An American moved to Burkina Faso for ‘a better life.’ He was shot dead outside a military base.

DAKAR, Senegal — It was almost noon in the Burkina Faso capital when the man in black entered an army base, armed only with a backpack. Guards yelled: Freeze! The West African nation was mired in a four-year conflict with Islamist extremists who targeted military camps and were known for unleashing suicide bombings.
But the man kept moving. Witnesses later described his behavior as “erratic”. Soldiers fired two shots, hitting him in the arm and thigh, the Burkinabe military said. What they found in his pocket made the unusual event even stranger: a US passport.
The man – an American, US officials confirmed – died hours later at a nearby hospital in late November, becoming the subject of worldwide intrigue online. According to the military report, he was apparently not carrying a weapon. He was in the country less than three months.

“What have you been doing here bro?” asked JT the Bigga Figga, an American rapper and YouTube vlogger living in Burkina Faso. “What could you possibly have been doing here?”
Tourism in the country of 20 million virtually evaporated after fighters loyal to al Qaeda and Islamic State began raiding rural villages and attacking hotels that catered to Westerners.
The State Department advises Americans to avoid Burkina Faso over “COVID-19, terrorism, crime and kidnapping.” Expatriates in the country usually work for charities or private security companies. But the man who entered Baba Sy barracks on November 21 appeared to have come alone, raising suspicions that he was trying to join an extremist group.
Now his family wants to tell their side of the story.
His name was Jerry Lamont Cole. He was 41, struggling with schizophrenia and looking for a fresh start.

“He wanted to build a better life for himself,” said Jeremy Cole, his younger brother in Texas. “He wasn’t just an ‘unpredictable’ person.”
He doesn’t speak French, his brother said, which may help explain the tragedy. Maybe he was confused.
According to the military report, soldiers regarded Cole as a “suspect”. They fired warning shots, the report said, and he tried to run away.
Police had arrested Cole the day before for entering another government property, a US official said. Local authorities released him with a warning after determining he posed no threat, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
The State Department declined to provide details of Cole’s arrest and death. “When a US citizen is detained abroad, the State Department works to provide all appropriate consular assistance, as was the case in this case,” a spokeswoman said on condition of anonymity, according to the department’s logs. The US Africa Command declined to comment on the details of Cole’s case.

Cole approached the barracks at a particularly tense moment — on the eve of Burkina Faso’s presidential election. Extremists had threatened to cut off the fingers of anyone who tried to vote. Earlier in the month they killed 13 soldiers in a northern province.
The conflict has steadily escalated since fighters poured across the border from Mali in 2016. At least 425 Burkinabes have died in attacks this year, according to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project, which records casualties.
Cole never mentioned extremism before moving to Burkina Faso in September, said his brother, the family spokesman.
He was a gentle man who followed a strict vegan diet, he said. Only raw vegetables. He had pet turtles named after the Ninja Turtles. He practiced meditation. He spoke about the alignment of his chakras.

Signs of mental illness emerged in his early 20s. He jumped from a normally rational mindset into outright paranoia, making it difficult for him to keep a job.
Over the years, Cole amassed a list of criminal charges — possession of marijuana, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest — and sought help for his mental health. He was living on Social Security payments in Washington, D.C. after being diagnosed with schizophrenia, his brother said, and had recently received thousands of dollars in back payments.
That summer, Cole could hardly bear to live in the United States.
The racism that has long bothered him, a black man, was seen all over TV after George Floyd’s death sparked protests around the world, Jeremy Cole said.
“With the state of politics, he thought the world was going to be a safer place for people who look like us,” he said. “He wanted to be somewhere where he could feel safe again.”

Meanwhile, his paranoia was getting worse. Someone bugged his apartment, he told his family. He wanted to leave the country as soon as possible.
Cole had expressed his curiosity about Africa before discovering the YouTube channel of JT the Bigga Figga, the American rapper who moved to Burkina Faso last year.
The California-born artist, whose real name is Joseph Tom, praises the country as a creative haven for his 34,000 YouTube followers. He fell in love with Burkina Faso, he said after a local philanthropist invited him to visit.
He tells black Americans: There is no racism here.
Cole contacted him in July.
“He said he was trying to get out of America,” Tom said. “For America to start becoming a place it doesn’t want to be anymore. And that’s what 90 percent of people say, man — there’s too much violence in the community.”

The rapper sold him a small piece of land — future home included — for about $7,000, he said.
The video shows Cole excitedly talking about the project.
“It’s in the process of being built,” he says in one recording. “I just bought my land. This is the beginning. I’m glad to be with real brothers here, man. The real black community.”
However, Cole didn’t reveal much about himself. He appeared wary and spoke of “agents” following him, Tom said.
“He said: I’m a leader like you, you know what I mean?” he said. “For example, I can make it here without you. I don’t want you to feel like you’re taking care of me.”
Tom saw him as odd but stable until he was arrested for trespassing. Cole called him from custody, he said.
“They interviewed him and they said, ‘Okay, he didn’t do anything. He just didn’t know where the hell he was supposed to be,'” said Tom. “So they let him go, right? Then the next day he went somewhere else and was killed there.”
advertisement
Tom vented on his YouTube channel: “What have you been doing here bro?”
Then he heard about Cole’s family, he said, and it started to make sense.
“It was clearly his disorder that made him do what he did,” the rapper said.
Construction on Cole’s house in Ouagadougou never started, so Tom sent his money to the family’s GoFundMe.
They use it to take him home.
Wilkins reported from London.

JT the Bigga Figga
American rapper from California
musical artist
Joseph Tom, better known by his stage name JT the Bigga Figga (also known as Figg Panamera), is an American rapper, record producer, film producer and record manager from the Fillmore neighborhood of San Francisco, California.[1] He has produced music on over a hundred albums for artists such as Daz Dillinger, Master P, The Game, San Quinn and Messy Marv.[2]
Music career[edit]
In 1991, JT founded the independent record label Get Low Recordz.[1][3] What began as a basement business and one-man operation later became one of the most successful independent labels in the country.[4]
JT’s rap debut came in 1992 with the self-released album Don’t Stop til We Major at the age of 18. The next year he was followed by Playaz N the Game.[4] The album’s first single, “Game Recognize Game,” received substantial airplay and thrust JT into the spotlight. The success of his album led to a bidding war between record labels and he eventually signed to Priority Records in 1995. However, subsequent albums released through Priority Records were unsuccessful, and in 1996 the label decided to release JT from his contract.
After his contract with Priority Records ended, JT went back to self-distributing his albums through Get Low Recordz. Using the money from his deal with Priority, JT invested in a new state-of-the-art recording studio and quickly began producing and releasing numerous albums. In 2000, after signing a modest distribution deal with Bayside Records, Get Low began to expand, releasing nearly 20 albums a year.
In 2002, JT published an e-book called The CEO Manual.[6]
JT is credited with discovering rapper The Game and releasing his first two albums Untold Story and QB 2 Compton before The Game joined Dr. Dre signed and debuted as a member of Aftermath Entertainment Camp.[7]
In the fall of 2005, JT was named A&R for Houston, Texas-based Rap-A-Lot Records’ West Coast operations.[8]
JT the Bigga Figga’s films include the Spike Lee film Sucker Free City (2004)[9][10] and SKUZZ TV (2007),[11] a reality-based documentary DVD released by 3MZ Productions.
In 2006, JT collaborated with Snoop Dogg on a documentary DVD called Mandatory Business, which featured the likes of Russell Simmons, Spike Lee, Xzibit, Young Buck and 50 Cent.[12]
Starting in 2015, JT founded the Netflix-like on-demand service Trapflix, showcasing urban films, documentaries, concert footage and music. JT has been heavily involved in films and directing and has released over 40 films and documentaries since 2000. JT now spreads his independent knowledge and concept of Pan-Africanism in Burkina Faso and posts daily on his Trapflix TV YouTube channel. He founded the label “Fillmoelanta”. He is also one of the most recognized marketing/promotional talents in hip hop and has served many high profile clients such as Rich Gang, G-Unit, Snoop Dogg and many more. He has also released a number of collaboration tapes with Gucci Mane.
