash, golf and soccer took the bold step of showing the world their true colors this year.

One of those stars was Robert Páez, a 23-year-old Olympic jumper from Venezuela, who published an inspirational essay about celebrating “who he really is.”

He said he was “ashamed at times to go out in society” because he was who he was — but no more.

The racing legend and three-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner is a legendary endurance racer who has won the Le Mans 24 Hours for three decades – 1977, 1983 and 1994.

The racer, whose sexuality has been an open secret in sporting circles for some time, publicly came out as gay at the age of 69 before his autobiography was published.

Speaking of helping a suicidal student in 2012, he explained, “I figured if my voice is strong enough to help one kid, maybe it’ll help two kids, or five, or a hundred.”

The footballer, who plays for Major League Soccer’s Minnesota United, broke a major barrier in June when he came out as gay.

Martin wrote a statement on his Twitter account, which read, “June is Pride month and I’m proud to play for Pride and play as an out gay man.”

The 23-year-old added: “As we celebrate Pride Night, I want to thank my teammates for their unconditional support for who I am.

“Considering who I am, I want to encourage others who play sports, whether professionally or otherwise, to trust that the sport welcomes them wholeheartedly.”

Harrity, who has twice won the US Nationals title, became the first openly gay man to top squash in April.

In a post on social media, the 27-year-old athlete wrote: “To everyone I know and to everyone who knows me, I have something I can finally get rid of.

“I’m gay and ready to live my life as an openly gay man. I decided to come out because I’m convinced that I can only be really happy if everyone knows that about me.”

DeVine, a US national team swimmer, came out as gay last month and admitted coming out was “really tough” for him and he was afraid of how his team would react.

He broke the ice by first telling a former teammate who he said had “done a lot for him and was really there for me as a friend.”

And DeVine soon found that his fears about coming out to his teammates were unfounded as everyone around him reacted positively to the news.

In September, Fujikawa became the first male professional golfer to come out as gay and said he hopes his story will help others in the LGBT+ community.

The American athlete from Hawaii posted a photo of himself to Instagram on World Suicide Prevention Day, along with a caption explaining why he decided to go public with his sexuality.

“Well… I’m gay. Many of you may already have known this,” he wrote.

“I don’t expect everyone to understand or accept me. But please be so kind as not to impose your beliefs on me or anyone in the LGBTQ community.

“I hope this post will inspire each and every one of you to be more empathetic and loving with one another.”

At the age of 47, the former world champion and Olympic swimmer confirmed he was gay.

The British athlete said: “I’ve gotten really good at telling half-truths. I have supported the Terence Higgins Trust, Stonewall and Ben Cohen’s Stand Up to Bullying campaign.

“But I’ve always done it under the radar.”

He added: “I’ve lived an openly gay life with my friends and family. But I always hid it as a swimmer.”

The Thor: Ragnarok actress spoke publicly about her sexuality for the first time in June.

Thompson, best known for her performances in the dystopian drama Westworld and for her role as the explicitly bisexual heroine Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok, said: “I can take things for granted because of my family – they’re so free and you can be everything you want to be.

“I’m attracted to both men and women. If I bring home a woman, [or] a man, we don’t even have to discuss it.”

The 19-year-old, who made her name on The Hunger Games and uses gender-neutral she/they pronouns, previously came out as queer and – in 2016 – bisexual.

But in an interview with lesbian pop singer King Princess — real name Mikaela Straus — in June, they said, “*insert Ellen DeGeneres’ TIME Magazine cover squat and big smile* Yes, I’m gay.”

The actor, who has since starred in hit film The Hate U Give, added, “I’m grateful for how being gay has given me this ability to experience love and sex, and therefore life, in a full and infinite way, and to to understand. ”

In July, at the age of 23, the Arrow and Scream actor revealed they are non-binary.

Taylor-Klaus came out as gay in 2016 by tweeting, “Hi my name is Bex and yes the rumors are true I’m gay.”

And her latest announcement was made with similar nonchalance, with Taylor-Klaus – who is a series regular on Netflix Voltron: Legendary Defender – tweeting it in the same vein.

They wrote: “I came out as trans nonbinary to a room full of people today. I guess it’s time for me to do this too…

“Hi. I’m Bex and the rumors are true. I’m thrilled.”

The actor, who rose to fame in the Disney Channel film series Teen Beach, came out as gay in August while revealing he was in a long-term relationship with screenwriter Blake Knight.

Prior to the release of his film, Reach, he wrote on Instagram that he was “personally involved with suicide in my own family [and] intense bullying in high school.”

He added that “Myself and the man with whom I have been in a long-term relationship (@hrhblakeknight) have both experienced shootings in our hometown school system and witnessed the heartache that follows such tragic events in the affected communities occurs. ”

The star and co-creator of comedy series Broad City came out in April.

While promoting 6 Balloons, her Netflix film starring Dave Franco, she said, “I kind of go both ways; I date men and women. They need to be fun and do something they love.

“I don’t know — I’ve never really been interviewed on the subject.”

24-year-old musician and Disney actress Alyson Stoner came out as bisexual in March.

The star, best known for her roles in Cheaper by the Dozen and Zack & Cody’s Suite, opened up about her sexuality and struggle with religion in an emotional essay for Teen Vogue.

She wrote: “I, Alyson, am attracted to men, women and people who identify in a different way.

“I can love people of any gender identity and expression. It is the soul that captivates me.”

“It’s the love we can build and the kindness we can bring to the world by supporting each other on the best journeys,” she added.

The Glee actor appeared to take to Instagram in March when he posted an image of a photo of a man’s hand on another male hand, with an emoji performing the “I love you” hand gesture in ASL.

The next month, he made his alleged relationship with fellow actor Austin McKenzie official on Instagram, posting several photos of the happy couple embracing.

The pair both starred in When We Rise, a 2017 TV miniseries created by Dustin Lance Black that tells the story of the fight for LGBT equality in the United States.

The Gotham star first spoke publicly about his sexuality in March while starring in a drama set during the AIDS crisis.

Smith, best known for playing Edward Nygma, aka supervillain The Riddler, on Fox’s popular Batman prequel TV series, revealed that he identifies as queer.

The actor added that his own family responded with “a lot of love” when he came out.

The actress, best known for her TV roles on Glee, Champions and Jessie, came out as transgender in a powerful essay for Time magazine.

Totah, 17, said she was “grateful” for the roles she’s played over the years but regrets allowing herself to be known as a gay man rather than a transgender woman.

She also spoke about her faith, saying she “had come to believe that God made me transgender,” adding that she plans to “fight for those roles” when it comes to auditioning for female roles .

After all, she added, “It’s a clean slate — and a new world.”

True Blood actress Rutina Wesley came out quietly in November 2017 as she announced their engagement.

The star, who played Tara Thornton on the cult vampire show and has also appeared in Queen Sugar, uploaded a series of Instagram photos revealing her engagement to Shonda, a New Orleans chef.

She dubbed her new fiancée the “light of my life” and “fire in my loins” in the posts, adding hashtags that read, “More and more, never less. I said yes” and “I love you more than words.”

The Steven Universe creator came out as non-binary in July.

The 31-year-old is the brains behind the popular American animated series, which has garnered repeated praise for its portrayal of queer characters including lesbians Ruby and Sapphire, who got engaged earlier this year.

Sugar, who previously worked on Adventure Time and has been nominated for a five-time Primetime Emmy Award, revealed, “One of the things that’s really important to me about the show is that the Gems are all non-binary women.

“They are very specific and come from a world where they don’t really have a frame of reference. They are coded female, which is very important.”

Sugar added, “I’m also a non-binary woman, which has been really great to express myself through these characters because that’s how I’ve felt my entire life.”

We move from one kind of brilliant writer to another and Ronan Farrow’s decision in April to go public.

The influential journalist, who played a key role in debunking Harvey Weinstein, came out quietly while accepting an award from the Point Foundation, which supports LGBTQ students.

The former NBC News personality, the son of Mia Farrow and director Woody Allen, told the audience: “Every single LGBT person who has to go through a process of accepting themselves and turning rejection and isolation into strength is richer and more creative and more determined for this journey.”

The author and co-founder of The Toast came out in February after realizing his identity while researching his latest book, The Merry Spinster.

“Turns out I’m trans!” said Ortberg, who also wrote lyrics by Jane Eyre.

“I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about it and going to support groups, and I’ve started the medical transition after an initial ‘trial period’ to see how I feel about it.”

He added: “I had to realize that the feelings I had before weren’t the whole story.

“How do I create a vision for the future that doesn’t negate the past? It was wild that I became aware of all of this in the middle of writing the book.”

In addition to culturally important figures, the past year has also been notable for political figures who have taken the bold step of revealing their true identities.

One of them was Huanwu, the grandson of Singapore’s first prime minister, who sparked celebrations in the country — where homosexuality is illegal — when he came out as gay in July.

Huanwu, who is also the nephew of current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, broke the news about Out in Singapore, an exhibition for “LGBTQ people who want to come out to family, friends and their peers in the community”.

Huanwu, 31, changed his Facebook profile picture to a photo of him and Yirui Heng, a 27-year-old veterinarian, after they were pictured together at the exhibition.

The Danish cabinet minister announced he is bisexual after years of speculation.

Ahlers, since May Minister for Science, Technology, Information and Higher Education,

said he came out publicly at the age of 42 because his position as a minister meant he could not hide anything about himself.

“When people mention they’ve heard a rumor, I tell them it’s not a rumor because it doesn’t contain an element of fiction,” he said.

“But the truth is also that I’ve come to the conclusion that I like both men and women.”

The French cabinet minister, who serves as secretary of state for the digital sector, came out at 33 on the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

The En Marche politician wrote: “Homophobia is a disease that is eating away at society, invading high schools and poisoning families and lost friends.

“Worse, it haunts gay people’s minds, sometimes forcing us to hide and lie to avoid hate and live.”

Jones, who sits in the Florida House of Representatives, came out as gay nearly six years after his first election.

In doing so, the politician became the first openly gay African-American congressman in Florida.

He revealed he knew he was gay since kindergarten but only spoke openly about his sexuality about five years ago when he decided to tell his family.

Jones came out by allowing the political director of Equality Florida to put him on a list of recommendations of openly gay candidates, saying he wasn’t sure at first if it was the best “coming out party” before he decided to keep going.

And here’s one more for this retrospective that was too ambiguous to include as a definitive coming-out moment but too amazing to leave out entirely.

That’s right, the one and only Harry Styles caused a flurry of fanfare from fans earlier this year after the lyrics to his new song appeared to reveal he was queer.

The former One Direction singer had previously opened up about his sexuality, saying last year that he “never felt the need” to label himself.

But Styles’ lyrics for his song “Medicine” had his fans exploding with excitement and hailing him as a bi-icon, as the 24-year-old star sang: “The boys and the girls are here, I’m doing with ’em rum. and I agree with that.”

He followed those sensational lines by singing, “I’m coming down, I’ve found out I kinda like it, and when I sleep I’ll dream of how you tasted.”
