Karyn Blanco The Circle Star Speaks Her Mind & Smashes Stereotypes
This is the third in a 5-part series introducing the panelists from GO’s LGBTQ+ Representations in Film and TV Virtual Pride Event.
Karyn Blanco will not lie. “When I first saw an ad for The Circle, I wasn’t interested,” she tells me, referring to the hit Netflix reality show that made Blanco a household name. “I was confused.”
That’s understandable, considering “The Circle” is confusing. In written form, the concept of The Circle is difficult to pin down in detail: a group of strangers are segregated in an apartment building, where they only interact via social media and have the power to send each other home.
The ad for The Circle, which a friend saw on Instagram and suggested she check out, stuck in the back of Blanco’s mind despite her initial confusion. Already a singer by the nickname Silent Celeb, Blanco “started 2019 by saying I wanted to get back into acting more, so I’d take it as a sign.” She decided to audition.
First impressions can be just as deceiving as appearances and so Blanco’s second guess proved to be good. Not only was she cast in The Circle, but she became one of the most lovable characters playing Mercedeze, a female version of herself portrayed by another woman’s avatar – essentially a catfish. The crowd at home saw the real Blanco presenting himself as aggressive; Your competitors saw a photo of the feminine Mercedes.
“[The show] was actually one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” she told me over the phone in early July, just weeks after appearing as a panelist on GO’s virtual LGBTQ+ Representations in Film and TV. Playing a catfish gave Blanco an opportunity to illustrate how we live in a world where we judge others by preconceived standards based solely on looks. It also gave her an opportunity to show how wrong such judgments can be.
Blanco built her career by defying those expectations, starting with her music. “Music has always been a part of me,” she says, although “it wasn’t until I was 18 that I started taking it seriously and getting more involved with writing my own songs, networking with producers, and making my money.” to save. ” She and a friend had already become regulars at the club property, going there so often they were allowed to skip lines that stretched blocks; The treatment earned them the nickname “silent celebrities,” from which Blanco would take her performance name, “Silent Celeb” — aka “the person in the crowd that no one ever notices but [who] has the greatest appeal” .
As she began making her own music, her familiarity with the clubs — and the producers who frequented them — led to greater performing opportunities. But success, Blanco says, was hampered by the expectation that women who sang a certain way should also look a certain way — mostly traditionally feminine. “I was always overlooked on certain occasions in music because nobody at the time could understand how aggressive or AG I was singing like Mary J. Blige,” she says. “So I was a contradiction of both.”
Ironically, this contradiction also brought new opportunities and has held up well with her “silent celebrity” brand. “It got me more exposure, and people wanted to know who I was.” She started landing more jobs, hosting club events, and even airing her song “Girl from Ipanema” on the web series New York Girls TV. appear. She soon released her debut album, The Silent Celebrity Project, a hip-hop/R&B fusion based on the artist’s crystal clear soprano voice with a Mary J. Blige touch.
However, when Blanco was cast on The Circle and asked if she wanted to play herself or a catfish, her choice was obvious: she would play a catfish, but with a twist. “Personally, I made it very clear that although I played catfish for the spatial, direct part [of the show], all of the phrasing, all of the personalities, all of the emotions — all of it is personally me. That was my reason for playing a catfish,” she says. “I feel like people think that because I’m a dominant woman — an aggressive woman — I should have this machismo or facade of wanting to be a man. I’ve encountered this so often that it’s become annoying.”
Her decision to play a catfish and her suspicions of poor judgment were “solidified and justified” when an eliminated castmate, Antonio, decided to visit Mercedeze before his departure from the show and eventually met the woman behind the avatar. He confessed that if he had seen her as Karyn and not Mercedeze, he would have blocked — or eliminated — her from the house. “I don’t know if anyone really knows how important that was, but for me it was absolutely important because it proved that you judge a book by its cover every day,” she says. “In that moment, it was a ‘bingo’ moment. That’s what I needed.”
But the show didn’t just confirm what it already knew about performing. Also, “it gave me a platform that I personally wouldn’t have had so quickly without The Circle,” she says. This platform has allowed her to further open up and challenge prejudices that she and other LGBTQ+ people face. Sure, her celebrity has landed her spots in O Magazine and on Times Square billboards, but more important to Blanco is the chance to speak to and for others like her, who are constrained by societal expectations. As soon as the show aired, these people started reaching out to them.
“I get so many DMs from people telling me I started a conversation at their house that they had to have that it was overwhelming for me for the first month of the show,” she tells GO. “I’ve really been a crybaby every day because there are so many people I’ve spoken to who have been through what I’ve been through.”
Although Blanco knew she was gay by the age of 12, “she was never sure how to put it, but I knew I would be different and I knew my family wouldn’t approve of it. Raised by her grandmother in a conservative Honduran family, Blanco was forcibly outed in her early teens when a neighbor saw her kissing her friend. The revelation left her estranged from family and “quite alone” until she was 17 and moved in with her more accepting mother.
She’s reconnected with her family—”Thank God they’ve all just realized I’m pretty strong-willed!”—and she says her family have come to understand and respect her. But she knows that while they accept her, “they still don’t accept the community. And this is a big problem for me, which I’m still trying to solve in general.
“I think it’s difficult when people are against my community when they support me because it’s like you have to choose one way or the other, it’s a fight you can’t win; you will love me for who I am and what I represent,” says Blanco. “I shouldn’t get a passport because you think I’m extra cool, but I also happen to be gay.”
In addition to her music and appearance on The Circle, both of which she uses to bring LGBTQ+ voices and people to a wider audience, Blanco also hosts a podcast called Friends and Other Drugs with her friend Erica, which addresses issues relevant to the community, such as trans rights, coming out and the importance of knowing one’s status.
However, she is most proud of her performance on The Circle, as it brought her into the homes of people all over the world; Because of her openness, people now feel comfortable sharing their stories with her. “It’s always a humbling moment for me and a moment of thanksgiving to God when I get a message and I have to translate it on Google because I just know I’ve reached a different country now – I’ve come to a different home and I’m going to have a conversation at someone else’s house now,” she says. “That’s really my goal: to make this a normal thing, not something that’s so taboo, but such a big problem. That will always be the most important thing to me.”
How she would like people to see her, apart from the first impression they have: “I’m a woman. It doesn’t matter if I have the same haircut as your husband, it doesn’t matter if I wear the same perfume as your father, it doesn’t matter if I wear the same clothes as your brother. I should be respected, treated and honored as one. My build and demeanor doesn’t mean I want to be a man; it just means I feel comfortable in my clothes.”
“And until people can understand and respect that,” she says, “we will never be fully free.”
