At MWC 2021, we showed how Qualcomm is leading the 5G evolution with mmWave technology and highlight how our wireless 5G R&D programs are demonstrating advanced technologies across 5G fundamentals and industry verticals. We did this with a series of demos.
The first demo highlights our comprehensive approach to designing and optimizing 5G mmWave networks. Through a combination of machine learning and optimization techniques, we can greatly simplify the network planning process. Our machine learning algorithm takes readily available data as input and efficiently identifies the different physical elements that can impact a mmWave deployment. There are many tools and node options in the “deployment toolbox” (such as small cells, IABs, repeaters), and Qualcomm’s “digital twin” models can be configured to evaluate different network topology options to meet system requirements.
5G mmWave continues to evolve, bringing better performance and efficiency and expanding its reach to new device types and tiers. In the second demo, we look at a system simulation of a 5G mmWave network to visualize how this is done. We showed with the introduction of NR-Light (aka RedCap) devices in a mmWave network can efficiently extend mmWave connectivity to a large number of lower-complexity IoT devices while coexisting with eMBB devices without significantly impacting network resources.
The third and final demo walks us through a smart factory simulation to show how 5G mmWave supports diverse connectivity needs in new verticals. The technology can enhance mobile broadband for smartphones and always-connected laptops. It also meets the requirements for boundless extended reality and provides high-performance industrial automation, with the ability to scale down to support lower-complexity IoT devices.
