Bubba the Love Sponge Clem (born Todd Alan Clem, April 23, 1966) is an American radio personality who hosts The Bubba the Love Sponge Show on radio station WWBA in Tampa, Florida, and the subscription service Bubba Army Radio. [1] He can also be heard on Florida Man Radio.

Early life [edit]

Todd Alan Clem was born on April 23, 1966 in Warsaw, Indiana. [2] His father was a factory worker and his mother, Jane Edmond, a schoolbus driver and Warsaw city department head; he has a sister, Tara. [3] [4] [5] Clem’s parents separated when he was young. [6] In 1984, Clem graduated from Warsaw Community High School. [4] He attended Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana, with plans to enter dentistry, but his best friend Larry Plummer told him he was better suited to a radio career, and he quit his second years. [7] [4] ] Clem held a position at campus radio station WISU, but before he became a full-time disc jockey, he worked in a van conversion shop, where he laid carpets. He also coached football at his former high school. [4]

Career [edit]

1986–1992: Early career [edit]

In 1986, Clem worked as a bouncer and driver at the Jubilation nightclub, where he took “Scary” radio DJ Kerry Gray, of which he was a fan, and brought him to the club. Arriving there, Clem noticed that people were moving towards Gray. [3] [8] Gray then gave Clem an on-air shift as the April Fool’s Day joke on April 1, 1986, on WPFR-FM in Terre Haute as Rockin ‘Bubba Clem, a name suggested by someone else. [3] [4] [ 9] Clem has been Gray’s intern, making studio visits, answering phone calls, and sitting on the show. He accepted a position hosting weekends, and began a part-time noon shift beginning on Christmas Day in 1986. Later, he became the station’s managing director. [8] At a fraternity party, Gray called Clem a “love sponge” after witnessing the female attention Clem received. [3] [10]

After WPFR, Clem had a stint on WGRD-FM in Grand Rapids, Michigan. [10] She was fired on December 21, 1988, after a 13-year-old girl called her show and Clem made sexual statements about her. [11] [12] In 1989, Clem secured a spot at KTFM in San Antonio, Texas, where he was encouraged to trademark his name on the air and borrowed $ 5,000 from his parents to file a federal trademark for “Bubba the Love Sponge “. [8] [3] He then worked on evenings on WBBM-FM in Chicago, followed by a stint at WIOQ in Philadelphia from March to June 1990. The station allowed him because management thought he was not looking for his style. [13] Clem took legal action, and received $ 75,000 from WIOQ. [14] [15]

Clem then worked nights at WXXL in Orlando, Florida, where he had an average of 53,000 regular listeners. [6] He left the station in May 1991. [16] In August 1991, he returned to Chicago on WYZT as the morning host, but the position lasted less than three months before management rebranded the station. [17] [13] [16] Clem moved to WLUM-FM in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. [18] [19] [20]

1992–1996: WFLZ-FM Tampa [edit]

In September 1992, Clem began work from 7 to 11 p.m. on WFLZ-FM in Tampa, Florida, where his show became popular, particularly with teenagers. [7] [4] [3] [21] His first major contract signed during this period was worth $ 100,000 a year. [3] Clem and WFLZ host Tom Steele were temporarily suspended to fix legal issues from their ongoing on -air fight. [22]
