James “Jimmie” Neko Suave Ward (born July 18, 1991 in Racine, Wisconsin) is an American football player at the safety position. He plays for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League. He previously played college football for Northern Illinois and was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
Early years and college[edit| edit source ]
Ward was born in Racine, Wisconsin and attended Davidson High School in Mobile, Alabama. In his last season, his team was able to reach the quarterfinals of the championship in Alabama. For his accomplishments, Ward was recognized as his own team’s Defensive MVP. He was rated a two-star recruit. After that he was hardly offered any scholarships and decided to play college football for the Northern Illinois Huskies of Northern Illinois University.[1][2][3]
Ward attended Northern Illinois University from 2010 to 2013. In his freshman season, he played in all 14 games and set a school record with three blocked punts. After the season, the team was recognized as Special Teams Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. In 2011, he was elected to the third-team All-MAC after the season. In the 2012 season, he continued his team with 104 tackles, 14 of which came in the Orange Bowl against Florida State. At the end of the season, he was selected to the First-Team All-MAC for the first time. In 2013, he again led his team with 95 tackles and was again selected to the First-Team All-MAC. Additionally, he was selected to the AP’s Third-Team All-American.[4][5]
Ward was selected as the 30th pick by the San Francisco 49ers as a third safety in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft.[7] On May 22, 2014, he signed a four-year contract with a team option for a fifth year for $7.11 million.[8]
In his freshman season, he was primarily Eric Reid’s backup at the free safety position after he competed for the strong safety position at training camp. Additionally, he also starred as Nickelback. He played in eight games and had 20 tackles and two pass stops.[9]
The following season, Ward was just Eric Reid’s replacement under new head coach Jim Tomsula. He still got more playing time and was able to catch an interception from Jay Cutler and carry it back for a touchdown in the 26-20 win against the Chicago Bears.[10] He finished the season with 57 tackles, six shots and a pick six.
The following season, Ward made a position change to cornerback after former head coach Jim Tomsula was replaced by Chip Kelly. Before the season he was selected as a starter opposite Tramaine Brock.[11] Due to injury, he was only able to play eleven games, but recorded 53 tackles and prevented twelve passes.
On May 1, 2017, the 49ers exercised Ward’s fifth-year contract option. This resulted in a salary of $8.52 million for the 2018 season.[12] At the start of training camp, new defensive coordinator Robert Saleh implements a new defensive system with a Cover 3 as the baseline. Because of the new system, Ward switched his position back to free safety, which allowed him to play three positions under four different head coaches and defensive coordinators in four years in the NFL.[13] He was also plagued by discoveries in the 2017 season, so he could only play seven games.
He only appeared in nine games during the 2018 season before breaking his forearm in the 9:27 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 12 and missing the rest of the season.[14]
Ahead of the 2019 season, Ward and the 49ers agreed to a new one-year, $4.5 million contract.[15] At the end of the regular season, the 49ers won 13 games and were able to reach the number 1 seed in the NFC. This made Ward the NFL playoffs for the first time. After convincing victories against the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers, the 49ers moved into the Super Bowl.[16][17] There, however, they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs by 20:31, although they still led 20:10 in the fourth quarter. On March 24, 2020, Ward renewed his contract for a three-year contract for a total of $28.5 million.[19] In Week 12 of the 2020 season, he caused two fumbles in the 23-20 win over the Los Angeles Rams, both of which were picked up by the 49ers.[20][21] With a record of 6-10, he missed the playoffs with the 49ers.[22]

Ward attended Northern Illinois University from 2010 to 2013. In 2010, Ward played in all 14 games as a true freshman and blocked a school record three punts that year. He also recorded 21 tackles, one forced fumble and one broken pass, and was named Huskies Special Teams Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. In 2011, he appeared in all 14 games and started 12. He was named a third-team All-MAC selection after recording a career-high 100 tackles, 2.5 tackles for losses, one interception, four pass separations, a forced fumble and had recorded a blocked kick. In 2012, he led the Huskies with 104 tackles, including a career 14-high game against Florida State in the Orange Bowl. He also recorded three interceptions while starting 13 games and earned first-team All-MAC honors. In 2013, he led the Huskies in tackles (95), interceptions (7), and pass deflections (12) while earning national recognition as a Third-Team All-American from the Associated Press.[2] He also received first-team All-MAC honors for the second straight season.
Career[edit]
Ward, who hails from northern Illinois, was predicted as a first- or second-round pick by the majority of NFL draft experts and scouts. He received an invite to the NFL’s combine as a top defenseman, but was unable to participate in physical running or jumping exercises after discovering a stress fracture in his foot on the eve of the combine. On March 7, 2014, he elected to attend Pro Day in Northern Illinois, while still injured, and performed all combine drills except for the bench. Scouts and team reps from 30 NFL teams attended Northern Illinois Pro Day while Ward, Jordan Lynch and five other teammates practiced. Ward has participated in five private practice sessions with teams including the Indianapolis Colts and the Minnesota Vikings. He was ranked the top safety candidate in the draft by NFLDraftScout.com and was ranked the third best safety candidate by NFL analyst Mike Mayock and Sports Illustrated.[4][5][6]
The San Francisco 49ers selected Ward in the first round (30th overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft.[8] He was the third safety selected behind Calvin Pryor (18th overall, Jets) and HaHa Clinton-Dix (21st overall, Packers).
Season 2014[edit]
On May 22, 2014, the 49ers signed Ward to a four-year, $7.11 million contract with a $5.30 million guarantee and a $3.49 million signing bonus.
Ward competed with Antoine Bethea and Craig Dahl for the strong starting position to safety throughout training camp. Head coach Jim Harbaugh called Antoine Bethea the strong starting safety early in the season and Ward the spare-free safety for Eric Reid. He was also tasked with Nickel cornerback duties.
Ward made his NFL debut in the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys, making a tackle during their 28-17 away win. In the next game, he accumulated a season-high four solo tackles in a 20-28 loss to the Chicago Bears. The following week against the Arizona Cardinals, Ward recorded two solo tackles and a season-high with two pass deflections in a 14-23 loss. He was unable to play during a Week 7 road loss to the Denver Broncos due to a quad injury. On November 9, 2014, he recorded two combined tackles in a 27–24 away win over the New Orleans Saints. He suffered a foot injury during the game and was placed on injured reserve for the remainder of his rookie season.
Ward finished his rookie year with 20 combined tackles (19 solo) and two pass deflections in eight games.
Season 2015[edit]
Ward returned to the San Francisco 49ers and was again named Eric Reid’s backup free safety under new head coach Jim Tomsula.
Ward made his first NFL start in the season opener against the Minnesota Vikings, recording a tackle in a 20-3 win. In Week 5, he had eight combined tackles during a 27-30 away loss to the New York Giants. In Week 13, Ward made two combined tackles, deflected a pass and for the first time in his career stopped a Jay Cutler pass attempt during a 26-20 away win over the Chicago Bears. He also scored his first NFL touchdown during the game after returning his interception for 29 yards. Two weeks later against the Cincinnati Bengals, Ward made six combined tackles, deflected a pass and made his first NFL sack against Andy Dalton as the 49ers lost 14-24. On January 3, 2016, he amassed a season-high ten combined tackles and defended a pass in a 19–16 overtime win over the St. Louis Rams.
Ward finished his sophomore season with a career-high 57 combined tackles (48 solo), six pass deflections, a sack, an interception and a touchdown in 16 games and eight starts.
Season 2016[edit]
During his first two seasons, Ward was a backup-free security and was assigned to cover the slot. Head coach Chip Kelly was hired to replace Jim Tomsula after the San Francisco 49ers finished the previous season with a 5-11 record. In training camp, Ward was promoted to a full-time cornerback and competed with Kenneth Acker, Dontae Johnson, and Chris Davis for the cornerback job. Ward was named starting cornerback alongside Tramaine Brock to begin the 2016 season.
Ward started the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams and collected three solo tackles and two pass deflections in a 28-0 shutout win. Two weeks later against the Seattle Seahawks, he made a tackle and defended a pass during an 18-37 road loss. Unfortunately, Ward sustained a quadriceps injury during a special team game and was unable to play for weeks 4-6.[15] In Week 10, Ward notched seven solo tackles and a season-high four pass deflections as the 49ers lost on the road to the Arizona Cardinals 20-23. In Week 14 against the New York Jets, Ward had a career game when he recorded a season-high 11 combined tackles, deflected three passes, intercepted a pass attempt from quarterback Bryce Petty, and lost his first sack of the season in 17. 23 overtime.[16] In the next game, Ward recorded two solo tackles during a 13-41 away loss to the Atlanta Falcons. He left the game after suffering a broken collarbone.[17] On December 20, 2016, he was placed on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.[18]
Ward finished his third season with a total of 53 combined tackles (43 solo), a career-high 12 pass deflections, a sack and an interception in 11 games and 10 starts. Head coach Chip Kelly fired after posting a 2:14 season in 2016.[11]
Season 2017[edit]
On May 1, 2017, the 49ers exercised a fifth-year option on Ward’s rookie contract and paid him a salary of $8.52 million for the 2018 season. Early in training camp, new defensive coordinator installed Robert Saleh a cover 3 base defense and chose to return Ward to his original position of free safety. This was his third varied position in four seasons and his fourth head coach and defense coordinator in the same span.[20] Head coach Kyle Shanahan named Ward to starting free safety for the start of the regular season. Ward suffered a hamstring injury and was unable to play in the season opener against the Carolina Panthers and was replaced by Jaquiski Tartt.
On September 17, 2017, Ward made his season debut and recorded five combined tackles and deflected a pass in a 9-12 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The following week, he started as a free safety for the first time and accumulated a season-high seven solo tackles during a narrow 39-41 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. In Week 8, Ward made three combined tackles in a 10-33 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He left the game after suffering a broken forearm. On November 1, 2017, Ward was placed on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.
Ward finished the 2017 season with a total of 32 combined tackles (27 solo) and one pass deflection in six starts and seven games. Pro Football Focus gave him an overall score of 46.9 and ranked him 77th among all qualifying safety’s in 2017.[24]
Season 2018[edit]
In 2018, Ward played in nine games from seven starts and recorded 24 tackles and one forced fumble. During a 27-9 away loss in Week 12 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Ward suffered a fractured forearm. He was placed on injured reserve on November 27, 2018.[26]

On March 13, 2019, Ward signed a one-year, $4.5 million contract extension with the 49ers.

Johnson was born in Dallas and raised in Kingsburg, California. He is the younger brother of Rafer Johnson, a decathlon gold medalist at the 1960 Summer Olympics. Johnson played college football and ran track at UCLA. He won the NCAA 110-meter hurdles championship and was named an All-American in track and field.
Johnson was the sixth player drafted in the 1961 NFL Draft and played for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL) from 1961 to 1976. He was selected as a first-team All-Pro four times and played in five Pro Bowls. His jersey (#37) was finally retired by the 49ers in 1977. Johnson was born in Dallas in 1938.[1] His family moved to central California when Johnson was a boy. He attended Kingsburg High School in Kingsburg, Fresno County.
Johnson’s older brother, Rafer, preceded him as a multisport star at Kingsburgh High School and UCLA, eventually winning the gold medal in the decathlon at the 1960 Summer Olympics.[2][3]

Johnson attended UCLA and played for the UCLA Bruins football team as a fullback and fullback. He totaled 812 yards from scrimmage in 1959 and 1960. Johnson also competed in UCLA track and field, winning the NCAA championship in the 110-meter hurdles and being named an All-American in track and field.[2]
As a student at UCLA, Johnson joined the Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity, where he is recognized as a prominent alumni brother.
NFL career[edit]
Johnson was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round (6th overall) of the 1961 NFL Draft and by the San Diego Chargers in the fourth round (31st overall) of the 1961 AFL Draft. He signed with the 49ers in June 1961.[7] As a rookie, Johnson appeared in 12 games for the 49ers by 1961, playing at the cornerback position and catching five passes for a career-high 116 return yards. He became a wide receiver in 1962 and caught 34 passes for 626 yards and four touchdowns. His most productive game as a wide receiver was against the Detroit Lions, where he caught 11 passes for 181 yards. Earlier this season, he caught a game-winning 80-yard touchdown reception against the Chicago Bears, which was the longest shot on goal in 49ers history at the time. Johnson returned to defense in 1963 and played primarily on safety and cornerback for the remainder of his career. He remained with the 49ers for 16 years through the 1976 season and appeared in 213 NFL games.
During his 16 years in the NFL, Johnson caught 47 passes for 615 return yards and two touchdowns during his NFL career. He was selected as a first-team All-Pro four times: 1969 (AP, UPI), 1970 (AP, NEA, Pro Football Writers, Pro Football Weekly), 1971 (AP, NEA, Pro Football Writers, Pro Football Weekly) and 1972 (AP, NEA, Pro Football Writers, Pro Football Weekly).
