American ice hockey player

hockey player

Joel Farabee (born February 25, 2000) is an American ice hockey left winger who currently plays for the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League (NHL). Farabee was drafted by the Flyers in the first round 14th overall in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

Raised in Cicero, New York, Farabee competed with the Syracuse Nationals, the Buffalo Jr. Sabers and the Selects Hockey Academy at South Kent School. He joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in the United States Hockey League (USHL) before committing to play NCAA Division I ice hockey with the Boston University Terriers men’s ice hockey team. While in college, Farabee ranked second in goals and third in points among rookies while beating the Terriers in goals, points, power play goals, shorthanded goals, game-winning goals, plus-minus, and shots led. In recognition of his efforts, Farabee received the Tim Taylor Award for College Hockey Rookie of the Year, Hockey East Rookie of the Year, and was selected to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team.

Farabee finished his collegiate career on March 25, 2019, signing an entry-level contract with the Flyers and was traded to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms at the start of the season. He made his NHL debut on October 21, 2019 and went on to become the first Flyers player born in the 2000s. By the conclusion of the shortened 2019–20 regular season, Farabee had 21 points in 52 games. He later became the first player born in the 2000s to score a postseason goal in NHL history when he scored during the round robin game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Personal life[edit]

Farabee was born on February 25, 2000[1] to Dave, a business owner and Pam Farabee, a nursing supervisor, in Cicero, New York, the youngest of three boys.[2] Farabee credits his older brothers Jake and Jesse for inspiring his love of hockey: “I’ve always watched them. They were on older teams. You inspired me to reach that level of being a role model for him growing up. Farabee’s grandfather, Joe Klodzen, was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball, who while never making major league appearances did compete in their minor league system. Because his father was born and raised in Philadelphia, Farabee grew up a fan of Philly sports teams, including the Philadelphia Eagles.

Player career[ edit ]

amateur [edit]

As a child, Farabee competed with the Syracuse Nationals at the Bell Capital Cup in Ottawa before playing above his year level with the Buffalo Jr. Sabers at the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. At the Bell Capital Cup, he led the team with six goals and one power play point.[7] In the ninth grade, when Farabee was recruited to play junior hockey at South Kent School’s Selects Hockey Academy, his family began to take his future career in hockey seriously. He played on the SASKS under-16 national team before joining the USA Hockey National Team Development Program and competing in the United States Hockey League (USHL).[8] Farabee was voted captain of the team in his sophomore year by coach Seth Appert as a result of his “competitive all-around game, belying his size”. New Hampshire[6] he changed his engagement to the Boston University of Hockey East in 2015.[9]

Farabee played one season with the Boston University Terriers men’s hockey team, scoring 36 points in 37 games. Praising his time with the Terriers, he said: “I think my down-low game below the goal line has gotten a lot better than it was a year ago… In terms of protecting the puck and holding on to it and not playing too fast, where I turn it This is the most important thing at the highest level. That’s why college hockey has been so good for me on points among freshmen while leading the Terriers in goals, points, power play goals, shorthanded goals, game-winning goals, plus-minus, and shots. In recognition of his efforts, Farabee received the Tim Taylor Award for College Hockey Rookie of the Year,[11] Hockey East Rookie of the Year[12] and was selected to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team.[13]

Prior to the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, Farabee was ranked 12th among all North American skaters by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau.[14] He was listed as 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m) and measured at 4 percent body fat during the NHL Scouting Combine. However, because Farabee demonstrated his offensive skills as a team captain in the development program and at Boston University, he was drafted 14th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft on June 23, 2018.[15] Farabee later said he hoped to get drafted by Philadelphia because he was a fan of the Flyers growing up.

Professional [edit]

Farabee signed an entry-level contract with the Philadelphia Flyers on March 25, 2019 after his freshman season at Boston University. After suffering a healthy scratch during the Flyers’ season opener in Prague, he was transferred to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, to start the season. He played four games with the Phantoms, scoring three goals and one assist before being called back to the NHL for his debut. Reflecting on his early days in the pro league, Farabee said it helped him gain more confidence and become comfortable with his racquet handling. As a result of his play, Farabee was honored as PSECU Player of the Week.

After making his NHL debut with the Flyers on October 21, 2019 against the Vegas Golden Knights, Farabee became the first Flyers player in franchise history to be born in the 2000s.[21] Four days later, Farabee scored his first career NHL goal and assisted against the Chicago Blackhawks, but both were knocked down because teammate Kevin Hayes was flagged for offside.[22] Later that game, he officially earned his first NHL point as an assist for Hayes’ third-period goal. However, it wasn’t until the following month that Farabee scored his first official goal in a 4–3 penalty shootout win over the New Jersey Devils. After a rebound from Michael Raffl, Farabee said he “closed his eyes” before putting the puck in the net.[24] Farabee remained with the Flyers before being suspended for three games for interference on December 15 during a contest against the Winnipeg Jets.

After playing in 37 games with the Flyers and recording three goals and nine assists, Farabee was loaned to the Phantoms on January 15, 2020. He was regularly called back to replace injured players, including James van Riemsdyk, in the second half of the season. By the end of the shortened 2019–20 regular season, Farabee had 21 points in 52 games. During the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs, he scored his first goal in a round robin against the Tampa Bay Lightning, becoming the first NHL player born in the 2000s to score a postseason goal.[28] When the Flyers struck the Lightning, he scored the game-winning goal against the Montreal Canadiens in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference first round playoffs. After playing well with Jakub Voráček (issue unknown) after jumping to the front row in the round-robin finals, Farabee stuck with Claude Giroux and Sean Couturier in Game 1. He stayed with the team throughout their playoff berth when they lost to the New York Islanders in the second round of the Eastern Conference. During the series, Farabee suffered a blow to the head and neck from Adam Pelech in Game 5 and had to sit out the remaining two games to recover.

Farabee returned to Flyers training camp for the 2020-21 season after gaining nine pounds and saying he feels “a lot more confident”. Franchise record for most points in a season opener by scoring four points in a 6–3 win. Later that month, Farabee scored his first NHL hat-trick in a 4-3 overtime win over the Islanders, becoming the second-youngest Flyers player to accomplish the feat during the regular season. He finished the season with 20 goals and 18 assists for a career-high 38 points.[1] As such, Farabee was awarded the Pelle Lindbergh Memorial Trophy, given to the most improved flyer as voted for by his teammates.

After his best season of his career, Farabee signed a six-year, $30 million contract extension with the Flyers on September 2, 2021.[38] With the offseason acquisition of Cam Atkinson, Farabee began the season on a high-scoring line alongside himself and Derick Brassard.[39] However, after enduring a mindless drought for eight games, Farabee was put on a line with Scott Laughton for a game against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Playstyle [ edit ]

Farabee says he modeled his playing style on Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jake Guentzel.[41] The comparisons focused on their skating skills, playmaking and hockey IQ.[10] He also drew comparisons to Brad Marchand and Zach Parise because of his “high motor skills and lots of intensity.”[16] During Flyers training camp in 2019, teammate Jakub Voráček called him a “smart player” who was hard to catch up.[42]

International game[edit]

Farabee has represented the United States in various international competitions at junior level. He represented the United States for the first time internationally at the 2017 IIHF World U18 Championships in Slovakia. He played in seven games and recorded six points while the team won a gold medal. The following year, Farabee competed at the 2018 IIHF World Under-18 Championships,[44] where he recorded four goals and four assists for eight points in seven games to lead the team to a silver medal.[43]

Farabee was named to the 2019 World Junior Hockey Championships team for the US men’s junior national ice hockey team. During a game against Kazakhstan on December 28, 2018, Farabee scored a natural hat-trick in the first half to lead the United States to an 8-2 win. He finished the tournament with five points in seven games as the United States won another silver medal.
