Clark-Sheard was born on November 15, 1960 in Detroit, Michigan, the youngest child of Reverend Elbert Clark and Dr. Mattie Moss Clark, a gospel choir director, was born Karen Valencia Clark. The youngest of six children, Clark-Sheard’s siblings are Leo, Jacky, Denise, Elbernita “Twinkie” and Dorinda. Clark-Sheard began singing gospel with her sisters at age 5, which became known as the Clark Sisters. For high school, Clark-Sheard attended Mumford High School in Detroit, Michigan, graduating in 1979.

Clark-Sheard’s involvement in the Island Inspirational All Stars’ “Don’t Give Up” in 1996 (along with Donald Lawrence, Hezekiah Walker and Kirk Franklin) led to her signing to Island Records. Clark-Sheard’s solo career began with the release of her debut album, Finally Karen, in 1997. The half-studio, half-live recording was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album and Clark-Sheard won the Lady of Soul Award for Best Gospel Album[6] that same year and peaked at #28 and #2 in the U.S. Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums or U.S. Billboard Gospel Albums Chart.

After Yolanda Adams, Clark-Sheard was the second gospel artist to sign to Elektra Records. In 2005, after a multi-label bidding war, Clark-Sheard signed to Word Records and released It’s Not Over (originally titled “Finally Karen Returns”), the follow-up to her 1997 debut album, “Finally Karen,” which was released on November 15, 2005. Should be released November 2005. Clark-Sheard’s 45th birthday but was postponed and released the following year. Most of It’s Not Over was recorded at Karen’s home church in Detroit, Michigan in 2005, while the last three tracks were recorded in the studio.

It was Clark-Sheard’s first solo album without guest vocals from her daughter (Kierra Sheard) and the first to be produced by Israel Houghton – who handled most of the project. It peaked at #124 on the US Billboard 200 and #4 on the US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.[8][9] As a songwriter, Clark-Sheard won the Grammy Award for Best Gospel Song on February 10, 2008 for “Blessed & Highly Favored” sung by the Clark Sisters.

As of 2019, Clark-Sheard is in talks to play Kitty Parham, a member of the Famous Ward Singers in Aretha Franklin’s upcoming biopic Respect.[10]

Clark-Sheard married Bishop J. Drew Sheard, a Detroit-based minister, on June 16, 1984. Clark-Sheard serves as First Lady of the Greater Emmanuel Institutional Church of God in Christ in Detroit, where her husband is the senior pastor. In March 2021, Bishop Sheard was elected Presiding Bishop of the COGIC denomination, making her First Lady of the COGIC denomination as well. Together they have two children: Kierra “Kiki” Sheard-Kelly (1987) and John Drew “J. Drew” Sheard II (1989). Another pregnancy ended in stillbirth.[12] Kiki is also a gospel artist with four albums and various projects. J. Drew is a musician and producer who often plays drums for the Clark Sisters.

John Drew Sheard (born January 1, 1959)[1] is an American pastor and minister from Detroit, Michigan who is currently the chairman of the Church of God in Christ, a 6 million-member, predominantly African-American Holiness Pentecostal congregation that has since grown grown into one of the largest African American Pentecostal churches in the United States.[2][3] He was elected Chairman of the Denomination on March 20, 2021 in the first-ever all-virtual online denomination election held virtually online due to the COVID-19 pandemic[4]. He is the first Presiding Bishop of the Church of God in Christ of the state of Michigan and pastor of the Greater Emmanuel Institutional Church of God in Christ, one of the denomination’s largest churches in Michigan.[5] He has also previously served on the General Board, the twelve bishops who make up the national board of the COGIC denomination, and as President of the COGIC International Youth Department, the service department of the COGIC denomination focused on youth and young adults from 1997 through 2001 and International President and Chair of the COGIC Auxiliaries In Ministry (AIM) Convention from 2004 to 2012.[1]

Biography[edit]

J. Drew Sheard was born on January 1, 1959 to John Henry Sheard and Willie Mae Sheard in Detroit, Michigan.[1] He was raised Pentecostal in the Church of God in Christ with his younger brother Ethan Blake Sheard, who is also a pastor in the COGIC denomination.[6] After high school, he attended Wayne State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education and a Masters of Education degree in mathematics, and while balancing a career in Christian ministry as a minister, he also served as a high school math teacher in the Detroit Public Schools District .[4][7]

In 1984 he married Karen Clark Sheard, a gospel singer and member of the famous gospel singing group The Clark Sisters, who is also the daughter of famous gospel choir director Mattie Moss Clark, who served as one of the international music department presidents of the COGIC denomination. For several years he helped Mattie Moss Clark manage the singing career of the Clark Sisters in the 1980s until they parted ways to pursue their own individual careers and became his wife Karen’s personal music career manager from then on.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Bishop Sheard served in various capacities with the COGIC denomination under the direction of his father, Bishop John H. Sheard, including serving as choir director, chairman of both local and state youth departments in the COGIC denomination, National Adjutant Overseer, and finally as Executive Secretary of the International Youth Department for the COGIC denomination. He also served in various civic capacities, including executive director of the Michigan chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and a board member of the Michigan Anti-Apartheid Council.[1]

In 1988 he became senior pastor of the Greater Emmanuel Institutional COGIC in Detroit, Michigan,[1] which began as a very small all-African American church in Detroit. During the 1990s and 2000s the church grew into one of the largest and fastest growing COGIC churches in the state of Michigan, and while still predominantly African American, the church has also grown into a very widespread multi-ethnic Pentecostal church in the recent years.[5][7]

In 2008, Sheard received an honorary doctorate in theology, and in 2007 he was inducted into the Martin Luther King Jr. Board of Preachers at Morehouse College. In 2009, Sheard and his wife Karen founded Karew Records, a Detroit-based Christian music record label focused on various forms of gospel and inspirational music.

In 1996 he was appointed International President of the Youth Department by the late Presiding Bishop Chandler David Owens, serving from 1996 to 2000. In 2001 he was appointed Vice-Chairman of the Youth Department by the late Presiding Bishop Gilbert Earl Patterson Auxiliaries in the Department of Ministry (AIM). He served until 2004. In 2004 he was replaced by the late Chairman Bishop G.E. appointed chairman of the AIM. Patterson. He served until 2012, when he was succeeded by Bishop Linwood Dillard of Memphis, Tennessee. In 2009 he was ratified and approved by the COGIC General Assembly to become the Bishop in Charge of the Diocese of Michigan North Central Jurisdiction of the Church of God in Christ. In 2012 he was elected to the General Council, the twelve bishops who serve as the Church’s governing body, where he served two four-year terms in 2012-2016 and 2016-2020, respectively.

The planned 2020 denomination election was canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and rescheduled as an online-only virtual election for March 2021 and on March 20, 2021, subsequently after re-election to the board of directors the church had had a runoff between him and Bishop Jerry W. Macklin of Hayward, California, for the office of presiding bishop. He defeated Bishop Macklin in the runoff and was named presiding bishop of the Church of God in Christ worldwide. He then made Bishop Macklin his first assistant presiding bishop and Bishop Lawrence M. Wooten of St. Louis, Missouri his second assistant presiding bishop.[4][10]

Sheard is married to Karen Clark-Sheard, a famous Grammy Award-winning gospel singer and a member of the gospel singing group The Clark Sisters. Together they have two children: Kierra “Kiki” Sheard-Kelly (born 1987) and John Drew “J. Drew” Sheard, II (Jr.) (born 1989) and two grandchildren.[14] Another pregnancy ended in stillbirth [citation needed]. Kierra Sheard is also a gospel artist with four albums and various projects. J. Drew, II is a musician and producer who often plays drums for the Clark Sisters and other gospel singers and groups. In 2001, his wife, Karen Clark-Sheard, found himself in a life-threatening crisis when a blood vessel ruptured during a scheduled bariatric surgery. Her doctors only gave her a 2% chance of survival due to her complications. After the blood clot was surgically removed, Clark-Sheard fell into a coma. The coma lasted three and a half weeks, but according to Clark-Sheard, she miraculously recovered, which Bishop Sheard attributed to prayer and “God’s grace and healing power.”[15]

His father, John Henry Sheard, was Chairman of the Council of Bishops of the COGIC denomination until his death. The Council of Bishops is the overarching body composed of all the bishops of the denomination. His mother and father both contracted the COVID-19 virus and disease in 2020, and his mother, Willie Mae Sheard, died from it in April 2020. His father survived his battle with the virus and recovered a few months later. His father later died on November 11, 2021, when Bishop Sheard took to Instagram to confirm his death from an infection he had contracted in his body a few months earlier.[16] His brother Ethan Blake Sheard is also a COGIC pastor. He was also the son-in-law of Mattie Moss Clark, who was one of the international presidents of the COGIC music department and served as principal conductor of the international COGIC C.H. Mason Memorial Choir, the gospel choir that serves the COGIC denomination’s music ministry at its international conventions and conferences.
