José Díaz-Balart Caballero (born November 7, 1960) is a Cuban-American journalist and television host.[2] On September 7, 2021, Diaz-Balart resigned as presenter of the weekly editions of Noticias Telemundo. He is currently anchoring a new 10am. Show called “José Díaz-Balart Reports” on MSNBC. He also continues to host NBC Nightly News on Saturdays, frequently replacing the weekday and Sunday programs and will continue to host breaking news and special event coverage for Telemundo and host monthly specials.

Early life[edit]

Diaz-Balart’s family left Cuba in 1959 and he grew up in Madrid, Spain.[3] He is the son of Rafael Díaz-Balart y Gutiérrez (a former Cuban politician) and Hilda Caballero Brunet. He has three brothers: Rafael Díaz-Balart (a banker), Mario Díaz-Balart (a US representative), and Lincoln Díaz-Balart (a former US representative). His uncle Waldo Diaz-Balart is an internationally recognized painter. His aunt Mirta Diaz-Balart was Fidel Castro’s first wife and thus Fidel Castro is his uncle by marriage, and the late Fidel Castro Jr. (Fidelito) was his first cousin.[4]

Career [edit]

After a brief stint in radio, he worked in print journalism,[5] for United Press International, in the mid-1980s.[6] In December 1984 he became head of the Central American office for what was then the Spanish International Network (now known as Univision). In 1987 he was part of the group of journalists that founded Telemundo News and founded Noticias Telemundo/HBC. He then established himself as a television news reporter in Miami, where he worked for WTVJ from 1988 until he was hired by CBS in May 1996.[7] In August 1996, he made history by becoming the first Cuban American to host a news program when he began hosting for the CBS news program This Morning.[2] By 2000 he returned to the Spanish-language television network; he became the presenter of a new Telemundo morning show called Esta Manana.[8] He later co-hosted Telemundo’s first morning news and entertainment show, Esta Mañana, and the public affairs show, Cada Día. [citation needed] By 2002, the bilingual presenter began hosting a monthly interview program on Telemundo. Enfoque with José Diaz-Balart; On that program, he has interviewed a variety of newsmakers, including political leaders and presidential candidates. He has interviewed every US President since Ronald Reagan.[9] In 2003, he returned to English-language television and his former Miami station, WTVJ, as a news anchor.[10] In 2009 he became the presenter of Telemundo’s evening news program Noticias Telemundo.[11]

By 2010 he was doing some reports for NBC. He made history again when he replaced Contessa Brewer on MSNBC Live on the week of June 20–24, 2011 in the show’s 12 p.m. time slot, becoming the first US journalist to simultaneously cover English and Spanish newscasts on two networks sent. [12]

From 2014 to 2016, Diaz-Balart hosted the 10 am news hour for MSNBC, replacing Chris Jansing. On November 10, 2014, it was announced that he would take over hosting duties at The Daily Rundown on November 17, 2014, expanding the program to two hours and essentially absorbing his eponymous show, which previously aired in the second hour had been. The Daily Rundown later became known as MSNBC Live with Jose Diaz-Balart as part of a broader restructuring of MSNBC’s daytime programming in 2015.[14] In late 2015, he also began filling out the Saturday edition of NBC Nightly News. He was formally appointed host of this program in July 2016 and remains in that position to this day.[15]

On February 18, 2016, Diaz-Balart hosted the Democratic City Hall in Las Vegas, Nevada with Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.[16] On June 26-27, 2019, Diaz-Balart co-hosted the first Democratic presidential debates on NBC and Telemundo.[17]

On September 7, 2021, it was announced that he would be stepping down as the weekly editions host of Noticias Telemundo to host a new 10am edition. Show called José Díaz-Balart Reports on MSNBC. He will continue to host NBC Nightly News on Saturdays and will continue to host breaking news and special event coverage for Telemundo and host monthly specials.[18]

Diaz-Balart has received four national Emmys for his work with Telemundo Network, including 2020-2021 Outstanding Newscast Anchor. He previously received two SunCoast Emmy Awards while working at WTVJ-TV in Miami; an Associated Press Award and four Hispanic Excellence in Journalism Awards, all in the 1980s.[2] He also received a Du Pont and Peabody. Media 100 has named him Best News Anchor three times, and Hispanic Business Magazine named him one of the “100 Most Influential People in America.” In 2010 he received the Silver Circle Award from the National Academy of Television Sciences. In 2012, Multichannel News and Broadcasting & Cable presented him with the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Hispanic Television Group at the 10th Annual Hispanic Television Summit, produced by Schramm Marketing. He was named Best International Journalist in 2017 by GQ Magazine. [19]
