Danny Trejo

American actor

Danny Trejo (Spanish: [ˈtɾeho]; born May 16, 1944) is an American actor. He has appeared in films including Desperado, Heat, and the From Dusk Till Dawn film series. Along with frequent collaborator and his second cousin Robert Rodriguez, he portrayed the character of Isador “Machete” Cortez, originally developed for the Spy Kids series and later expanded into its own franchise of the same name.

Trejo’s film career began in 1985, when he accidentally landed in the American indie film Runaway Train, where he starred as a boxer for a daily fee of $ 320. She went on to star in many other films, including Desperado, From Dusk till Dawn, Con Air, From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money, From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman’s Daughter, Reindeer Games, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, and Grindhouse. [1]

Early life [edit]

Childhood [edit]

Trejo was born on May 16, 1944, on Temple Street in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, to Mexican-American parents. [2] [3] [4] He was the son of Delores Rivera King [5] and Dionisio “Dan” Trejo (1922–1981), [6] a construction worker. Trejo is the result of an extramarital affair; Delores’s husband was not in the fighting during World War II. [7] Her parents met at a dance hall in Highland Park, Los Angeles in 1943. [8] He had a maternal sister, Dyhan, but Delores did not see him from the age of three and a half until 1965; his father forbade his mother to see him after Trejo sprayed his arm with his care. [7]

Trejo is often abused by his father. Shortly after his birth, Trejo and his family temporarily settled in San Antonio, Texas; they fled to Los Angeles because police were looking for Dionisio for stabbing another man. A year later, they returned to Los Angeles and Trejo’s father surrendered. [8] By 1949, Trejo shared a room with his cousins in their grandmother’s house. [9] Her stepmother was Alice Mendias, “her only source of comfort” when she lived with her father. [10] [11] [12]

Trejo used marijuana, heroin, and cocaine at the ages of 8, 12. [13] [14] [15] Trejo’s uncle Gilbert introduced him to all three and was responsible for Trejo’s overdose in his first heroin repair. [8] When he was 13, he moved to a different neighborhood of Pacoima, Los Angeles, and remembers never experiencing racism while growing up. A few years later, he bought his home when he was young and often lived there. [16]

Life of crime and incarceration [edit]

At the age of seven, Trejo participated in his first drug deal. [17] He was first arrested at age 10, [18] but experienced his first incarceration at Eastlake Juvenile Hall in 1956. [18]

Throughout the 1960s, Trejo’s life largely consisted of intermittent incarcerations in the California prison system. [18] [19] However, reports of his prison chronology are noticeably conflicting; by one account, his last term in custody is said to have ended in 1972, [4] but in reality, Trejo spent time in various juvenile offender camps, [20] including three years in Camp Glenn Rockey, San Dimas for scarring a sailor (he was stabbed in the face with broken glass), [21] [22] followed by numerous prisons in California between 1959 and 1969; “I was in San Quentin, Folsom, Soledad, Vacaville, Susanville, Sierra”. [13]

While making a stint at the Los Angeles County jail in 1961, he met Charles Manson, whom he described as a “dirty, greasy, curly, white boy” who was supposedly a talented hypnotist. [23]

Trejo arrived at San Quentin State Prison in 1966, and his heroin use worsened after a while. [24] Furthermore, he was a debt collector and drug dealer, often participating in or witnessing acts of serious violence, including murder. [25] [26] At the same time, he focused on boxing [24] and became champion in the San Quentin lightweight and welterweight divisions. [4]

As for himself, Trejo suggested that his physical appearance contributed to his continued entry into trouble.[13] [27] In 1968, prison riots broke out during Cinco De Mayo in Soledad. Trejo ended up in solitary confine and faces capital charges, possibly the death penalty, after stoning a guard. In solitude, Trejo found faith [28] [6] and became a member of a 12-step program, first attending an “incident” at age 15, and successfully overcoming his drug addiction. ; recalling in 2011 that he had become sober over the past 42 years. While incarcerated he also earned his high school diploma. [29] [13]

In July 1969, Trejo was released from custody for the last time and returned to Pacoima, Los Angeles, after serving five years of a 10-year prison sentence. [30] [6] Prior to his film career, Trejo worked as a labor foreman for developer Saul Pick, and contributed to the construction of the Cinerama Dome. [31] He was also a gardener and saleswoman; part owner of a lawn care company, and has been an advisor on substance misuse since 1973. [32] [33] [34]

Career [edit]

Film and television [edit]

1980s: Debut in acting [edit]

Trejo worked at Western Pacific Med Corp. in the 1980s, helping them establish and operate sensible homes within the San Fernando Valley. [36] He met a “good -looking tattooed child” at a meeting in such a house, who explained that he worked as an extra filmmaker and paid him $ 50 per day to stand there. Intrigued, Trejo considered it to be an extra film, initially because of the easy money and publicity that could afford his work at Western Pacific Med Corp. Trejo signed with an agent and will provide his details while working on the film sets, in hopes of finding more opportunities to help those in need. One night, Trejo received a call from a teenaged patient, asking for help dealing with cocaine problems on the set of Runaway Train (1985). [37] [4] [38]

While there, Trejo was offered a job in addition to the film’s prison scenes. Edward Bunker, who himself was previously convicted and at the time was a respected crime writer writing the screenplay for the film, identified Trejo, with whom he had been in San Quentin. [4] [38] Remembering Trejo’s boxing skills, Bunker played a key role in securing Trejo as Eric Roberts ’personal boxing trainer and advisor. Trejo was paid between $ 320 and $ 350 per day; “When I got my first salary, I thought they were wrong!” [39] [40] Bunker also convinced director Andrei Konchalovsky to offer Trejo a small acting role, who insisted that Trejo’s personal experiences in incarceration will give authenticity to the prison drama. [41] Following his acting debut, Trejo did not notice being typecast as a prisoner in similar roles in subsequent year; “I didn’t know I was stereotyped. All I knew was I was working.” [42]

Penitentiary III was his first charged duty. While filming he met Anthony Gambino of the Gambino Crime Family; Gambino allegedly had a financial interest in investing and was there to meet the leading man, Leon Isaac Kennedy. Trejo is paid $ 120 cash per day, but the project often goes into overtime; “We piled up money.” [43] In a good month, Trejo took home up to $ 700 in 1989 from being extra alone; however, people often assume he is richer after a few television appearances. Trejo said this worked to his advantage as a drug counselor, however, because clients would recognize him as an actor, therefore greatly appreciate his presence and the humility of his work. [44]

1990s: Blood In, Blood Out and career development [edit]

Trejo made a dozen films in 1990, including Death Wish 4: The Crackdown, and Marked for Death. He enjoyed making Guns, [45] but Erik Estrada accused the cast and crew of being more familiar with Trejo than himself.Trejo said Estrada’s ego was good for him; he believes Estrada arranged for Trejo and a few others to fly coach instead of first class to Hawaii for filmmaking. [46]

In 1991, Edward James Olmos originally offered him the role of Pedro Santana in American Me. [47] Trejo was not impressed with the script and his first meeting with Olmos. Trejo claims that rumors began to circulate within the Mexican Mafia that the script was taking away narrative freedoms. Before Trejo had a chance to attend a second meeting with Olmos, he received a call from Joe ‘Peg Leg’ Morgan, the then -living don of the Mexican Mafia; Morgan approved his choice of role in Blood In, Blood Out instead of American Me. [48] In 2021, Trejo said he believed Olmos had not yet accepted him as a serious actor. [42]

In his experiences with Blood In, Blood Out, Trejo recalled feeling uncomfortable around many of the other actors during rehearsals, as they were more stable. [49] During production in San Quentin, Trejo often flashbacks to his time there; Filming scenes in C550, his former cell, only exacerbated such feelings. [50] Although his earlier works have brought him opportunities, Trejo acknowledges Blood In, Blood Out as bringing him “legitimate, global fame.” [51]

Trejo found a new talent agent with the help of Raymond Cruz. He was first cast in an episode of Baywatch, followed by a part in 1993’s Last Light, Kiefer Sutherland’s directorial debut. [52]

The heat went through two revisions of the script as Trejo read the part. He eventually landed the role, reuniting him with Michael Mann, who directed him in the television miniseries Drug Wars: The Camarena Story a few years before. Mann had first mistaken Trejo for his uncle Gilbert. ; he found the resemblance peculiar, having met Gilbert while filming The Jericho Mile in Folsom in the late 1970s; The production required the cooperation of the inmates, and Gilbert happened to be one of the callers. Trejo’s character in the film was first called ‘Vince’ but was renamed ‘Trejo’ in honor of Gilbert. Filming can be upwards of 17 hours per day, but Trejo said he is grateful for how much he has learned; “Watching De Niro, Kilmer, and Voight, I learned a lot about how they save [their performances] for when it matters.” He remembers being mentored by Robert De Niro, who was a patient and instructive partner on the scene. Trejo and De Niro created the death scene of the former. [53]

In 1996, Trejo was included in the French production Le Jaguar (which is French for The Jaguar) and reunited with Voight for Anaconda, both of which were filmed in Manaus, Brazil. When production for Anaconda moved to Venezuela, Trejo was socializing in his days off. Producers are worried because a possible coup d’état has made parts of the country unsafe to travel; a group of teenagers branched out an AK47 at one point, demanding Trejo’s combat boots. As a result, Trejo said he arranged a higher salary to stay inside his hotel. [54]

Trejo described Con Air in 1997 as a “macho fest from the start” and the cast often flirted with each other. He remembers Nicolas Cage as “cool as hell” and John Cusack as a “kickboxing badass”. Trejo met many of his longtime friends on set, including: John Malkovich, Ving Rhames, Steve Buscemi, and Dave Chappelle. [55]

[57]

By the time of Bubble Boy in 2001, his illness had progressed to the point that most of the cast had noticed his weight loss; Trejo said his previous drug use caught up with him. He described himself as being pale and weak throughout production, and pre-occupied with keeping his diagnosis secret within Hollywood for fear of retaliation. Trejo is “out of it” and has a hard time remembering his lines because of the prescription drug. By the time Spy Kids premiered in September 2002, Trejo had fully recovered. [56] [57]
