Tokyo’s British middle-distance heroes Laura Muir and Keely Hodgkinson put their winter injuries behind as they returned to home soil and began their potentially game-changing outdoor campaigns with encouraging victories in the Birmingham Diamond League on Saturday.
Hodgkinson and Muir won Olympic silver in the 800m and 1500m respectively last summer and both made headlines of the outdoor season in the 100m at the first major track and field event at the newly remodeled Alexander Stadium, where Dina Asher-Smith also claimed her first victory.
The venue will host this year’s Commonwealth Games, sandwiched between World and European Championships in what has been a massive summer for British athletes, and while tougher tests lie ahead – namely trying to close the gap on their Olympic victories Athing Mu and Faith Kipyegon – ahead For Hodgkinson in particular, this was a statement success.
The 20-year-old broke the UK indoor record in Birmingham in February before a quadriceps injury forced her to withdraw from the World Indoor Championships, where she would have been favorite to win gold.
On an afternoon when fast times were otherwise elusive, the British record holder proved her form with the fastest start to the season of her short career as she tumbled ahead of France’s Renelle Lamote and Jamaica’s Natoya Goule to win by almost a second in 1st place :58.63, the fourth fastest run in the world so far this year.

“It’s the worst injury I’ve ever had. I don’t think I’ve had that long a break since I started running when I was 11 or 12,” said Muir, who ran well ahead of the field with Jessica Hull in the pursuit before breaking away from the Australian and on 4th place won :02.81.
“I didn’t even think I would run here today so I’m very happy not just to run but to be competitive and to win.”
Both the Scot, who has claimed she is “90 to 95 per cent” fit, and Hodgkinson will now travel to the United States for next weekend’s star-studded Prefontaine Classic at Hayward Field, where they will face rematches with Kipyegon and Mu will be disputed.
The historic Oregon track, which like Alexander Stadium has recently undergone a major makeover, will host the World Championships later this year, where Muir will be chasing a second global outdoor medal after breaking her duck in Tokyo.
“At the beginning of the injury I was a bit unsure about what I was going to do this summer, but now I know I still want to play all three [championships] and win a medal in all three,” she added.
Asher-Smith, meanwhile, had seen her own individual medal hopes dashed by a hamstring injury in Tokyo but insists those troubles are behind her and delighted a normally rowdy home crowd with her success.
The Blackheath-Bromley athlete had already returned to the season in Doha last week in the 200m, where she finished third behind Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson and USA’s Gabby Thomas, but the 26-year-old turned around with both and took the win a narrow win 11.11, beating Jackson by a hundredth of a second, with British teammate Daryl Neita third in 11.14. Asher-Smith and Neita returned to team up with Beth Dobbin and Imani-Lara Lansiquot in the final event of the meeting as Great Britain won the women’s 4x100m relay.
There was a fifth British success in the afternoon as local hero Matthew Hudson-Smith won the men’s 400m after returning to form this season with his best performances since 2018.
“That’s everything for me this year,” he said. “It’s my hometown, my club, a new stadium and a home champion, so I really want it to be my year. Everything fits together, so I’m really happy.
“I’ve had to change and I’m with a new coach and I’m training in a new environment in the US and I’m training with the Olympic and Commonwealth champion [Steven Gardiner].
“I always thought I could come back, but it’s great to actually prove it.”
Josh Kerr, the third of the British middle distance medalists from Tokyo to win the 1500m bronze, was also in action in a rare British appearance for the New Mexico-based athlete but could only finish fifth as Kenya’s Abel Kipsang continued to improve on his fine form start of the season, which reinforced last week’s win in Doha with a second straight win, while Olympic bronze medalist Holly Bradshaw of the women’s pole vault competition fell after three misses at her starting height of 4.45m without a clearance to achieve.

Five years ago, Gabriela DeBues-Stafford was a wide-eyed student at the University of Toronto who found herself in her first elite race. This race happened to be the 1500 meter race in Canada’s national championships with an Olympics spot on the line.

In the end, she pulled away to her first national championship and berth for the 2016 Summer Olympics. However, in the run-up to the Summer Olympics in Rio, she hit the rookie wall and finished ninth in her first round.
“After that high point at the Olympic Games, I just fell completely,” she lamented in the same interview. “I was just burned out. Previous workouts where I could just be great and smooth was just a struggle and I went to the Olympics a bit burned out.”
Experience showed how far she had to go, but also how good she could be. Since Rio, Debues-Stafford has built her own division in the Canadian record books with six national marks, multiple national championships and is the first Canadian to break the sub-4-minute barrier at 1,500 meters in a blazing final at the 2019 World Championships Athletics.
In 2021, two early efforts as a new member of the Oregon-based Bowerman Track Club have cemented her as a medal contender for Tokyo.

In 2018, she completed a bold move from her college days. She married her husband, Rowan, whom she met when he helped her move into her college dorm as a freshman. This coincided with moving from Canada to Scotland to work with well-known trainer Andy Young and training daily with one of the best middle-distance runners in the world, 2018 European 1500m champion Laura Muir.
Daily competition and greater elite experience led to a breakthrough in the race for the Canadian. In the 2019 women’s 1,500m final at the World Championships in Doha, Qatar, DeBues-Stafford would compete in one of the fastest women’s 1,500m finals of all time.
“I really believed I had a chance of a medal, even with 200 meters to go,” she told Canadian Running after the race. “But once I was down the stretch, I knew I didn’t have it. The first three were too far away. But then I saw the clock and couldn’t believe how fast the race was.”
Her time was a stunning 3:56.12, beating her own Canadian record by three seconds. The performance earned a sixth-place finish in a run that saw the championship record, European record and three other national records broken, including Shelby Houlihan, who lowered the American record.
It was this effort that prompted her to return to North America in 2020 to join the Bowerman Track Club. As in Scotland, Debues-Stafford receives daily coaching from the best.
