Jennifer Apreciada Gonçalves de Maia (born October 6, 1988)[1] is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist. Demian Maia (born November 6, 1977) is a Brazilian professional submission grappler and mixed martial artist. He competed in both the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight and middleweight divisions. Maia is considered one of the greatest grapplers in MMA history.[5] He has competed in two UFC title fights, losing to Anderson Silva for the UFC Middleweight Championship in 2010 and to Tyron Woodley for the UFC Welterweight Championship in 2017.

Maia was born in São Paulo, Brazil and trained in judo as a child. He started at the age of four and trained until he was six. When he became a teenager, he also began studying kung fu and karate. At nineteen, Maia was introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by his cousin. After four years and seven months, Demian received his black belt.[6] Demian Maia finished college and graduated with a degree in journalism.[7] He is currently a fifth degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and has won several major tournaments under Team Brasa. Maia has previously cited a three-hour private lesson he once took with Rickson Gracie as one of the moments that most profoundly influenced and completely changed his approach to jiu-jitsu.[8]
He won the 77-87 kg weight class at the 2007 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship, defeating Yushin Okami, Rafael Lovato and Tarsis Humphres before hitting Flavio Almeida with the armlock in the final. He also won the 2007 Super Challenge under 83 kg belt, defeating Vitelmo Kubis Bandeira by rear naked choke and Gustavo Machado by a judges decision before defeating Fabio Negao by guillotine choke in the final. After his ADCC championship in 2007, Maia released an instructional DVD series titled The Science of Jiu-Jitsu I & II in association with World Martial Arts company.
Maia’s grappling skills are so highly regarded among MMA fighters that well-known heavyweight submission artist and fellow BJJ black belt Frank Mir hired him as his head jiu-jitsu coach ahead of his UFC 100 title fight with Brock Lesnar. Maia credits Mir with taking Mir’s jiu-jitsu skills to various levels, saying “I thought I was really good at it until I started rolling with him.”[9]
Maia has also twice defeated senior UFC Middleweight and multiple Mundial Champion Ronaldo “Jacaré” Souza, as well as former UFC Heavyweight title challenger and Mundial Champion Gabriel Gonzaga in grappling competition.

Early career[edit]
On September 21, 2001 he fought Raul Sosa at Tormenta en el Ring in Caracas, Venezuela. Maia defeated Sosa by TKO in just 48 seconds to win his MMA debut. After a four-year hiatus, he returned to star Lukasz Chewlicki via armbar at The Cage Vol. 4 – Redemption. Maia next competed in Super Challenge 1 and claimed three wins in one night to be crowned the 2007 Super Challenge Champion in the under 83kg class. In 2007 he competed in GFC – Evolution against Ryan Stout. Early in the first round, Stout’s shoulder popped out of its socket after Maia flipped him into a mount, resulting in an injury-related stoppage.
Ultimate Fighting Championship[edit]
On August 7, 2007, it was reported that Maia had signed a contract with the UFC.[14] He was originally matched against veteran Marvin Eastman, but Eastman withdrew due to eye surgery. Ryan Jensen, who trained with Team Quest, was named as his replacement. The prelim took place on October 20 at UFC 77 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Maia won via rear naked choke in the first round and was awarded the Submission of the Night award, which netted him an additional $40,000.
Maia next fought TUF 3 finalist Ed Herman, another Team Quest fighter, on April 19, 2008 at UFC 83 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Maia defeated Herman by technical submission due to a mounted triangle choke at 2:27 of the second round. He again received Submission of the Night honors for the win, earning him $75,000.
Maia’s third fight was at UFC 87, where he faced fellow Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Jason MacDonald. Both fighters entered the cage after winning back-to-back Submission of the Night honors in the UFC. Maia defeated MacDonald by rear naked choke at 2:44 of the third round, earning $60,000 towards another Submission of the Night bonus. With this award, he became the first UFC fighter to receive three consecutive Submissions of the Night awards. His four consecutive dominant submissions in the UFC have quickly brought his abilities as arguably the best pure grappler in the UFC to the fore.[20]
Maia defeated heavy-handed forward Nate Quarry via a rear naked choke in the first round at UFC 91. After the fight, Maia expressed interest in fighting Michael Bisping next.
Instead, Maia would face standout WEC and future UFC middleweight title contender Chael Sonnen at UFC 95 on February 21, 2009 in London, England. During the match, Maia threw Sonnen over his head with a side drop takedown and brought Sonnen to the ground where Maia immediately made it to the mount. Maia then switched to a triangle choke, forcing Sonnen to tap at 2:24 of the first round. Maia’s next opponent was former title contender Nate Marquardt at UFC 102 on August 29. During an exchange of blows, Maia was KO’d by a straight right hand by Marquardt 21 seconds into the fight, resulting in his first career loss.
Maia faced Dan Miller on February 6, 2010 at UFC 109. Maia won the fight via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28 and 29-28).
Middleweight Championship Fight[edit]
After Vitor Belfort had to pull out of his upcoming match with UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva at UFC 112 due to a shoulder injury sustained in training, Maia was selected to fill the spot and take over from Silva for the belt in what would be UFC’s first -ever open-air event in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.[24]
For the first two rounds, Silva seemed to taunt his opponent while simultaneously throwing quick and accurate shots. However, in the third round, Silva’s pace seemed to change, viewing Maia as the aggressor of the fight while largely circling and taunting his opponent. In the fifth round, Silva’s lack of action prompted referee Dan Miragliotta to warn Silva about his behavior and the crowd began to side with Maia. After 5 rounds, Silva was unanimously declared the winner.
Post title fight[edit]
Maia was then scheduled to fight Alan Belcher on September 15, 2010 at UFC Fight Night 22. However, on August 1, 2010, Belcher retired from the fight after undergoing emergency eye surgery for a detached retina. Belcher stated on his Twitter account that while in Brazil he began to lose sight in his right eye.[27] As a result, Maia was also pulled from the event [28] and faced Mario Miranda on August 28, 2010 at UFC 118. Maia uses double and single leg takedowns and trips to forge into a dominant position, grounding and pounding his opponent while waiting for an opening for a submission. On the ground, Maia prefers to use the rear mount where he looks for a rear naked choke. In the down position, Maia almost exclusively uses single legs to sweep and was able to repeatedly sweep Gunnar Nelson with his single leg. Maia is also confident enough to close the distance and initiate takedowns. To date, Maia has never been submitted in an MMA fight.[83]
Personal life[edit]
Maia’s mother is of Russian descent.[84] He has a wife named Renata who works for a Brazilian magazine.[85] Maia listed UFC Hall of Famer Royce Gracie as his inspiration for starting an MMA career, but lists Royce’s brother Rickson Gracie as his main hero. Demian Maia Receives 5th Degree On His BJJ Black Belt
UFC fighter and 2007 ADCC champion Demian Maia has achieved his fifth degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Maia shared the news on social media, adding that it had been nineteen years since he first received his black belt from Fabio Gurgel.
“Proud of 5o degrees in BJJ. About 19 years ago (dec/2001) I got my black belt from my professor @fabiogurgel. Every day over the years I have tried to do my best to spread this beloved martial art. Fighting, teaching seminars and courses, giving interviews… let’s go to 19 more!!!”
In addition to his ADCC win in 2007, he also won silver at the prestigious tournament two years earlier.
