MODEL HISTORY & PRODUCTION
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, often referred to as a G-Wagon, short for Geländewagen / terrain vehicle, is a mid-size four-wheel drive luxury SUV manufactured from 1979 to the present day.
As a suggestion by the Shah of Iran in 1972 (a significant Mercedes-Benz shareholder at the time) development as a military vehicle started as a cooperative agreement between Daimler-Benz and Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Graz, Austria. Subsequently, after extensive prototype testing in the German coalfields, Sahara Desert, and Arctic Circle, the full civilian-version G-Wagon production commenced in 1979.
With its pressed steel bodywork bolted to a box frame chassis with enclosed side and cross-members, and durable beam axles, the first models had power outputs ranging between 72hp and 102hp and typical climbing ability of up to 80% and a tilt angle up to 54%
In 1980, the G-Wagon gained its global fame when the Vatican took delivery of a specially made variant based on a 230 G cabriolet. With a clear thermoplastic top, it served as the Popemobile when Pope John Paul II made his first visit to Germany.
The first major refinements were introduced in 1981 as the G-Wagon made the transition to a more luxury-lifestyle based vehicle with its genetic underpinnings of outstanding off-road performance. These initial improvements included automatic transmission, air conditioning, and more comfortable seats. Subsequently, a continual cycle of development and the introduction of a myriad of different models and configurations has seen the G-Wagon go from strength to strength and become an iconic luxury SUV.
Since 1979, over 300,000 units have been produced, and today the range-topping AMG G63 is available with a 4.0 litre V8 twin-turbocharged engine producing 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque.
THIS VEHICLE
Based around a usable original 1989 Mercedes Benz G Wagon 280GE, the owner sort the services of a marque specialist to fully restore with a complete body and chassis off restoration over a two year period, with every component seen or unseen restored with a number of upgrades and modifications.
This Short Wheelbase Station Wagon 460GE three door version was ideal as a donor vehicle, and perfect for a full body off restoration with enhancements and upgrades. The standard M110 petrol engine was considered too sluggish so it was upgraded to a 605 250 turbo diesel engine from a later Mercedes-Benz and mated to a 6 speed manual transmission and tall gear high ratio axle.
Key features of the restoration were:
– Full component & Chassis / Body Off Restoration.
– Chassis bead blasted & etch primed with Glasurit 2K paint.
– Bodyshell acid dipped & etch primed & painted Glasuirt 2K paint.
